Living in Manchester U.K. 21 years and having extended family in Dunshaughlin Co Meath, I use SailRail via Holyhead & Dublin Port (North Wall) to get home - having grown up in Dunshaughlin and previously lived in Stoneybatter and worked in Blanchardstown, I’m astonished at how heavier the traffic in Dublin has become every time I come home every 6 months, both daytime and overnight, summer and winter over several years - being entirely reliant on public transport, I now have to plan my trips home to Ireland very carefully to avoid running into Dublin’s rush-hour traffic so that I can get out of Dublin more easily - I tried flying into Ireland once but it took the direct coach to Navan over an hour (outside of Dublin’s rush hour) to get to the perimeter roads of the Airport, let alone to the N2 or Rathoath - better links from the Irish Ferries/Stena terminals at North Wall into the City Centre are essential - and why are Bus Éireann not using the Port Tunnel M50 links to provide direct coaches from North Wall as they are doing with the Airport? - EU funding was wasted on motorways when this money could have extended the M3 Parkway line to Navan from Dublin Docklands

It’s still going to be missing a high capacity cross city link though; there’ll be ~18k passengers/hour going into Heuston/Heuston West, and the LUAS’ capacity is only 4k, and the Phoenix park tunnel will have a capacity of 6k. So you’ll have at least 8k people per hour (probably dramatically more because the LUAS is pretty full by Heuston) arriving at Heuston with nowhere to go. Build DART underground now!
@ado75

Just hope it gets built. Definitely will tie the existing infrastructure together. I think metro north is a waste of scarce resources though. All that is needed is a spur from the northern line near Howth junction to the airport. DART would then link the airport directly with the rail network at a fraction of the cost of the metro.

A total ban on all cars (including electric cars) within a 50 mile radius of Dublin is the only solution to make public transport more efficient and reliable - the Irish government needs to “take the bull by the horns” in this regard, but I suspect that it will come down to thier becoming compelled to do so by EU directives and laws and where they will have no other option, which will be the only way to force them to do what is needed by “fait accompli”

With the Irish governments plans under EU climate change laws to restrict or ban shorthaul flights between Ireland and the U.K. (aside from 15 mins cities) and aside from such things as HS2 or the high-speed rail tunnel between Holyhead and Dublin Port (North Wall) regardless of whether or not a line across the North of England is constructed to connect the ECML to the WCML, either a LUAS or DART underground link to both the Irish Ferries/Stena terminals and Dublin Docklands station is essential, despite the increased costs involved, if alternatives to air travel are to be made more viable and attractive options - this would also negate the need for private cars (including electric cars) and the existing motorway infrastructure could be used for long distance coach services out of Dublin - but the Irish government needs to “take the bull by the horns” and totally ban all private car ownership, insurance, licensing and use (including electric cars) within a 50 mile radius of Dublin, Cork, Limerick & Galway

There will never be a tunnel between Dublin and Holyhead. It's too deep & too long to be financially viable. Not just that, but it would also arrive at nowhere. On high speed lines it would still take 8 hours to go to London and lack significant capacity. This is before we discuss gauge problems

If you do extend the Dart line to Drogheda is a bad move, and a stop to far for the Dart. That will result in people live near a station passed Malahide, having slower jounery times. Which may cause these people to stop using the train, and drive to Dublin instead. Also the Dart trains leave Dublin City Centre packed, at least before Covid 19 hit. So you are trying to get more people onto Dart trains, that are already full.

The underground option is generally considered too expensive - they once had plans to connect Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria via the Arndale via underground shuttle trains but the plans were shelved in favour of the current Metrolink Trams - despite the Eurostar Channel Tunnel and aside from HS2 snd a dedicated line to connect the ECML to the WCML across the North of England and North Wales, the same “expense excuse” was used to shelve the high speed rail line under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin, as it was also considered too long a link - clearly, the “old guard” has to be got rid of before these projects can be made a reality

As far as I know, it's been shelved indefinitely and wasn't included in the ireland 2040 plan, however some planning decisions were made recently due to the project. On a site near Pearse Station, planning permission was rejected for a 7 storey office block as it was on the site of the planned passenger exit for the dart underground and there was also a bridge planned for the docklands which had to be moved further up the liffey (in the plans) due to the fact it would be built where the dart underground is planned to have an underground station. So maybe it will be built if those planning decisions are anything to go by, but then again it is Ireland after all!

It would be of benefit to other cities to have a light rail system. Yes Dublin does need this, but it doesn’t serve any suburbs and that’s a problem.
