I love the dynamic between Vader and Sidious. It's so classically _Sith_: master and apprentice lying to each other or keeping some crucial piece of information to themselves, Vader always exhibiting complete loyalty to Sidious to hide his plans, Sidious feigning obliviousness to Vader's ambition while he works to outplay him. When you think about, virtually the entirety of Episode V's plot was basically the opening moves of a bigass Chess game between Vader and Sidious-- the Rebels, Imperials, and Luke's friends are all just pieces, and Luke himself is the prize.

The best part of this scene is Vader responding that Luke is just a boy and therefore not a threat. When you first hear it, it sounds like the classic bad guy underestimating the hero. I wouldn't use such strong words. Between Vader and Palpatine was never an agreement against Vader's kids. The only concern of Palpatine is Luke becoming a jedi. Then, in Return of the Jedi, it feels more like Vader has given up on turning Luke. He's more fatalist than he ever was. Definitely like this scene better than the original. One of the few changes that was actually better than the original. The added dialogue helps give a bit more insight into the mind games the Emperor plays. Plus, Ian McDiarmid is the BEST emperor. He is one of the best actors in the entire saga.

Indeed, not to mention that the original scene just screwed up the movie Cannon. The Emperor in ROTJ not only looks different but is a better, the original in this scene sounded and looked cheesy. This was better. And you are right, Ian McDiarmard is the best Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious.

I actually like the changed dialog better. In the original version, Vader just seemed like a loyal pawn. In this version, there's a clear undertone of them trying to play each other in typical Rule of Two fashion. We know from the comics that Darth Vader knows about Luke being his son, which means he's feigning ignorance here to hide his own plans from the Emperor. And the way the Emperor says the line after 1:46 conveys that he's considering replacing Vader with Luke.

@@MikehMike01 Yes and no. The Rule and its lore as we know it werent developed yet, but George Lucas did make a conscious decision from the beginning to have only a master and apprentice, coming up with the background lore for it at some point before the prequels. Regardless, the Rule of Two doesnt contradict anything that came out before it, and since he wanted to bring this scene into continuity with the prequels as far as casting goes (and honestly, as a kid, the Emperor not being played by the same guy in ESB and RotJ bothered me, even before the prequels), changing the tone slightly to reflect Sith lore development was a good move

Vader actually gave Palpaltine the idea on having Luke as his new Apprentice. When Vader said if he can be turned he would be a powerful ally, Palpatine realised Luke would be the ideal replacement for Vader, just like how he told General Grievous he will soon have a new apprentice namely Anakin when Dooku died. In fact Palpatine was mostly speaking to himself than to Vader when he said he would be a great asset

I like how when you look at the saga, it’s just palpatine getting the worst luck with apprentices. He starts with Maul, who was clearly too over confident and was beaten by a Padawan. Then he settles for an ex-Jedi who despite being very useful, is still older than him, and wouldn’t get much use from him in the long run. Then he thinks he finally hit the gold mine by finally turning Anakin, an individual literally conceived by the force, only for him to become handicapped shortly afterward, limiting his abilities with force somewhat. It then took over 20 years for palpatine to see someone as a suitable replacement, only for it to be Vader’s son, who would ultimately turn his father back into the light, and lead to his own destruction

Gee, I really love the reactions of some people! "Duh, the new dialogue makes absolutely no sense, Lucas is sooooo stupid!" Well, actually it makes perfect sense. Vader is simply feigning ignorance here. He knows perfectly well who Luke is, he was just trying to find him first in the hope he would help him overthrow Palpatine. And Palpatine sees through Vader's lies, they are both plotting against each other and are fully aware of what the other is up to. They are just playing along.. "Nah, that would be way too subtle from someone like Lucas. The guy is too dumb, he would never have thought of this!". The new dialogue makes perfect sense, but you have to read between the lines: How is that possible? (Dammit, he knows!) Search your feelings, Lord Vader. You will know it to be true. (Stop bullshitting me, I know that you already know) He's just a boy, Obi-Wan can no longer help him... (You need not worry, the boy is no threat at all. Just go about your business and let me deal with him personally) The son of Skywalker must NOT become a Jedi! (There's no way I'll let you use him for your own little schemes. I want him dead, capisce?) If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally... (I will find him and convince him to help me kick your ass! Just wait and see...) Yeeeeessss... The Vader comics makes the relationship with between him and the Emperor MUCH deeper. This conversation takes on a whole new context in light of the other backstory explained in the comics. They were playing each other the whole time. Vader was always looking to overthrow the Emperor. And the Emperor was always looking to replace Vader. It was briefly hinted at in the movies, but fleshed out in the comics. Their relationship was much more complicated than just simply master and student.

By this point, Vader knows Luke's last name, knows he comes from Tatooine, knows Obi-wan trained him and (according to the new comics) gave Luke the lightsaber taken from Mustafar, and Vader has likely guessed at Luke's age... Vader's not stupid. I think he put it together himself and feigned ignorance to the Emperor. Or else, when he asked 'how is that possible' he was referring, not to the fact that Luke's alive, but to the fact that the Emperor put all of this together, too. It just doesn't make sense otherwise.

Vader knows exactly who Luke is at this point and by saying "How is that possible?" he is feigning ignorance to Sidious, but Sidious knows that Vader know's who the "rebel who destroyed the death star" is. It kind of felt like, at the end, that Tarkin was the only friend Vader got - maybe even the only friend he'd ever have after turning to the dark side... I just felt like they really trusted and respectd eachother-and even, at times, opened up and had actual, deep and open-minded conversations with eachother. Concidering this, how upset do you think Vader was with Tarkin's death, concidering the fact that he might've been his only friend...? (i might be overdramatic, but I'd like to see if anyone actually agree with me..)

The other ships are like pawns on the chess board. Boss sends them in first to get the job done. Vader is the queen so he has to act wisely. Of course Palpatine is the king.

What I always liked about this scene was at first Vader is telling the Captains over their low quality holograms to keep searching the astroid field because nothing is more important than the search. As soon as he hears the Emporer wants to talk, he tells his ship to leave the asteroid field, taking his ship out of the search, for the sake of transmission quality.

Knowing from the comics that here, Vader already knew that Luke was his son, makes this scene and the dialogue even better

You can tell that Vaders attitude completely changed when he learned that his son was alive. He convinced palpatine to capture Luke alive instead of having Vader simply kill him on the spot

I personally think Vader found out that Luke was his son sometime before TESB, due to his obsession with finding him, to the point of personally joining away missions. Vader also knew Luke's surname was 'Skywalker' before this scene, so I believe he had likely put two and two together a while ago.

It blows my mind watching this years later and piecing together that this was yet another carefully constructed plot of Palpatine's. He's a true psychopath, having looked after Anakin since he was a child to groom him, hiding behind the mask of a father figure as he manipulates various events to break Anakin mentally in order to make Vader the greatest apprentice a Sith could ever ask for, but once he recognizes his apprentice's son has even greater potential, and knowing how emotionally unstable this family can be when it comes to protecting their loved ones, manipulates Vader into carrying things out as they did. It really loads on a whole other level of tragedy in Episode VI in how Vader deliberately is trying to make Luke his Sith sucessor by trying to bring out his son's dark side to murder his own father, knowing full well that if he succeeds in having his son kill him, it will only empower the monster who broke him and nearly destroyed his family in the first place. Palpatine really is a vile sicko. Arguably the most unsympathetic movie villain ever.

Star Wars: The Legionary Wars trilogy [Plot Outline] Episode I: _The Chosen One_ Over 1,000 years before The Phantom Menace.. As it begins there are no Jedi nor Sith, just force sensitives living in temples like monks practicing midichlorianism. Subsequently, one of these 'force monks'; Alorod Sim the Wise of the temple on Koriban, creates a radicalized faction or 'force cult'. They build lazer swords to arm themselves (the first lightsabers) and proclaim themselves the 'Sith'. They then proceed in marauding bands of personalized star fighters/land speeders, system after system on a sort of ' crusade', attempting to conquer the galaxy in the name of their beliefs and fulfill their Sith prophecy of supremacy over non-sensitives. Over 400 years have surpassed....[56 years prior. Sith Elects adopt the moniker 'Darth' to signify their rank.] The Sith have amassed a considerable territory, with thousands of outlying star systems now under their oppressive rule. Believing war is imminent, King Novis of Coruscant unites his allies in the Alliance of Sovereign Systems to form the first Galactic Republic. The newly christened Chancellor Novis uses his wealth of resources to build a grand defense force. Having recently overran the Doqhit system, after a tense battle with the Quitai army; the Sith led by Darth Sion, dispatch a royal convoy headed for the Core worlds. They massacre its crews and take Zena (the Chancellor's daughter) hostage, demanding tribute from the Chancellor. He refuses and, after much delegation in the Senate chambers, declares war on Red Legion; an interplanetary confederacy allied with the Sith, composed of cyberneticaly enhanced soldiers led by the evil alien warlord Malik. The Chancellor gos to the Temple to consult Yaddle, the wisest of all force monks, about the fate of his daughter and his fortunes in battle. Yaddle then departs Coruscant on a peace mission to end a civil war between Wookie tribes and the Kashars on Kashyyyk. In the first major battle of the war. Malik's fleet is besieged by Republic forces over Rugalia, but the attack is thwarted by Red Legion. Malik vowing swift retaliation. In a pivotal event known as The Siege of Coruscant, the Sith storm the Temple, declaring its monks "Join us or die!". A troubled young orphan raised in the bowels of Coruscant and a pupil of Yaddle, named Gandryth Malgus, defects and becomes a Sith acolyte. The Sith gain temporary control of the Republic capital, forcing its dignitaries to take refuge on the mountainous world of Cedes, a heavily guarded military stronghold. On Cedes, the surviving monks seek out the sacred Kyber crystals, build there own 'lightsabers' and begin training themselves in the art of swordsmanship under the guidance of the living force and mock battles with melee droids, whilst rallying temples across the remaining Republic to their plight to combat the Sith threat, hence becoming the founders of the Jedi Order. On Cedes, Yaddle meets a forces sensitive Republic pilot named Talon Karade, who seeks to learn the ways of the force. Yaddle dubs him 'Padawan' meaning "student" in old Coru.[End ep1] [Ep 2 shifts focus to the Jedi] [During the period between ep1 and ep2, Malgus kills Darth Krait to become the Sith Elect of Coruscant, and is dubbed Darth Nihilus] Episode II: _Knights of the Old Republic_ 14 years on... The once great King Novis has died...and is entombed on Tarvel. Sufficiently trained and having passed the 'trials', the Jedi Knights find themselves in the midst of a Republic effort to re-take Coruscant in his honor. Overwhelmed by Republic forces, the Sith and Red Legion attempt a retreat. Yaddle gos to inspect the ruins of the Jedi Temple where he encounters Darth Nihilus and a duel ensues. Nihilus is wounded by a slash to the face but manages to escape thanks to a homing beacon aboard his Starfighter. The tides now turned, the Jedi [Including: Quinlan Vassis Dia Aleyian Lux Banter Hodo'Na Satile Mara & Eeth Koth] set out behond the safety of Republic space, into the Sith dominated Outer Territories in pursuit of the Sithari (One Sith); who claims to be conceived by the midichlorians and is said to be immortal. Meanwhile, Yaddle would return to his home planet of Churwahi where he would meet his future wife, Tola. Know a skilled Jedi Knight, Talon Karade embarks on a solo mission to free the war prisoners of the Legionary slave ship _Vengeance_ . Using a confiscated Legion fighter, he gains access and frees the captives who take up arms against the remaining crew before encountering and defeating Legion commander Thrawn . Exiting the ships hanger, Karade is intercepted by Darth Rage in his starfighter. After a brief dogfight, Karade is shot down on the nearby moon of Aginaru 6. On its surface, Darth Rage is narrowly defeated by Karade in a clash of lightsabers. Stranded, Karade learns of the Sith world of Koriban and persuades a group of smugglers to take him there. Talon Karade and company rondevu at the gates of the Sith enclave in the Valley of the Dark Lords. Sensing a disturbance in the force, Darth Nihilus tells the Sithari to leave the planet before taking several acolytes to meet the Jedi. Nihilus himself is engaged by Jedi's Satile Mara and Quinlan Vassis who he kills. This distraction allows Karade and Yaddle time to free Zena and the rest of the Sithari's servants before making a dashing escape. Leaving the planets atmosphere, pursuing Sith fighters clash with the Republic's 88th Squadron as the legendary Battle of Koriban commences. Back on the surface, Darth Nihilus takes his L7 _Dagger_ battle speeder to assist Red Legion. The Jedi receive Medals of Valor as well as high praise by Zena, who will succeed her father as Supreme Chancellor. Afterward, the Jedi knights gather to honor the passing of Satile Mara and Quinlan Vassis, who's remains are ceremoniously burned in keeping with midichlorianist tradition. [ End ep 2] [During the period between Ep 2 and Ep 3; in revenge against Yaddle, Darth Nihilus accompanied by several of his best acolytes, would launch a surprise attack against the Jedi Temple of the city of Chiss on the Opterix Major system, massacring many Jedi including Jedi Master Theo Vii Shan] Episode III: _A Fallen Hero_ Republic forces led by General Leer are attempting to retake Vaknum, a metallic world overseen by the Sith Elect Darth Nemesis, in an event known as The Liberation of Vaknum. Republic infintry must locate and dismantle a self-detonation device before it melts the planet. During the fight, Yaddle manages to defeat both Acolytes trained under Nemesis, and finally Nemesis himself. On Vaknum, the Jedi discover Malik's design for a planet-sized superweapon and take them back to Coruscant. Meanwhile, Talon Karade and fellow Jedi Exar Koon are sent to the planet Saazish to investigate the recent assassination of a local Senator but the situation quickly escalates into an all out battle, known as the Saazite Rebellion. Amid the fighting, the Saazites release their God-beast Eneddra, on the Republic; and its up to Karade and Koon to defeat him. Karade remarks "I have a bad feeling about this". During the Battle of Koriban, the Sith Temple was destroyed by Republic artillery, forcing the Sith to relocate to Tyranus; one of the original 13 worlds of Red Legion. In response to the reliquishment of their Sith homeworld, an uprising occurs on Tyranus, but is ultimately put down by the Sithari and his loyalists. One of the leaders of this insurgency, Darth Bane, turns himself over to the Republic, promising the location of the Sithari in exchange for his pardon. A coalition of Jedi and Republic commandos are sent to infiltrate the polar base on Tyranus but, anticipating an attack, are ambushed by Malik's fleet, an epic battle erupts. It is here that the Sithari would meet his end at the hands of Yaddle after an intense climactic lightsaber duel. Elsewhere, Talon Karade brazenly takes it apon himself to dismantle the shield generator onboard Malik's command ship _Assassin_ . Forseeing this, Darth Nihilus awaits him. Overpowered during the duel, Karade's arm is severed by Nihilus who before finishing him foretells "A day will come when your 'Jedi Order' will perish, and the Sithari his great name shall be redeemed" vvvmm!!". Malik is destroyed along with his ship, and the last vestiges of Red Legion disappear into hyperspace. Later on. As the Republic revels in its triumph, Darth Nihilus is seen returning to Tyranus to recover the Sithari's lightsaber, that which would become his most coveted possession. [End ep3] The Sithari slain and their prophecy broken, the Sith receed into exile for a millennia. A long lived Y'Tiven Darth Nihilus would escape and encrypt the "Rule of Two" into the Sith holocron. 700 years later apon his death, Nihilus would apprentice a young Muun Jedi dubbed Darth Plagueis (Palpatine's mentor) and pass on his knowledge of the Dark Side. The former unclaimed Sith territories (including Tatooine; a former ship building hub of Red Legion) would be known for centuries as the Outer Rim. In the centuries following the Battle of Tyranus; the Jedi Knights would attempt to seek out the illusive Sith remnant to no avail. Yaddle profisizing the birth of a 'Chosen One' that would one day bring the force back into balance. Talon Karade for his heroic deeds is memorialized in the Jedi archives. Subsequently; Yaddle and his surviving confidants would found the first Jedi Council on Coruscant. 100 years after the Battle of Tyranus, Tola would birth a son named Yoda. The Republic armada, so ravaged by these conflicts, would never fully recover. And the Republic would be without a proper military until the Clone Wars, relying heavily on the Jedi Order to maintain peace and justice in the Old Republic.

I love this scene, you can see Vader and Palpatine both trying to deceive each other, with Vader refusing to kills Luke, and Palpatine user Vader to get him a younger and stronger apprentice

And yet, so many people fail to understand that both Vader and Palpatine are plotting against each other in that scene, and that they are blatantly lying to each other's face. "It makes no freaking sense, Lucus is so dumb", they say. And when you explain to them what the new dialogue really means, then they go "nah, it would be way too subtle. Lucus would never have thought of that". Jeez, sometimes I really wonder if Lucas didn't overestimate the intelligence of the viewers and their ability to read between the lines.
