The Dashaavtar*-the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu-are central to Hindu mythology, representing divine interventions to restore balance in the universe. In each avatar, Vishnu takes a different form to combat evil and protect dharma. In today’s video, *Prerak Kahanikaar delves into the first five avatars of Vishnu-*Matsya*, *Kurma*, *Varaha*, *Narasimha*, and *Vamana*-each with profound lessons as described in the *Vishnu Puran*.
These first five avatars mark different stages of cosmic evolution and are symbolic of the preservation and restoration of order and righteousness in the world.
*1. Matsya Avatar: The Fish*
The Matsya Avatar is the first incarnation of Vishnu, manifesting as a giant fish during the time of a great flood. According to the Vishnu Puran*, the demon *Hayagriva had stolen the sacred Vedas and hidden them in the cosmic ocean, threatening the survival of knowledge and wisdom. At this time, King Satyavrata encountered a small fish that begged him for protection. As the fish grew into a giant, it revealed itself as Lord Vishnu, warning the king of an imminent flood that would destroy all life on Earth.
Matsya instructed the king to build a large ark, gather his family and the seeds of life, and be ready for the flood. As the waters rose, Matsya towed the ark to safety, thus preserving life and ensuring that creation could continue. Matsya also retrieved the stolen Vedas from Hayagriva, restoring balance to the world.
*2. Kurma Avatar: The Tortoise*
The second incarnation of Vishnu, the Kurma Avatar*, takes the form of a giant tortoise and is associated with the *Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean. In this cosmic event, the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality. However, the mountain used as the churning rod-Mount Mandara-began to sink due to its weight. To stabilize the process, Vishnu took the form of Kurma and supported the mountain on his back, allowing the churning to continue.
Through this effort, many divine treasures emerged from the ocean, including the nectar of immortality, which restored the power of the gods.
*3. Varaha Avatar: The Boar*
The Varaha Avatar is Vishnu’s third incarnation, taking the form of a massive boar to rescue the Earth. In this story, the demon Hiranyaksha had abducted the Earth and submerged it in the cosmic ocean, throwing the universe into chaos. Vishnu incarnated as Varaha and dove into the ocean to battle Hiranyaksha.
After a fierce battle lasting a thousand years, Varaha defeated the demon and lifted the Earth on his tusks, returning it to its rightful place in the universe. This act restored cosmic balance and allowed life to thrive once again.
*4. Narasimha Avatar: The Man-Lion*
The Narasimha Avatar is one of the most dramatic and intense of Vishnu’s incarnations. In this form, Vishnu appears as a half-man, half-lion to defeat the tyrannical demon king *Hiranyakashipu*. The demon had gained a boon from Brahma that made him invincible to death by man or beast, during the day or night, inside or outside, on land or in the air. Drunk with power, Hiranyakashipu began to persecute his own son, *Prahlada*, for worshipping Vishnu.
To protect Prahlada and end Hiranyakashipu’s reign of terror, Vishnu took the form of Narasimha. At twilight, Narasimha emerged at the threshold of the palace, placed the demon on his lap, and tore him apart with his claws-fulfilling all the conditions of the boon.
*5. Vamana Avatar: The Dwarf Brahmin*
In the fifth incarnation, Vishnu took the form of *Vamana*, a dwarf Brahmin, to humble the demon king *Bali*. Bali had gained control over the three worlds-Earth, Heaven, and the Underworld-through his power and devotion. To curb Bali’s growing dominance, Vishnu disguised himself as a humble dwarf and approached Bali during a grand sacrificial ceremony.
Vamana asked Bali for a seemingly modest boon-three paces of land. Bali agreed, but to his astonishment, Vamana grew to an enormous size. With one step, he covered the Earth; with the second, he covered the heavens. When no space remained for the third step, Bali humbly offered his own head. Pleased with Bali’s devotion, Vishnu granted him immortality and made him the ruler of the underworld.
The first five avatars of Vishnu-*Matsya*, *Kurma*, *Varaha*, *Narasimha*, and *Vamana*-each carry profound insights into the preservation of life, the balance of the cosmos, and the triumph of righteousness.
