Planes are perfectly fine at 1,000ft apart. That is minimum vertical separation. This is really nothing to report on in my opinion. Maybe it’s different since I didn’t see it in person, but 1,000ft separation is legal

Lateral separation is only important when there is no vertical separation, if you have proper vertical separation then you do not need lateral separation, this is common in aviation, especially on oceanic tracks, aircraft will often be within a few hundred feet laterally, but 1,000’ vertically. In this case there was adequate vertical separation, making this a complete non event.

"700-1000 feet vertically, unknown horizontally" is such a funny sentence. They could have been 6 miles away at a funny camera angle for all we know. Even if they passed right over each other, 1000 feet vertically is acceptable IFR separation. What exactly are we reporting on?

Nice angle dude! Mid air collisions in the u.s are extremely rare. Anyone could catch a video that looks like planes are colliding. Stop the fear mongering. Flying is and always will be safer than driving.
@elevenelevenlife3375

No one is fear mongering. United’s problems this year, for example have been alarming. From a bystander perspective this looks uncomfortably close, even as a planespotter. The problem is lateral distance. But since you’re the expert here, please explain.
@Tangent360
3 ай бұрын
@@elevenelevenlife3375 Lateral distance is irrelevant as long as *total* distance is 1000 ft or above, regardless of what it looks like from the ground. Showing a video that is guaranteed to have no "yeah, turns out that was totally fine" follow-up and just looks scary from a distance is absolutely fear-mongering. Ever since the *actual* big problem with the plug door blowing out of the Alaska Airlines flight the media has been showing every single aviation-related thing they can find that can come across as scary. It's how media works: Make the viewer angry and/or scare them. It's a well-known way to get more viewers and the media uses it every time they can.

I actually had a flight today and it was quite short but I have PTSD and I get quite scared but my friend actually told me that it’s safer flying than driving. I’ve survived two car accidents so that spoke to me. Flying is and will always generally be safer.

Flying is safe, but they use the miles-traveled statistic. I'd rather see journeys-completed. A 3,000-mile flight is one trip, a five-mile drive is one trip. (As for flying, I am reassured by all the daily flights at my airport multiplied by all the airports around the world, multiplied by the days in the year. Accidents are very rare.)

The 757 lost a wheel, not a tire. Tire and wheel are not the same thing. One consists of a great hunk of aluminum alloy with a tire fitted to it. The other is a big lump of rubber. In both cases they lost the wheel, not the tire.
