I wish Trimble had never acquired SketchUp. Always increasing prices with little justification. Trimble: "Here, let me give you dashed lines for almost twice as much money per year". Trimble under breath: "Suckers". EDIT: I think I misunderstood the new pricing models. Saw "SketchUp Classic" and thought it was referring to the make version. I didn't realize "SketchUp Pro" (the subscription model) adds a bunch of software.

It is great that Sketchup has finally recognized the need for different linetypes. Here are a few more suggestions: 1. Make the hidden linetypes applicable to Section Cuts. When we do floor plans and set the section cut at 4' AFF, we would like to get the advantage of seeing demolition walls, etc. in hidden line. 2. Site plans include utilities, which have special linetypes for power, water sewer, etc. They include a line with a text incorporated. _________ GAS____________, or ____________SS___________, etc. How about letting us customize linetypes, too?

I take it that the "basic geometry" is still kept on Layer 0, and the groups and purely informational lines would be on "dashed" layers.
@MrJujuthedude

Can you set this up differently between different scenes, ie. would the different settings be recorded by scenes as is currently with camera position / time / fog / etc.?
@AaronMakingStuff

Line styles are tied directly to the layer. If you wanted to change line types from one scene to another, you would need to duplicate geometry on multiple layers (each with a different line style).

I feel like this would be a huge improvement -- set dashes to scenes, as with style & layer visibility. Currently I'm not seeing how to incorporate the dashing into my workflow (construction docs) and will probably continue to manually draw dashes in Layout. I'm definitely not duplicating a bunch of geometry to have dashed versions -- maybe I'll make section slices that are dashed or something.
@christinaeneroth675

Nah, I'm waiting until it can be set per entity, so I can use different line styles on different edges in the same drawing context without breaking the golden rule of SketchUp, and so I don't have to litter my models with layers I don't need for visibility control.
@isthmus69
5 жыл бұрын
Per entity would be nice... I'm still trying to figure out if the new dashed lines can be used in my workflow for construction documents -- in which the dashes of each group / entity change depending on the scene. For example, I might want the foundation to be solid lines on the foundation drawings, but dashed lines on the floor drawings. Seems like I would need to create multiple copies of the foundation to achieve this. Or maybe via a group within a group (each with its own layer assignment), but that would get messy. Maybe I would create a 2D dashed foundation outline in sketchup and have a "doc" layer show in the corresponding scene, which is a slight workflow improvement over tracing outlines manually in Layout (and managing THOSE layers in LO)

I know this is better implemented but there's been a dashed line extension on smustard since 2006...
@AaronMakingStuff
5 жыл бұрын
Too true! The extensions have dealt with this by splitting lines into smaller pieces (often alternating visible and invisible segments). While this works ok, editing can be an issue, and model size s increased considerably (one line turns into dozens, or more). This functionality gives you dashed lines that behave like a single line without impact on model size.
@kerryadams5596

Wow! A lot of negative comments here about the lousy update and the expensive prices. The dashed lines upgrade alone pays for itself multiple times over in my business over a year. For me, this update has been a long time coming, and I am over the moon about it. Yes, the subscription business model is more expensive, but it is still cheap to have this brilliant bit of software do what it does. Think about it. Plus from what I gather, Aaron and the SU team will now have the ability to provide upgrades throughout the year. Bring it on!!!
