It's almost impossible to alias your phone number anymore. Just about every service now a days checks if it's a VOIP number and doesn't allow you to use it if it is. I'm not sure how to deal with this, other than getting a burner phone, which doesn't really help that much since it's only one additional number and could still be easily linked to you.

Our cars are spying on us too, and they're a TROVE of info. Question for anyone who sees this: Generally speaking, what is the best model year to optimize for privacy and modern features? Which "features" should I try to avoid? I'm guessing any models 2010 and newer are out?

@@techlore exactly the kind of response I was looking for, thank you!! [Every time I do a search for this, there doesn't appear to be any comprehensive analysis, but cars seem like a HUGE weak link.] The 3G point makes a lot of sense.

@@techlore The issue is that buying an older car will only buy you so many years before you're forced to buy a new one after that one breaks down. What then?
@AvengeTheBlade
3 ай бұрын
Personally, I would say the pros of having a newer vehicle that has a much lower chance of breaking down on you as soon as you buy it would outweigh the cons of being potentially spied on. I love privacy as much as any of us on this channel, but I also know just how frustrating it is to have an older car with older features that is prone to things breaking down, especially when it matters.

What do you do when a data brokerage company doesn't comply with your request that they delete your data from their system? Bc it's technically not illegal for them to refuse your request in the US, right? What recourse do we have then?
@ellis7796

Asking bc this happened to me, with the website/company "ZoomInfo" listing info/data that they've gleaned from my LinkedIn (an account I deleted months ago). Months and months after I requested that ZoomInfo take it down (and even sent a second request) and the page is still up for anyone with an internet connection to see

Are there any self-hosted options to do our own deleting functionality? Or Open Source options?
@techlore
3 ай бұрын
At the end of the day it requires a service/person needing access to your data. Open source in this context isn't a huge help. Example: You can open source your site but at the end of the day you're needing to see user data in order to submit it all. If you want more control of the process you should follow the manual steps outlined! That's almost the equivalent of 'self hosting' in this context.

Would there be a use for a deletion service for a person who never had an internet account, a mobile phone and a credit card? I'm thinking of the kind of folks who just supply their employer with their SSN, have a driving license, utilitiy bills and a bank account for loans/savings etc.
@henry-k9l

Technically yes, because even if you didn't directly supply personal information someone else may have done so. For example, if someone used you as a reference on a job application, your information was supplied to another company.

If the service could end data brokers then you'd have a point but they can't. It's like how firefighters don't benefit from the existence of House fires. They can fight them, they can advise on how to prevent them but they well never run out of business unfortunately.
