I just watched your "Measure of a Man" episode before this one, and it made me realize that the scene where Data specifically tells Riker that he's learned the value of setting aside one's genuine beliefs and values for the sake of protecting another living being is pretty direct foreshadowing of his tolerance paradox moment before choosing to kill the Collector. It seems like it's kind of indicating that, if he hadn't gone through the experience of seeing Riker in the trial, Data might have lacked the mental tools to overcome his killing-aversion programming. In this way, the two episodes kind of compliment and parallel each other in a way I hadn't previously appreciated.

I don't get your hang up on them not crying. They are in the military and know the risks. They have seen other officers die before, and they have a mission that they are required to fix. The water supply on another planet is being poisoned, and they are the only ones who can fix it. That mission needs to be carried out right away. They collect all the data they can and analyze it while going to complete their mission. That's what would be expected of military officers. It's also really obvious that many people in the crew are shaken by Data's death and they are having a hard time with it. I also really hated the conversation Deanna had with Worf. I don't mind them having a conversation, but Deanna kept making assumptions about how Worf is feeling. Deanna says something about how she would feel if she were in Worf's position, and it almost seemed like she was saying he should feel that way. But as Worf points out, he is a Klingon and they deal with death in a different way than humans. It just really annoyed me how she seemed to be making assumptions and not really listening to what Worf was saying.

About the no-crying, to be fair, they are military officers so it’s not unimaginable that they would suppress any overt emotionality.

STop and go traffic is actually way worse for gas. Momentum is a thing. Cruising is much more efficient then having to constantly accelerate and decelerate. i.e. look at the miles per gallon for highway vs city driving. Highway is much more efficient.

@@DwightKShrute0 but not in confining him, or destroying the system that generated the field in the ship with the weapon he had and the lack of hostage to control his actions with. Even if the device is on him, Data can cause a whole lot of trouble and manage this guy simply by being ready to shoot in self defense with android reflexes should his would be captor try something cute like sending a command to the computer, which would then justify the shooting, and Data could simply tell him it was the case that he would shoot him if he did anything Data interpreted as such an act, since it was the only way to compel him to justice and free himself. He has full mimicry of voice, he could impersonate his captor to the computer if voice controlled, and if commands require an access code then what's his face would have had to utter it to use them himself and data never sleeps, nore has reason to leave him alone. He may have a force field, but that does not make him free, just a captive to data in a slightly different manner. A force field certainly can block an incoming attack, but it also means you can't move past an object that is pushing on the force field, even if you can move within the force field you can only move as far as the edge of the field yourself, and try to push against the field itself effectively trapping you. Even if that means the force field was designed so that you could touch it from within and not bule hurt the. You can still only apply so much force. Even if the force field is expandable there must be some attenuation to it's ability. It would have been far more effective for Data's captor to envelop Data in a force field to control him, than the other way around.
@DwightKShrute0

@@qsquared8833 I agree Data could have done more stuff to make him surrender at the end I guess. Though there's other people on the ship, so he could be risking other people coming in and surrounding him and putting a forcefield around him. As for the force field, the force field generator was on the guy's belt, so it moved around with him. That meant Data couldn't touch him but he could touch Data. Also, if I recall correctly, it is a force field that affects positronic nets and that is specifically why it affects Data, which would mean the guy would be able to move in and out of it if he wanted to. I'm assuming he did it that way because he wanted Data to be able to move around and interact with his guests.

How have societies always tried to enforce whatever the dominant or chosen ethical and moral framework they operate under? Like, you can't disassociate the fact that America has centuries of lynchings of both African-American Slaves and Citizens in its past, and it was accepted without a thought. White Supremacy and the aspects in culture that enforced it were dominant ideas with very little sustained pushback until the Civil Rights Era... A century after the Civil War. What changed? A lot, and many people of Color in the states paid for that change in blood, broken bones at the hands of cops and even death. Eventually more and more people understood, the racism in both the culture and its affects on various systems in the nation had to be challenged and making displays of racist attitudes in public a taboo. And this is why "canceling" is a nonsense term applied today. It's a phenomenon that's ALWAYS been in every society. I mean seriously... The Right literally held hearings with government power to enforce their antipathy to Socialism and Communism, as well as enforcing social taboos on those subjects. Yet I bet you wouldn't call that "canceling"?

Look, its your podcast so of course you can do what you want on it. But you going off topic constantly about Del Taco or other stuff was really obnoxious here. I don't mind the cussing and swearing, I don't mind Ricardo getting names wrong, I don't mind the jokes about everyone fucking all the time or the Worf impersonations that sound like Sean Connery and I really enjoy your discussions about the content and certain moral implications of choices and technologies. But having to listen to drawn out discussions about trivial stuff that have nothing to do with the episode at hand is getting annoying. I get it, you are hanging out, you are having fun and going off topic a little is part of the podcast experience. But I gotta say, the derailing in this specific episode for example was really aggressive. Like, you already came back to topic and were like "Right, where were we" and right at that moment someone is like "Oh, but can we agree that Del Taco sucks" and you spend another ten minutes discussing it. Again, its your podcast, so of course you can do whatever you want. And I doubt at this point wether I view it changes much for you, so of course you could be like "Whatever". It just sucks a bit that to get to the good stuff I have to listen to pointless discussions.

We "allowed" the Nazis to exist? What, are we going to develop precrime, as in that stupid Tom Cruz movie, on an international level.
@miguelvelez7221
8 ай бұрын
Being actually cognisant of ethics and putting high value on personal responsibility is a thing in humanity, even when individuals are caught up in the often impersonal forces of history. A society does "allow" things. Then people act like that's IMPOSSIBLE and thus you have an underpinning to rationalize inaction or the demagoguery against people trying to change things. Sorry... German Society, so much as one could define it, did allow Nazism to flourish by not challenging it enough as Hitler's movement rose to power. American society ALLOWED chattel slavery based upon "racial origins". Allowed. For a long time. It's not enough for there to be an enforcement of some injustice, the flip side is also a lack of resistance. And yes, on the international stage the world turned a blind eye to Hitler and there were many nations and non-Germans who contributed to Nazi progress. And that all could have been opposed... It just wasn't.
