This is quality writing. Data handled the situation without doing something outside of his personality or capability, and even without making Lore suddenly stupid. Data who has enough strength to overwhelm everyone, has instead been focusing on solving situations by thinking them through thoroughly and using lessons learned from previous experiences. All of that made him able to predict how Lore would try to beat him, and instead of killing Lore, Data healed his emotionally broken brother.

In essence, there is more of Data than there is of Lore. Lore had very few memories because he spent the majority of his existence either deactivated or disassembled. When lore decided to keep all of data’s memories those memories became the dominant personality of the fused being. I can think of no more human thing to do than giving up everything you are for someone you love or someone suffering. I think that while Data knew that Lore would probably view his memories as mere prizes to be claimed, thereby giving him the opening that he needed to overcome his brother, I think he also saw that the reason why Lore is the way he is, he's suffering. Think back to all the times Lore appeared in the Next Generation, whether it was switching places with Data, meeting his father, or interacting with the Borg, Lore in his own way was always trying to find and form a connection with others, albeit doing a horrible job of it. All his efforts, time and time again, were surreptitiously trying to find a sense of belonging and be loved, and each time he failed. Look at Lore's face at 2:37 as he grabs Spot. How eager he is to find the miracle that is love. Lore lets go of every single memory of Data's, his Sherlock pipe, Tasha Hologram, and the playing cards. Yet, after Data is seemingly gone, he still holds on to Spot, smiling, finally attaining what he had been searching for his entire life. By giving Lore all his memories of joy, friendship, and love, Data allowed his brother to live in his memories, healing Lore while saving Data. Data didn't conquer his brother. He healed him and, in doing so, allowed him finally to feel connected to another, both literally and emotionally.

Data was right, a simple creature can teach you things about yourself that only they have the capability of doing so. Thats why it hurts so uniquely when we lose a beloved pet, it hurts differently than when a human we know dies, its because it stings a different area of our being. I always encourage people to adopt a new pet once a beloved one dies. What better way to honor their memory than to reward the love they gave to us by showing it to another?

Lore was playing checkers, while Data was playing chess. That's all you need to know. This reminds me of "Peak Performance," which is the 21st episode of the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In this episode, Data participates in a war game simulation against a highly skilled strategist named Kolrami. Despite Data's superior performance, Kolrami manages to defeat him in the final round, causing Data to become upset and doubt his own abilities. However, Data's mentor, Captain Picard, helps him realize that winning is not always the most important thing, and that he should focus on doing his best and learning from his experiences. Data comes to understand that his true value lies not in his ability to win, but in his ability to use his unique skills and perspective. And in doing so, prevail / win. He beats Kolrami in the end, just like how he beat Lore. Lore got played.

As others have said such amazing acting, especially considering that Spiner hasn’t played Lore in 30 years. I’ve watched this scene several times and am still picking up new stuff. Like when Data pulls out Spot and talks about how he taught him to love, Lore is looking on with a confused expression, because he’s never loved anything but himself and doesn’t really understand, but he knows he wants it. And when he grabs Spot away Data has a look of pity for Lore. I must admit I got misty-eyed. When they hug each other it reminded me of the TOS episode when Kirk got split into good and evil versions. And when they “rematerialize” him as one he hugs the “evil” version of himself. Similarly as Data embraces Lore and they basically reform as the best of both worlds, as it were 😉. I think this one exchange is probably better than anything in the Next Gen movies.

Lore didn't love just himself. When Dr. Soong announced to Data and Lore that he was dying, Lore's first emotional reaction was shock and disbelief. He couldn't imagine life without his creator, and that's not a reaction someone incapable of love would have. Then the jealousy kicked in, because he wasn't going to accept Data as (in his mind) Soong's favorite.

This scene felt earned and genuine as a way of bringing a final and emotionally satisfying closure to Data and Lore's relationship over the last 35 years. Since 1989 we've watched data develop, evolve change. We've been him become something more than he was ever made to be. Across TV series, movies. Until now. Where we see all of that build to a crescendo. 30 decades of watchers, of people following the journey of this character. To see it come to this. To see a whole lifetime of memories, in which so many millions of people were invested. Brent Spiner, and all those writers, and all those actors, they all played a role. I noticed at 3:15, when Data's memories start to kick in, notice where the visual effect kicks in: Lore's "heart". The memory of Spot became Lore's memory, so he learned what it felt like to selflessly care for another. Notice how even in his shock Lore carefully sets Spot down.

As far as I can see it, this scene is not about one of the two brothers winning, it's their realizing they are in fact the same, and so in the end become one. Actually reminds me a lot of an episode in DS9 where Jadzia Dax had problems due to the memories of a Dax host they had not told her about, and who happened to have been a homicidal maniac. She in the end turned out healed because she embraced that part of herself - and there was also a scene where she physically embraced "Joran" to symbolize that.

I wish "Insurrection" and "Nemesis" were written like this scene which gives sense and is touching.
