Hyundai salesperson: "dang, that's the 3rd time this week you buy the same car"

Haha! Considering the IIHS bought cars off dealers lots, I can actually see this situation occurring. Although I think there's more of a time lapse between tests. Just to prep the vehicle and dummy takes a few days for each test, I believe.

I am pretty sure that the reason a steering wheel should not break off is because of multi impact crashes, so on the second or third impact you would hit a hard, solid, and sharp metal object. The other reason is that the airbag becomes USELESS when the steering wheel breaks of into your lap AND if the car rolls after hitting the object you have a object flying around in the safety space.
@roostersideburns3440

@WeekendsOutsideFL

By 2004 auto makers were really cleaning up what I consider to long have been unreasonably dangerous vehicles. If you look for example at a 1994 Honda Accord…. Look at the side of it there’s virtually no structure to protect the occupant from a broadside crash. A 2020 Accord is far safer. Do any of you think that the increases in speed limits since the 2000s are unfortunately offsetting the improvements in vehicle structure?
@carsandcrashtests
2 жыл бұрын
All of these improvements were due almost entirely in part to the IIHS tests. Had they not started conducting these and showing the results on Dateline, manufacturers wouldn't have done anything about safety. Anything that cost them money they couldn't make back would have been pushed aside like the Ford Pinto gas tank defect, when Ford realized it was cheaper to pay out monies to victims than it was to fix the problem entirely. While a new Accord is safer, it will be interesting to see the variances in the new tougher side crash test. Its structure was rated good, but the intrusion resistance wasn't as high as the Camry, the Sonata, or Optima. While the old test focused more on B-Pillar intrusion, the new test seems to focus more on door beam strength. As far as speed goes, I'll quote Jeremy Clarkson who said "Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that's what gets you." You can have the best structure in the world, but if your internal organs are crashing around inside of you in a 70-80 mph crash, there isn't much that a good structure can do to prevent that. The new focus needs to be on restraint systems assisting the body in slowing down the forces in a crash to keep the internal injuries at a minimum.
@WeekendsOutsideFL
2 жыл бұрын
@@carsandcrashtests Now that you mention that, I had not yet thought of an idea that would actually not be very expensive... That restraint you are suggesting could be something akin to race car drivers... The seatbelt can become an adjustable but comfortable harness... It would not cost much. More restraint points, and gradual tensioners! I wrote a letter to IIHS thanking them for all the work they do. I still think that until automated crash protection safety is more advanced and ubiquitous, legal speed limits need to be reduced in some situations and roads.

@@carsandcrashtests It is funny you mention Honda this way. I have generally had this internal hunch that Honda bodies were kind of flimsy in structure. Am I the only one who felt bad for Kia's engineers? I'm sure they did quite a lot to beef up the Spectra's crash protection, especially when it's predecessor the Sephia, got Poor two times in a row, yet it still got Poor!
@carsandcrashtests
2 жыл бұрын
Structurally they did do a lot, as the 2004 Spectra earned a Good rating vs. a Marginal for the previous Sephia/Spectra. However, the issue with the 2004 Spectra was, in contrast to the previous Sephia/Spectra when the airbag deployed too late and deflated too slowly which bounced the dummy around, the airbag had already begun deflating when the dummy contacted it, due to its vent hole design. That, combined with the dummy moving forward too much, contributed to a Marginal head rating when the dummy hit the steering wheel hard thru the airbag. In 2005, they redesigned the airbag vent holes to reduce these forces, moving it up to an Acceptable rating. There was still a head and chest injury risk though, and while I am glad they improved the head injury rating, they did nothing for the chest. I feel like they could have done more to give it a better rating, but wanted to do just enough so it wasn't rated Poor. An example to prove that it can be done came in 2013, when the Mazda CX-5 was small-overlap tested. It only earned a Marginal rating largely due to its poor structure. Mazda reengineered the CX-5 for 2014, and modified the front and side airbags, allowing it to move to a Good rating in the span of one model year. After 2005, Kia didn't make any changes to the frontal offset crash performance until the Spectra became the Forte in 2010. Granted they are two different tests, but if Kia really wanted to, they probably could have. To quote Brian O'Neill after the 1998 Toyota Sienna test: "It can be done, you can get really good performance, it doesn't have to cost money, it just has to be a priority."

3:00 this is hard to watch for me as 2004 kia spectra owner :D I am suprised that they rated the elantra better because they are basically same cars. But it is not very suprising, it is known they were building cheap cars back then. When they were new, they cost significantly less than cars from competing brands at least here in europe also paint and rust protection were bad, interior smells like cheap chinese plastic. Btw if i had to crash i would rather be sitting in my 1996 bmw 5 series e39 which seems to be very safe considering it's age

I like kia's response to the IIHS. The spectra had a good structure rating but it seems they didn't make the airbag strong enough to prevent neck injuries and also leg and chest.
