My favorite thing to do when I get a firearm. look up every stamp and marking. There is Fascinating information you can find about a firearm just by looking at these markings.

I'd like to see how they made some of those stamps back then. Some are tiny with lots of detail. Thanks for watching Snapper!

Great video Richard. I hope it reaches and helps a lot of people. When I was a younger man starting my firearms journey back in the 90s I really enjoyed chasing the stories of a particualr model or dating some of them etc. Back then much of it was via books and old magazines. Much like many things in life, the chase is where the fun is and not necessarily the end result.

Lol. My wife used to get mad at me when I would buy a vehicle, fix it up, and then sell it. I tried explaining that the part I enjoyed was working on it. She won't let me touch the title to my Ranchero. Figuring things out and working on them is the fun part. Thanks for watching!

Numrich is a great source of information but I can’t tell you the last time I looked at their page and they actually had a part I needed. Seems everything has been out of stock for a long time now. Good video. You’ve got some very interesting guns there.

I immediately thought that the title of the video was referring to "dating", as in a relationship with my antique firearms... 😂 Yes, I often DO feel like I am in a relationship with my antique guns. Esp my Colt Police Positive in 38 Colt New Police. My Browning Model 30 (AKA Stevens Ranger 30) often gets jealous, but my Police Positive has my heart. 💔😫

I do have “grandpa’s old shotgun”. Actually 2. Paternal grandpa was born in 1884. Family history says he bought the shotgun for his 16th birthday, that would be in 1900, he bought it used because he couldn’t afford a new gun. It is a Royal Gunworks 12ga double barrel outside hammers double trigger. It has Damascus barrels. There are a number of cartouches on it but I have never been able to date it. The other gun from my maternal grandpa is a Steven’s model 24 .22lr/.410 3”. No serial number. This gun is in VERY NICE condition and I have shot it a bunch in my youth (I’m 75). Do you think Numrich could help?. I did have an experience with it about 15 - 20 years ago. The selector switch broke. The gunsmith I took it to had it for about 6 months before he could find a replacement part.

That's really cool. I love the stories about firearms being passed down to family. The bad thing about Numrich is that they only receive parts when people sell them their old, broken firearms. It could be a while before they get the same gun you have, if ever. Then the part you need could be broken or missing from the gun they bought from someone else. They are a salvage yard for firearms, but they do offer reproduction parts for some models.

I have a really old double barrel black powder long gun. And I’m guessing it’s older than the ones that you showcased in this video. I’d love to find the history/age on it. I came across it while going through my recently departed father’s belongings. Where would I find any distinguishing markings on it to help identify it?
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
4 ай бұрын
I would start by field stripping it, like you were going to completely clean everything. look closely at the metal parts that are covered by the wood. If it's really old and was made in the states, it may not even have any sort of cartouches or markings. There were some smaller makers and even some individual craftsmen that may not have left any markings. I hope this helps a little bit. Thanks for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Yea I am going to have to go over it. Do you know if they chromed things long ago? I know they did the inside of rifle barrels. But the whole barrel is chromed. I don't know if my grandpa did that later or not.

@Uncle_BW the patent for chrome plating was filed in 1894 I think. It didn't really become common in manufacturing until the 1930s. Nickel plating has been around since the early 1800s.
