Also check the distributor shaft play. Z cars have shaft bushings and they wear out. To much play causes the air gap to change. Replaced my 280 distributor years ago for that reason. Great video.

Good video again. Great camera work and positioning. Looking forward to Ep 9.5. Your commentary adds so much to the videos. Thank you for reading and studying ahead of time and knowing the fundamentals behind what you're doing. Frankly there is no bad information given on this channel and that says a lot. Heck, you don't even hide your mistakes. A bonus for the more sadistic viewers out there, ha! I'm stilllllll wondering about cyl #5 man. Spark at the wires doesn't necessarily mean spark at the plugs. I would ask you if you've pulled it off and looked at it but I don't want to mess up your groove so please don't answer. If you keep this kind of stuff up much longer, you're going to go get a job at Datsun Spirit. Passion and proficiency combined together - that's the right stuff.

Oh yeah, the time that I spend researching is much MUCH longer than the time I spend actually working on the car. I read up on books and forums in my freetime over the weekdays, and work on the car and edit videos on the weekends (why is why I often publish videos late Sunday nights). Haha I hear you on the cylinder number 5, but you should see/hear this thing run now. It's silky smooth (relatively)! I still need to put some miles on the plug before I pull it again, but I'm just a bit more hopeful that I'm going to find a healthy set of plugs. I launched this thing hard the other day, and it broke traction at 2nd gear. Just all smiles. But then again, I still haven't done any work other than replace parts on the FI system, so we can only improve here on out. I feel so ready for the dyno already, but I want to do as much tuning on my own as I can so I don't waste my money! I met Eiji at Datsun Spirit. That dude has forgotten more about these cars than I will probably know. I want to go bother the dude some more just to learn from him, but it sounds like he's super busy with winter engine builds. Maybe he does need some help at his shop. Hell, I'd work for free.

When I was a teenager my Dad told me to pull the wires off and see if the engine ran differently with it off. He had me pull the coil wire off and I got zapped hard. He was laughing his ass off. Oddly enough the Datsun 310gx kept running with the coil wire off...

When I was a teenager by dad just growled at me when I would work on the car. I don't blame him though, given my early penchant for taking things apart that I don't know how to put back together. Yeah I shocked myself several times on the spark wires too. Not fun! Eventually I learned to use insulated pliers if I ever needed to touch the wires while the car was on.

something to consider when using a multimeter to check voltages, due to the high impedance of a modern digital multimeter, there could be a reading of voltage under essentially NO load. If there was a high resistance fault somewhere in the wiring dropping the working voltage below what is needed, the meter would not tell you. In this case an older analog VOM style at least has some load, or even better a test light that at least pulls maybe .25 amp would load the circuit enough to show any high resistance problems. Also a common fault on the dizzy is a carbon trace that goes form the HV points to ground, killing he spark to the wire. Can be hard to see. I often use the spark test light at the center term of the dizzy to see if spark is getting there 1st, that way I have cleared the issue thru the coil HT lead.

Would it be worthwhile to measure the resistance from the battery positive connection to the connection going to the first terminal of the external resistor to find any high resistance problems? Thanks for the tips as always. I'm learning quite a lot! I won't pretend that I have a strong fundamental grasp of electrical testing/diagnosing (I definitely should've paid more attention in school) beyond the basics. I'm basically just reading up a ton on the topic and parroting the sources as I learn by trial-and-erroring on my own car.

would not hurt, but prob just be a lot easier to use a test lamp, while not precise it would catch the issue 99% of the time. I did a test for a video, hold the pos lead in your hand and touch the point you want to check with a finger (no direct contact of the lead to the test point), even with the 1 meg typical skin resistance the meter will show 12v or near that. IF there was a problem checking the resistance points along the way would be the way to find it.

Great video, I can't find a cheap electronic distributor for my 1973 620 so I found a cheap cardone but its for a 1978 620 it looks and fits like my 1973 except the advance is pointing opposite,,I installed it but I have no spark ,the gap is the .3 ,any ideas what could be wrong?

Hello, big fan of yours videos! I’m starting to restore my Datsun 180B hardtop 1975 might be called 610 series in America, not sure. Can you give me the reference of the spark plug wires ?

Do you think the ballast resistor will not work if the ceramic thing is broken?
@RestorationForBeginners

Ehhhhh I mean the ceramic is supposed to serve as a insulator, so I don't think it'll matter too much? It doesn't hurt to test with a multimeter though. I think I have a video on that.
