Dave Allen was a somewhat controversial figure for his time because he was openly atheist. Something that he joked about quite often in his sketches. That's why his signature signoff, "Goodnight, thank you, and may your God go with you." can be read with a double meaning.

@@maggiemae9099 I compare Ricky and Dave a lot. They both have very benevolent human souls. DAve Allen did documentaries about "eccentric" people, but never did it for laughs, he was truly interested in people who were "outside the norm". He had a great great fondness for humanity. Jamel, thanks for playing this segment, I'd completely forgotten "Into the hole he goes..." "standing before the pearly gates, arguing with St Peter, when there came an ALMIGHTY SNEEZE... and nobody knew what to say." Every Saturday night PBS broadcast his shows, fun times. one last thing, he also did short film gags, and he'd sit in that chair during the video.

You really need to understand Catholicism as is was, especially in the 1930s through the 80s and especially in Ireland to get his schtick. Grew up with him on TV in Australia. Refreshing because every story was relatable, his delivery was excellent, his skits hilarious, and not a cuss word anywhere. There’s a lot of him to explore. Another comedian worth looking into, also because he was clean (for the most part), is John Pinette. Heavy-set guy, most of his comedy revolved around food, his size & weight loss, but extremely funny. Lost him too early, he was only 50.

Yeah, grew up with him in late 70s and early 80s on tv in Australia and had Paul Hogan Show in same time period in Australia. We were spoilt for comedy shows back then. Nothing seems to exist like those shows anymore. I think by mid to late 80s both tv shows over and looks like Dave Allen did stand up tours like I assume this is but Paul Hogan went the silly movie route with Crocodile Dundeee and the silly american lightweit comedy movie nonsense. So those shows we lost on tv as a result. But loved these shows whilst had them as a kid.

I didn't know at the time but, it was from the late 70s and I was there in 84-87. Most of what you watch of him is from that time period. He has some hilarious stuff, stories and skits he did on his own show. He's been dead for many years now but, his stand up and TV show is really good. I have the advantage of being half English so I get a few of the jokes and comments that Americans in general would not understand. I watched his show as much as possible while I was there. yes I grew up with DFave allen on th4 TV I remember talking to an Irish colleague and asked him about his take on Dave Allen and as he was about 20 years ypunger than me had no ida who he was. I also love the fact although a unforgiving atheist he would always finish Goodnight an may your god go with you. I always took that two ways although being young that it was a blessing (being a good human) or making sure that the gods you followed (recognizing the many faiths out there) go with and not linger to bother with him. I recommend Cometary sketch and also a great silent skit called did you f@rt @ transposes a in csse of comment censorship. The comedy sketch series I remember is Dave Allen at large. A modern another unashamed atheist who some think influenced bo burnham is an Australian Genius Tim Minchin. I will warn you that he uses A LOT of profanity, but he is very funny. His 'Freedumb' and 'Airplane Etiquette' would be good ones to start with. His 'Taking An MD Sufferer To A Brothel' is insane, and his two-parter on 'Gun Control' is a must-see. For that last, I believe every single point he makes is a valid one.
