Thanks for sharing. Its amazing to see the launch technic used on this site! I have a question: the LZ seems pretty small from the video. What if you overshot? Is LZ slightly uphill so that overshot opportunity is reduced?

That's why they fly single surface. Overshoot, you end up in the cars in the parking lot.

It's really not that small. 125m with a small uphill slope versus 110m and flat for one of our LZ's here in Newcastle Australia, and we have a main road and powerlines if you overshoot...and we still land our topless gliders there all the time. Just need to make sure you know your shit, and first landing there should be in a single surface to get your eye in. I have fond memories flying there in 2013 and would love to go back. Tell Dave and Tim Johnboy from Australia said G'day

@@SVSky Takeo, as a visitor you'll be on a SS, so you shouldn't have any problem with over shooting. Study landing videos with rear POV, to become familiar with angles you need to see. With a SS, you'll land short & hit the lower terrace, no problem. You & Lijian will need to dial back you flare a bit as both of you will be more used to little or nil wind landings. Both of you will find the landings & launches easier than Funston. Don't believe me? Ask Joey Villaflor for his opinion.

@Lijian Liu Lijian, from what I've seen of your landing videos, you should have no problems, even if you were using your U2. The LZ is long & split level.... lower downwind portion & upwind higher. Remember, the air is smooth & laminar. There is no chunkiness in the air, except if Rabbit is doing #2 on the LZ.

Looks to me like the same site Bob Wills flew yrs and yrs ago. The story was he got cold so somebody launched with a jacket and handed if off to Bob. [flying standards] lol I recognize the scenery. Could be wrong though

Jon Sky Surfer -- I have a hard time following the flyers with my video camera because it is very difficult to see them in my view finder far away in bright daylight. I can only point the camera in the general direction and hope I got them. --- In spite of this, many many people enjoy my videos because I also add a little personal touch, not just the flying around in the sky.

@@hawaiigliderman if by “ personal touch “ you mean trying to focus on a kite whilst being thrown about between sky, cloud mountain and then a quick glimpse of kite again , yes , most enjoyable 😏 . Maybe start on just singles before hitting the heavy stuff 🥳

@@JonMcG--- No, by "personal touch", I meant by interacting and talking with my glider friends on the ground, not just shots of the gliders silently flying back and forth above. These are my friends and fellow flyers for many years (USHPA #402) and I filmed it mainly for us to enjoy. You don't have to like it.

How can I hook up with someone who can help me fly Makapu'u? I've been a Hang IV pilot for decades. I once actually went to Oahu with glider; the airline dropped me off in Oahu but kept my glider on the plane, which took off for one of the other islands. I spent my time there mostly snorkeling, but was extremely annoyed by the airline :-(

I usually took my glider on the airliner, but one year a buddy and I went there without them, and the club rented us gliders for $50.00 a day. Good bargain. Even a 70's standard can soar at that wonderful place.

@@donmak0427 Google: Hawaiian Hand Gliding Association. That will get you started. I think membership is $20.00 a year.
