I think Mustaine’s jealousy is insulting to the many musicians whose lives were changed by being able to play with Megadeth and insulting to the millions of fans who were touched by the music Mustaine wrote. His resentment towards Metallica almost makes it feel like he thinks nothing that he did with Megadeth matters, which is crazy because even just from a financial standpoint, Megadeth has outsold every other thrash band besides Metallica themselves. He’s had a financially and creatively successful career with Megadeth, and the fact that even after all of that he still can’t get over what happened with Metallica is sad.

Unforgiveness is an often forgotten killer. I understand Dave's pain with all of this throughout the years always being one step behind Metallica, always feeling lesser and beaten. But I find myself so disappointed in his inability to let this go and just heal. Especially considering his turn to Christianity. As a Christian myself I really thought that he would have learned through his faith to forgive others as God forgave him, but he's so far embittered that he's completely calloused to any change in heart. Not to mention how many instances of hypocrisy have we seen where Dave boots people for the slightest sign of a threatened ego or public image. Like the recent event with Ellefson. Overall If anything I think he's gotten worse about it over the years. I swear he could remove 10 years of lines on his face if the guy just got some therapy and learned to forgive. I used to feel bad for him but now I see that most of the scars he has are really just from him digging in his heels resisting the whole restitution process.

Dave Mustaine has writing credits on Horseman, Jump in the fire, Phantom Lord and Metal Militia from Kill 'Em All. Also he gets some on the album Ride the lightning: on the tile song and Ktulu. I agree that everytime Dave runs his mouth about Metallica it just make him look bad. Dave is also perhaps the most annoying person ever. That being said, the influence Dave had on Metallica (and in Thrash metal as a whole) is huge. He is not just a guy "who played less than 1 year in Metallica". He was maybe the most important figure in the creation of Thrash Metal. Dave Mustaine is a trully guitar genius. And It is not me who is saying it, but Kerry King, Scott Ian, etc. I know Metallica and Megadeth inside out, you can hear Mustaine's DNA in the first 3 Metallica albums. Although he stayed in the Band for less than a year, the riffs and way of writing metal music have set the basis for what would be Thrash Metal and Metallica most kickass songs.

I just read very interesting book by Mark Manson “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life”. Coincidentally he uses examples of Dave Mustaine and Pete Best, both kicked out of the super successful bands of all times, and how they dealt with it. “Dave Mustaine, whether he realized it or not, chose to measure himself by whether he was more successful and popular than Metallica. The experience of getting thrown out of his former band was so painful for him that he adopted “success relative to Metallica” as the metric by which to measure himself and his music career. Despite taking a horrible event in his life and making something positive out of it, as Mustaine did with Megadeth, his choice to hold on to Metallica’s success as his life-defining metric continued to hurt him decades later. Despite all the money and the fans and the accolades, he still considered himself a failure… …Pete Best didn’t have the same redemptive story Dave Mustaine did. He never became a global superstar or made millions of dollars. Yet, in many ways, Best ended up better off than Mustaine. In an interview in 1994, Best said, “I’m happier than I would have been with the Beatles. What the hell? Best explained that the circumstances of his getting kicked out of the Beatles ultimately led him to meet his wife. And then his marriage led him to having children. His values changed. He began to measure his life differently. Fame and glory would have been nice, sure-but he decided that what he already had was more important: a big and loving family, a stable marriage, a simple life. He even still got to play drums, touring Europe and recording albums well into the 2000s. So what was really lost? Just a lot of attention and adulation, whereas what was gained meant so much more to him. These stories suggest that some values and metrics are better than others. Some lead to good problems that are easily and regularly solved. Others lead to bad problems that are not easily and regularly solved.”
@piercehubbard4086

That’s an interesting comparison. I only wonder if Pete Best always felt that way or if he felt that way after growing up and seeing his family turn out well, having a happy home. There's an interview with Kirk explaining that he used the first four bars of a Dave solo, then was given the green light to take it from there Hammett style. Zazula backed the story up, because it was what he originally suggested to Kirk.

I love Megadeth but here’s the problem, most of these “stories” come from one person, Dave. He’s not exactly a trustworthy source for most things. Meanwhile, Metallica doesn’t spend really any time thinking about Dave and why should they? Dave was in the band like a year and a half or so before Metallica ever released their first album. Everyone knows Dave contributed to early music of Metallica and no one claims he didn’t. It wasn’t working out, even Dave’s friends say he is a pain to work with or be around, Metallica kicked him out of the band, Dave is a child who can’t get over it 40+ years later. And Metallica blew up to unbelievable proportions with music (black album and on) that was a completely different style to Dave. So, this jealousy is really sad.

I think this whole situation boils down to one thing: Metallica only used daves riffs on KEA and RTL, and maybe some on MOP But think about all the music Metallica has released since then Justice, Black Album, Load, Reload... Point being that Metallica has been succesfull even in their own right. Sure they might have used some of Daves material for their early popular stuff as a small boost of popularity, but after RTL (depending on how you look at it), its all James, Lars, Kirk and Cliff/Jason

This is how I see it: Lars and James started the band, and Lars especially had a vision. They work together well and are obviously very competent in leading the band. Mustaine is also a leader, but in a very different way. He just wants to be on top. My conjecture is that James and Lars recognized that their vision was trying to be steered and controlled by Mustaine, and while he came in early with songs like Mechanix and Jump in the Fire, I suspect that once James and Lars had songs like Whiplash and Seek and Destroy, they realized they could move forward with their vision without the complications of Mustaine trying to dominate everything. Since Mustaine, Metallica has never fired anyone else, and only one person has quit. Obviously Cliffs death doesn't count in this because it was an accident. How many members have been through Megadeth? James and Lars made the right call, in preserving the longevity and unity of Metallica's career. It would have happened eventually. Edit: I would also add that, if Mustaine had somehow kept the name and kicked Lars and/or James out, I believe that version of Metallica would have even less of a career than Megadeth. Dave doesn't have the best voice/style, and they probably would have rotated singers just like Dave has gone through the other members, and imagine trying to relate to a band that changes the singer every album. Lars and James would probably start a new band, and maybe not have the headstart anymore, but they certainly had the songs and determination.

I always liked 'em both. Metallica was my favourite of the two (despite the cock ups over the years). Although as much as I always knew Megadeth was awesome, over the years as things have changed I gained a new respect for just how professional they became as Dave Sobered up in particular. So there was a point there where Metallica were gradually falling to bits in a lot of ways and Megadeth just sounded even more slick as time went by. Dave always worked with amazing musicians though and he's pretty kick ass himself. Metallica is a different beast. Yeah James is a riff machine and a fantastic vocalist even when he under performs but the band itself is certainly not predicated on the musicians involved being top tier players. They're basically self taught and everything rides on gut instinct a lot of times. Sometimes that's been the reason things haven't gone that smoothly for them but it's also been a key magic ingredient that put them on top of the heap. I kinda like Metallica for being changeable in some sense and Megadeth for being constant and unyielding. A bit like Slayer in some senses although they did show some level of "flexibility" or "range" if you like through the 90s. They quickly realised that didn't work for them like it kinda did for Metallica. It's a strange one. Being a fan of Metallica means you never quite know what you're gonna get. Some bands careers would have simply stopped for trying to pull that kind of thing but then, they earned themselves the monstrous success that gave them the freedom to do that I guess and that has to be respected I guess. Megadeth strike me as a band that has the musical depth to do far more than they do creatively but they choose not to. That's probably a commercially sound decision but I'm not sure that it's a commercially driven decision and I respect them for that as well. They're both legendary and both required learning in my books. So I certainly can't pick sides.

Like let the drama die already. Metallica did the smartest thing by not engaging with his crap anymore. They eventually started to mature and see that Dave lets his true colors shine all by himself. They have even very graciously shared a stage with him several times when they really didn’t have to . . . and probably shouldn’t have for all the dust and crap he always kicks into their faces after they long stopped engaging with his nonsense. Someone needs to send Mustaine a shrink for his b-day. It’s rather sad. Acting this way into his 60’s just doesn’t bode well for Megadeath and their music. I'm a fan a both bands, bigger fan of Metallica, but the reality is Dave has been the one who has been using Metallica as a way to fuel his anger but also resentment and that trickles down to the fan base.
