Dave Ramsey's advice is for chronic and habitual debtors-to force them to acquire monetary discipline first..Once you have the ground rules and the discipline with your finances. You are able to go solo and adapt to targets and situations. It's like learning a to sing or a musical instrument once you understand the basics--you can go forth and become and become a rock star. The truth is nothing holds us back more than debt servicing.

I was watching Ludwig’s Financial channel and he used the term, Dave Ramsey-ish. I think that’s where most people are with those baby steps. I do agree that $1K will not keep you afloat long term but just saving that when you have nothing is an accomplishment. It helped me out a bunch of times. As far as stopping the 401K/403B and not fund your 3-6 months until after debt, is not realistic. Last year taught me that I will definitely have my 3-6 month build in progress along with paying off debt. It’s gonna take me about 3 more years to become debt free.

Re: Mortgage term. Pay every four weeks rather than monthly. Apply that thirteenth payment to “principle only” and you’ve just turned a 30- yr. mortgage into a 15-yr. mortgage. The $1000 is still effective as an emergency fund- he speaks about a separate fund that has 3 to 6 months of monthly expenses saved up in it. But step 1 is to save $1000. Think about it- most times that people ask to borrow money it’s less than $1000. That amount is enough to take care of most little things and to keep someone from taking out a payday loan, subpar loan, title loan, etc.
@citygurl0105

@@wizardofahhhhhhz yes. But he reccomends doing that AFTER paying off ALL consumer debt, remember? That could be a pretty long time for some... If a major component of your car went out, it could cost well over $1k... Speaking from experience

Only because you asked. ;) I’d be hella proud, but I’d take it down a notch. The simple reason is that your invested assets - which is where the real action is - are modest relative to your overall net worth. Straightup millionaires shouldn’t have to sell their houses in order to be able to show they actually have a million. I’m not hating. I’m well over a million but a good chunk of it is in my house. I’ll start celebrating when I can plop a million down, while still living in my house. :) Again, not hating. You asked, and this is just how I process my own evaluation of my true financial situation.

Don't stress out because you stopped your 401k contributions. The fact that we're both going to be 401k millionaires is going to bite us in the butt with taxes. Had I put all of my investments into taxable stocks, not only could I have been getting a minimum 40 percent return, but in retirement I would only be taxed a long-term capital gain of 15 percent instead of 35% with the 401k, which is the tax bracket I'll likely be in.

DR is directed at the lowest common denominator, which is people who are BROKE BROKE, which WAS me and @Rochelle at that time. The reason he says 20% down on a house is to avoid PMI, which can add hundreds to your payment. The stop 401k contributions is actually his WORST piece of "advice", keep them going at least up to employer match! It's FREE MONEY! The one thing you maybe should have followed is never withdraw from a 401k unless it is too avoid a bankruptcy or foreclosure. I need to catch up on your channel, I haven't heard/seen the latest about the non-paying renter!
