I'm 77 and used to be huge Islanders fan (Devils now). I hated Flyers and especially Shultz and all he represented. Unskilled (didn't know his junior and EHL skill set) and goon mentality. So good to hear this interview, what he's been through and really what a solid good MAN he has become. Happy for him. Though maybe sadly still miss the old NHL and the passions it created.

It surprises me that so many people have this same stance on Schultz. He was a 20 goal scorer in the NHL. He wasn't unskilled. He was a LITTLE unhinged on the ice, and he wasn't afraid to fight like most 'goons' were. People don't talk about Mick Vukota that way, and he WAS an unskilled goon. I think people should pay more attention to things OTHER than what they hear and see, and do their own research. Same problem in politics... Republicans listen to other Republicans, Democrats listen to other Democrats, and there's no REAL conversation or personal research.

Excellent interview, I so remember those “Broad Street Bullies” days. My father took me to the 1st Stanley Cup Parade because I had become such a ravenous Flyers fan after spending 5 months in Abington Hospital and a hospital bed after a bad car accident. Dr. John Wolf was my orthopedic Surgeon and the Flyers Team Doctor and I got through all my medical stuff by watching and reading everything Flyer’s. I was using a walker at the time and my Dad would NOT let me miss that celebration. One of my life’s great memories was the excitement of leaning on my walker standing on Chestnut Street as the Flyers “slowly” cruised by. I couldn’t wait until the next year’s Stanley Cup Parade, which was a lot more organized, as the team moved up a VERY crowded Broad Street. You were my hero then and are now my hero again. Congratulations on your sobriety, I wish I had your courage. Just turned 72 and this video hopefully will motivate me to take the giant step. Thank you.

In early February of 1975 he was kicked out of a Ranger vs Flyers game after doing nothing with John Bednarski and later Ted Irvine. It was the game when Bert Wilson bloodied Ted Harris badly! In the press box as Wilson destroyed Harris, Bill Chadwick was whooping it up and next door was Schultz having dressed after his ejection. On the air on WOR Channel 9 we all heard Schultz and Chadwick going at it verbally. Chadwick the HOF referee and Schultz the guy Scotty Bowman had no use for sending his ass to Rochester! Amazing how Bowman had no use for Probert and Schultz but lots of use for Joey Kocur on the great Grind Line as they won 2 Cups! Dave Schultz caveman act ruined hockey! He didn't just fight and go to the box. He went on and on for 10 minutes acting like an idiot bringing bad media to the sport! Dave Schultz hurt hockey with his selfish act!

Selective amnesia, Mr Schultz. Review the tape of the “ fight “ you had with Dale Rolfe. A good player but not a fighter. You picked a fight with him for no discernible reason and beat a non fighter to a bloody pulp. You were a bully- and a very willing combatant- and more often than not- the instigator. As you said in this interview “ I wanted to fight the smaller guys, but O’Reilly kept jumping in.” Philly had real talent but you can never beat the widespread perception that the team won primarily by bullying and fighting more skilled teams. As you aged perhaps you developed a guilty conscience of some limited sort, but every fan back then believed you loved bullying and beating down others. Tell the whole truth, dude.
