The group was very far ahead of their time. It is really sad that the whole world never got hear this song. Barbara Gaskin had a super voice and she had the ability to create her own style of music by using a touch of the past.

I heard this song one on the radio, played by Victor Lewis Smith on BBC Radio 1, for whom Stewart and Gaskin performed a number of songs. It hit me hard and stayed with me for decades until I found it again on KZitem.

Rich Johnston. The song is very emotional. It hit me hard as well. It was meant to be like this because of Joe Meeks death. Joe Meek produced "Telstar." by "The Tornado's." in 1962. Which was written and Produced by Joe Meek. It was one of the first instrumental's by a British rock group to make #1 on The Hot 100. The record also spent 5 weeks being #1 on the U.K. charts in 1962 and it sold 5 million copies worldwide. As far as "The Ventures." go. All they did was put out their own version which was the exact same song which did become a hit in 1963 but, "The Ventures." did not make "Telstar." a huge hit in 1963. "The Tornadoes." came out with it first in 1962. "The Tornadoes." got the glory for making it a hit. "The Ventures." simply redid the same version which was very good in 1963. I have been a record collector for 46 years now and still live in Florida.

@@gecila1 I'm hearing this now for the first time since my landlady threw out my Victor Lewis-Smith tapes in 1998. It makes me cry hearing it again because it reminds me of the effect it had on me at the time and also of the hopes I had for the future that never materialised and got thrown away like those tapes (which went along with many tapes of my own compositions).

Talent is so hard to com by these days. Barbara Gaskin and Dave Stewart had loads of it and I've never forgotten them. I thank them for their talent, good taste and beautiful melodies.

This is such a haunting song. I bought "Telstar" as a 7-year-old and have always been fascinated by Joe Meek's work. A very sad story, but told in a very dignified way by Barbara and Dave.

Yes Joe Meek was a record producer & songwriter from the early 60's. He finally produced a hit by producing Telstar by "The Tornadoes" in 1962. This is what she is singing about. He lost his lucky star when he fell into a depression in Feb 3rd of 1967 and finally killed his landlady and then himself. The song is excellent but the story is very sad.

No shit Sherlock, the song is a tribute to Joe Meek, hence the theme of one of his hits, Telstar.
