Love when Weckl, Peart, Portnoy and Bozzio did the Sabian Players Spotlight vid. Weckl played his piece on the kit and Bozzio says "It's hard to think about the cymbals because you play so beautifully" and Peart says "Thanks for the lesson." You know you're great when those cats call it in.

Dave’s technique is the best of any drummer I’ve ever seen. I guarantee he is the most technically advanced drummer you’ve ever seen, of course, without disregard to Buddy. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dave, and I will say that for the rest of my life, I will always have a special spot for him in my heart.

What is with people bashing the drummers on this incredible work? These guys were paying tribute to one of the finest drummers to ever walk the earth. Obviously they are not Buddy Rich! However, I'd challenge any of the nay sayers here to publish a video that compares or trumps the playing on this video or any other from the series. Good on Neil and the other drummers who took the time to put this together, and mad props to Dave for swinging a tasty and difficult tune.

I was never a big fan of Weckl's until he started experimenting with Latin/fusion music and for me at least, it all came together for him. I always thought he was way too stiff until that point. All technique and no feel. Now, he is just such a complete player and one of those players who piss me off mightily because he makes everything look so effortless. Even in this video (1994), I can now appreciate what I couldn't the.

if you REALLY wanna get pissed off chk out Dave's ''drum solo live in Beirut, Lebanon 2015'' (warning: there are 2 particular parts in that solo where it sounds like he's ''applying'' the double bass usage but his legs are not even moving) there is this mix-up rudiments / p-diddles that he does so frickin' fast ... that it's SICK !

the time is on top, super tight band. to say weckl is not swinging or not tight with bassist is laughable. he is extremely fluid, fantastic whip producing tight powerful (but still light) accents on the snare, which make the swing groove funky (reminding of gadd meets tony williams). But besides all this and most important everything so musical, the fills are so tasty and clever, listen to 02:47, i am sure buddy would loive it. simple idea but with a real edge. Perfect musicianship!

This may piss off some people but here goes. First. Dave Weckl is one of my top 5 favorite drummers IN THE WORLD, a phenomenal artist. But, Buddy Rich OWNS big band drumming and I bet even Dave Weckl would agree. The difference is this : Dave plays big band great and I can listen and enjoy it, but then it's over. I can watch Buddy play this stuff 10,000 times and be blown away EVERY SINGLE TIME, mesmerized at how he does it. Buddy OWNS the arena of big band drumming. The big band drummer(s) closest to Buddy, in my opinion, was the late great Louie Bellson and the late great Ed Shaughnessy. These younger guys trying to play Buddy's music only reminds me of how great Buddy was. Thanks for the tribute but there will never be another big band drummer like Buddy Rich. Likewise, I am equally mesmerized by Dave's talent when he's playing HIS style.

Weckl gives this tune a calmer feel than Rich, probably fully intentionally. But I prefer a really aggressive and hyper swing pattern on this one (Greg Bisonette did just that surprisingly well, live). That said, Dave Weckl displays a degree of control at the end (ca 3.00-3.42) that is nothing but impressive.

I love to read comments of people saying Weckl is a “strong “ of a player on this chart. Buddy Rich has a version of this chart on his album “Roar From 74’ “ that is very stylistically similar to Weckl’s version . This is honestly one of the better tributes to Buddy .

It's so funny to read comments from the uninformed. Dave isn't trying to sound like Buddy Rich. Dave is his own man, as was Buddy, and they're two different players, but that doesn't take away from Weckl's amazing performance. And for those criticizing Weckl, how about posting a video of yourself playing along to this song? Yeah, didn't think so.

Let's not forget THE BAND! Buddy always had the hottest Big Band around. Any time you've got Steve Marcus on sax and a group that good you're in for some good music! OH, and Weckl does a REALLY good job here. No, not as good as Buddy did, but Buddy wasn't human, so that's not really a fair comparison. 😆

I've never «understood» jazz. Do they ever play a song the same way twice? I mean, there is no melody, no lyrics, no obvious verse/chorus/bridge, it just sounds like improvisation. Technically insane, but improvisation nonetheless. Any help?
@MrDrummerguy94
3 жыл бұрын
Theres melodies. Theres choruses. The solos are usually whats improvised, and they are rarely played the same way twice, if ever. I started playing drums with jazz charts in HS. That was over 20 years ago. With jazz, like you mentioned, most of it is improvised. As a drummer, id stick to some main parts sounding the same, but the patterns id use to keep time would vary alittle from performance to performance. Its all about feeling the music. It sounds cheesy, but when a soloist would perform, id have a "conversation" with them and mimic parts of their solo on the drums. Jazz is super fun to play because, aside from the main themes and choruses, its all made by the performers.
