The deadly assassin bug creates an unusual disguise for itself - by covering itself in the bodies of its dessicated enemies!
Assassin bugs are nymphs, meaning that they use the remains of their prey insects to camouflage themselves. Some of these species feed on cockroaches or bedbugs and are therefore often bred as a form of pest control.
From Micro Monsters with David Attenborough Season 1 Episode 1, "Conflict": Right beneath our feet is a secret world of disguise and espionage, social networking and courtship, rape and pillage, parenthood and relationships. Sir David Attenborough investigates how macroscopic residents outwit their enemies to survive.
Micro Monsters is a series narrated and hosted by Sir David Attenborough, who takes viewers deep into the world of bugs. Pioneering macroscopic techniques allow Attenborough to explore in unparalleled detail the intricate, sophisticated behaviours of fascinating creatures and the complexity of the environments they build and inhabit, in a world normally hidden from the human eye. Each of the three episodes explore a different aspect of the little-known lives of insects, from the deceptive defensive mechanisms harboured by spiders and scorpions, to the creation of colonies and how social arrangements develop.
