Brilliant idea using your drill press for fretting...can't wait to try it. Thanks

David is one of the coolest, genuinely down-to-earth, good hearted persons I have ever had the privledge to meet. Lives close to where my wife and her family grew up, & are friends with David. I never knew of Dave until I was wanting to build a boat, googling around and found a website (simplicityboats) that Dave made, that my wife came by and said "Oh he's my neighbor." SMALL WORLD when something like that happens. Anyway, thanks David for contributing so much to you community and world.

Really neat! Bought a gourd 2 years ago to build a gourd banjo, but haven't gotten around to it since. I really like the sound of gourd banjos.

I recently started making simple, fretless banjos in the "Appalachian mountain" style as a bit of a hobby as well as whatever other bizarre instrument ideas pop in my head (I recently finished a four string banjo I made out of one of those cheap, goat skin tamborines I bought at a pawn shop. I call it a banjorine). It's extremely fun and seeing stuff like this really makes me want to pursue it further. I would love to be able to make gourd banjos of this quality one day as I absolutely love the sound they produce. It really is like the classical guitar of the banjo world. I love your dulcimers too, but I just have a soft spot in my heart for gourd banjos. Do you still make them? I've been thinking about buying one for quite a while now, I just haven't gotten around to saving up the cash to do so. Keep on keepin' on, man! We need to keep the spirit of these beautiful instruments alive!

Wonderful! I make these instruments here in India. How do fit that little rod inside the neck? I usually use a think bamboo stick for the neck and it takes hell to make a hole of that diameter inside a coconut shell.

I'm making a salad bowl banjo similar to the gourds. My question is how do you connect the dowel to the neck? Or, do you suggest another method?

I tried growing my own but here in FL way too hard to get them to grow thick shells before mold or mildew get them. My favorite are from Wellbourn Gourd Farm in California. Canteen gourds.

do you barnish the gourds on the inside?
@DavidBeede
6 жыл бұрын
No I don't, I leave them raw from the seed scraping. I use a bees wax citrus oil combo on the outside of the gourd called Howard's Feed n Wax. I have tried doing a thinned wash of hide glue on the inside of the skin which seems to slow down humidity exchange and make tuning a bit more stable.

the gourds never get deform by the skin tension? don't you reinforce them??
@DavidBeede
6 жыл бұрын
Not usually. I have put a wash of thinned hide glue on the inside of the skin and the gourd to slow down moisture exchange. I get my gourds from Welburn Farm in California and they are really strong, about a 1.2" thick. Thinner ones I have mounted triangular supports on the the thru rod/stick that comes from the neck. It supports the arc of the gourd right in front of the tail piece which prevents the "pucker" or wrinkle that can develop between the tail piece and the bridge. The thick gourds don't require that.
