Bowie didn't give himself enough credit for his beautiful voice. I've seen several interviews where he says he isn't a good singer, never had been. I wish I could tell him I beg to differ. I love hearing him sing!

I spent my youth listening to him alone in the basement. Imagining what I would tell him IF I ever got the chance... THEN walking to see the Elephant man which he started in. Opened in Chicago. I'm walking as a young adult and crossing the street a limo turns with us walking. The thing dies and when the driver tried to start it it wouldn't turn over. As SOON as it didn't start the rear door pops open and he walks out crossing the street JUST ahead of me!!!! I turn to my THEN wife and say that's Bowie. NO THATS AN IMITATOR. Idiots! I walk to intercept him and just as I'm ready to say Mr. Jones.... she SCREAMS, DAVID BOWIE!!!!! He turns and runs and there I am. 10 feet away.... gone! Ran to the theater and I am not chasing...... I'll NEVER forget that. God rest her soul.....

The studio version is by far better. The piano score by Rick Wakemen and Bowie could hit those high notes so well when he was younger. With this version he has to adjust what he just can't hit anymore. Not an insult. It's just what happens as a singer gets older. To me this version sounds like it's from a Broadway play or something.

I think at the core of all his talents, he was an actor - and they say the best singers are also good actors. So when he was performing live, he was interpreting the song in the moment and I think for that reason the live recordings have a real passion in them, real emotion...

This song is such sweet sorrow. The line that really gets me is the one referring to the "lawman beating up the wrong guy." They are always beating up the wrong guy, beating up the queers or the freaks or the artistic or the blacks or the Jews instead of the super rich war mongers who maim and murder millions. And Bowie also asks "wonder if he'll ever know." But of course they never learn. "look at those cavemen go."

Oh, my.. David, you've really come to this world from better skies. Please, live forever. Breathtaking performance, so much heartfelt.

Sempre!

I don't care if you never heard Bowie before American horror story. you are lucky enough to know him now. Check out MUCH more of his work. He is an absolutely unbelievable genius.

This is how I want my Bowie to look - dog rough. I can barely watch him on here nowadays because it upsets me so much. At least I got to see him live twice. Love you David xxx
