Essentially, David Bowie wanted a spiritual and moral system that didn't have to rely on dogma. Bowie HATED institutions but he also understood that Nietzschean/Crowlean anarchy is ultimately self destructive. Bowie wanted a paradigm where you are allowed artistic freedom (becoming) but it is all affirmed or accepted by bigger forces at work in nature (being). In Gnosticism, there's a God BEYOND the Biblical God: this God has no male or female characteristics & is beyond physical observation, but the idea is that everything that's beautiful or good in life comes from this Godhead, and that the goal is to reunite with this more powerful God through a good (active) life.

Why do you think it's exclusive? Anyone can just buy a book and start to study. It's the mystical path rather than the dogmatic one (so you can't just join a club of prescribed beliefs, ie as in a religion )gnosticism is not a belief system really at all, more of a system of enquirey. Gnosticism is available to anyone, if they decide to to look, its the path of a true seeker, which Bowie clearly was. I became interested in it when I was very young because religious explanations were so unsatisfactory to me, I joined a study group, bought books,, started meditating, nothing about this was 'exclusive' it was just a decision I made. Besides this, BTW why would it be 'weird' that Bowie talks about this, he's just the sort of person who would, because he is a thinker and all his life was on a search for meaning and identity and truth.
@theswan1852

@@SarahSmith-nr2wj The 1st century gnostic christians were. an. exclusive. club. That's why I think it's exclusive. In the 1st century you could not just go buy a book. It has secret codes that you had to understand to get into heaven. Much like the masons, or Flinstone's water buffalo club, you had to know the secret handshake. "Gnostic" means knowledge, as in "secret knowledge," things you had to know to get into heaven. The mystery cults of the first century (mythros, dionysus etc.) were just that - a mystery, not available to just anybody. It is "weird" that Bowie would talk about this because it is a 2000 year old, very obscure, secretive, religion.
@SarahSmith-nr2wj

@@theswan18521. we're not in the first century anymore and secondly, I think you misunderstand the times in which these groups were set up. The inquisition committed genocide on gnostic groups such as the cathar, furthermore the consciousness of the whole world was different than it is now , and keeping a sacred and secret seal on these teachings was necessary on many levels. For example, it was necessary to remain integrity, and as part of the right of passage for an initiate. Not all people are ready or even want such teachings, even nowadays whereas in earlier times there were very tribal factions to society and many reasons for keeping sacred initiate trainings separate. Thankfully times have changed.

@@VVeltanschauung187 - This is complete nonsense. Literally, nothing you wrote is correct. When Europe was ruled by Christianity it was called the dark ages. A time of oppression and ignorance and early death. It was when we broke from the Church that we created the age of reason and with it the modern world. The scientific method has allowed us to developed cures for many diseases, extending life and has also led to the creation of every modern invention. Literally, everything you wrote is nonsense: 1. "Science came out of poetry" - no it didn't. 2. Science can "explain how things work with science but not what they are." That doesn't even make any sense but science explains exactly what things are. That's its job. 3. "Any form of science based only upon physical-material characteristics and then only selected external traits, led to epistemic impoverishment, devoid of moral values, and a reduction of human knowledge." This isn't true. When was there a time that knowledge was reduced due to people following the scientific method instead of religion? It's just more nonsense. 4. "The discovery of the consciousness, a world of an inner mind, coincided with the advent of Platonism and Jesus Christ." Wrong, Plato lived 400 year before Jesus and they are not connected in any way. Plato was a philosopher in ancient Greece and Jesus had a small religious cult and Jerusalem. 5. "Turn the other cheek when slapped" is a powerful message talking about the cyclical nature of violence. Christianity was spread by the sword. The Romans slaughtered to Druids down to the least man. The history of Christianity is one of torture -e.g. the Spanish inquisition, war, oppression, burning "witches", genocide, slavery, injustice, fanaticism, racism, homophobia and holding back science and medicine by centuries. 6. "The basis of all moral systems is compassion, not on practicality." Modern systems of justice are not religious-based and we are quite capable of creating moral systems without belief in ancient myths. There is no connection whatsoever between morality and moral systems and your religious beliefs. In fact the god of the Bible supports slavery and murdering children. The god of the Bible says to kill gays, modern humans decided that was immoral all on our own. Proving your last point to be nonsense just like the rest. Fancy that.

@@AnyoneCanSee Evil men use religion for political purposes, and these are the pragmatists. Real ethical action exists in compassion which is unmeasurable, unquantifiable, and arguably spiritual. Love is "just" chemicals in your brain, until it isn't - until it's transcendental that things take a different turn. It was excusable to be a nominalist (the believer of psychological archetypes existing in our brain, and not outside of ourselves) centuries ago maybe, but not now. Now, it is a sign of mathematical illiteracy. The developments in complex analysis and fractal geometry leaves no doubt that Platonism is correct You would also have to thank Christianity for your staunch atheism yet ethical background. Understanding religion as a form of beliefs that one might reject back to a state of neutral atheism, or choose another arbitrary set of beliefs, is a very Christian-hegemonic approach formed from historical evolution. I am by no means a supporter of priesthood, or of any sort of Crusade but I do believe in the importance of spirituality and its role in life.
