3:32 Victory !!! One of the most powerful and energertical phrasing I've ever heard. Unbelievable. Only Barere in his fury, Horowitz not able to do that.

More powerful louder than Barere=Mikhail Pletnev(Prokofiev piano concerto no 1 by Pletnev!) The Second Loudest ever was Lazar Berman! The 3rd Loudest was Erwin Nyiregyhazi!

2:16 MY FAVORITE MOMENT !! This moment of fantastic revolt upon all mediocrity ..... and the defeated face of the old frustrated witch on the left side ... so delicious ... all the sheer beauty she never get in her stupid life ... and David Dubal, extatic ... Who are DavidDubal's companions at the table? Presumably they are pianists.

“Barere didn’t know in which tonality he was playing” is the most inaccurate statement I’ve heard! He studied at the St Petersburg conservatory under Felix Blumenfeld, who said Barere was his best pupil (and he had Horowitz and Yudina as pupils too!). Plus he didn’t have a heart attack, but a brain emorragia whilst playing Grieg’s concerto.

As much as it pains me, I must concur with David Doucheball on this. Barere is one of the dumbest musicians I've ever heard. It hits the ear that he never EVER wasted a single thought on what he was actually playing. Technically, he's a hit or miss, the misses being far more frequent than the hits. Which the present excerpt of the Spanish Rapsody clearly exemplifies: it's unpolished and often downright messy. No comparison with Gilels' volcanic, hair raising live recording.

@@pianoredux7516 Well, andream states that it is inaccurate to say that Barere didn't know in which tonality he was playing. To which I reply that Barere most certainly didn't know what a tonality is. 😁

Joke apart there's certain recordings of his I actually do fancy. Barere's Scriabin etude for the left hand has a lot of flair, for example. And certain salon virtuoso pieces sparkle under his gifted fingers. Wouldn't want to hear him with Schubert or Brahms though...

@Pogouldangeliwitz My dear sir, you have no factual documented basis whatsoever for making such a reckless and cavalier assumption. Prove it. Otherwise desist from pushing a canard.

If that is Yuja Wang I would understand why she is not listening with rapt attention. She has to listen to somebody who obviously isn't a pianist giving condescending remarks on a great pianist, pretty much saying all he could do was play fast. Yuja can play at least as fast as Barere (no contest in the octaves department), but I know who I would rather hear playing the Liszt sonata or the Chopin C# minor scherzo.
