i've just finished david's book about 1971 and i must admit it was magnificent, i read it in about 3 days and it totally absorbed me, so well written with so much passion and knowledge, also the conclusions he draws are spot on, i would often put it down during the read and reflect on some of the points he makes and find myself completely agreeing with him as i mused on whatever it might be, his piece about elvis presley in 71 and how the king was being packaged and sold being a precursor to how things would be today is absolutely correct, as i read that i found myself thinking this is the way punk rock has ended up albeit on a far less grand scale, its also quite amusing in parts as its written in such a readable style as if you were sat in a pub with him discussing matters over a light ale or a coffee, a brilliant book, one of the best i've read!

Many good comps out there but this is exceptionally excellent. Was going to get the vinyl only but opted for the cd set. Great work David! Now please have your publisher rerelase all your books as hardcovers again.

This looks well worth a punt. Greatest decade (by some distance)and I was pleasantly surprised to see you have included the title track from Ellen Foley`s `Night Out`!

Have you, Mark Ellen and Bob Harris ever considered starting a radio station to give this kind of music the proper public airing it deserves..?
@markofsaltburn

If they did have their own station, what would they call it? Blue Boar Radio would be very evocative. Roundhouse Radio? If not their own station, they should at least have their own two/three hour weekly slot on, say, Boom Radio.

Well done. Its a great extension to the books, introduction for some, and like remixing, you are creating a fresh contextual basis for enjoying the music. Like the great complications from the past hopefully it's a 'way in' for many 👍

Good to see Ellen Foley's Night Out getting a mention - one of the underrated albums of the 70s. And the voice? What a belter!

I might buy this because it features the original Small Town Talk, which a favoured guitarist has covered. And i love that song. Simples, as the kids say

Patto: who’s drummer was John Halsey aka Barry Wom of the Rutles ,who also played drums on a couple of tracks from Lou Reeds Transformer albeit that they spelt his name slightly wrong in the credits… You should get John on as a guest sometime , nice guy He was always a little cheesed off that Patto got overlooked in his history in lieu of his Barry Wom character.

@@markofsaltburn At one time we were both landlords in pubs in the Cambridge area and I needed to stock up at the cash n’ carry so after doing my big shop I returned to pay for it all only to find most of the tills were out of action and everyone had to queue up at the one remaining till that was working. The queue was huge as you can imagine. I prepared myself for a hour long wait then noticed who was stood directly behind me in the queue , none other than an equally frustrated Mr .Womble. He seemed quite pleased to be recognised and more than happy to chat and it turned a potentially hot-headed wait into a very pleasurable hour …well for me anyway ! It was at the time when their falling out with Eric Idle had become known to the public and he was happy to let him have both barrels , oh the trials and tribulations of minor celebrity eh?

@@davidheafield1436 Great story. Halsey might have gone into the pub trade, but didn’t his alter ego open a chain of lady’s hairdressers?

Just been through my massive and deep CD Database (been getting them since 1978, 3" singles from Japan), And all of these tracks have appeared on CD at sometime In the past. But to have all of these on one great collection will save you about £4,000plus, that Is even If You could find all of the CD's. I Highly Recommend this collection, grab while You can.

@@markofsaltburn yep, the term New Wave was regularly used by the music press at the time, my guess is that many bands didn’t fit into categories as such and New Wave was the solution imo. I was an active club, pub and roadshow DJ so was really immersed in it all as a DJ, fabulous era so diverse.
