In some way, "2001: A space odyssey" is a type of experience that gives much of the same feel to the experience as Lynch'productions.

I guess, it's not really a surrealist film until the very end though. A lot of it is up to interpretation, much like Lynch films, but in addition to being surrealistic Lynch's films are character focused and quite humorous. 2001 is a film about ideas and not people and it's also very dry and self-serious.

In the use of the colors, especially the red color, I see something of Twin Peaks in Eyes Wide Shut. At the same time, in Fire Walk With Me, there's a scene where Laura Palmer comes back and his father is sat at the table, that always reminds me The Shining

@@pasqualeR85 I just watched the movie Fun (1994) about two girls who murdered an old woman for fun. During the murder scene you hear music similar to Laura Palmer's murder scene in Fire Walk With Me. So I checked the IMDb and it turns out that the murder scene in Fun was inspired by A Clockwork Orange. So maybe Laura Palmer's murder scene was inspired by Kubrick too.

@@tay.joh.6326 Neither is true. Kubrick got the rights around the time Eraserhead was released. but he used WHILE he was filming. He already had a script and several ideas but no doubt - kubrick does improvise a lot - he probably changed key scenes and definitely by editing used "Lynch" bits that were not planned.

Awesome to hear... I love both of these film makers for the same reasons... I can pour over their films for innumerable repeated viewings looking for symbolism or details I might have missed before... it takes several viewings to digest a film from either. And both land in that rarest of rare categories of film makers. The handful where every single thing they did interests me. In my opinion (the only one that matters to me regarding films), neither of these two can do wrong.

Yeah I'm gonna have to go with Barry Lyndon way out in front by a country mile, followed by Eyes Wide Shut. They're just such beautiful, energetic films, and unlike many of his others, they aren't completely dystopic and dysfunctional beyond belief. They deal with charismatic, capable people instead of wildly fucked-up miscreants in dire circumstances, like in Full Metal Jacket or Lolita or Clockwork Orange or The Shining. 2001 on the other hand is so very 60s that it's kind of disturbing, even if it is a masterpiece of sorts. It's not one I can ever really embrace or love. It's kind of icky and repulsive, despite or perhaps because of its extreme sterility. It's sort of too busy making a point and being profound to tie together into a smooth and lively narrative.

Eyes Wide Shut would have been heralded as a genius work if not for Cruise/Kidman sucking the air out of the room as far as what the press focused on. Personally I think he chose them because he thought their stature and dynamic (which was very believable in context) would make the story more effective, not because of any box office concerns. He was right, but naive about how the press and critics would respond.
