"Shadows also climb the stairs. Let me film it" - David lynch

As a kid, Lynch was traumatized by going down the stairs into the subway. He felt like he was going down into "hell" with its wind & peculiar sounds. There it is, probably.

That’s the beauty of Lynch’s films. You don’t have to understand any of it in order to love and experience it. It’s all about how it makes you feel and what the film does to you. He’s my favorite filmmaker and I fucking love him.

He always wanted his paintings to move. Well, the stairs as a static 'canvas' ends up 'moving' by capturing the effect of light, shadow and sound.

If a high school student made this it would be called pretentious, but David Lynch does it and it's a masterwork? Reminds me of the story about the art instructor who had students critique a Jackson Pollock painting only to find it was the teachers stained smock. Until they found that out, the work was a masterpiece

Painters also make quick sketches which are often very simple and crude, but they can sell them for huge amounts of money, because they are known to be good painters, and people who buy these sketches cherish them like treasure. It may not be that technically impressive, just a simple sketch, but the sketch becomes valuable because of the person who produced it. This short movie is kind of like a sketch like this. It's very simplistic but still mysterious and beautiful, and it could be a framework for something bigger Lynch did later.

well as with Lynch this is interpretational, but to me I think it represents seeing all the improvements and greater paths you could make for yourself, but instead doing nothing as time wastes away. You see yourself just stay stagnant as the world moves on.

Read the description. It's an intervalometer experiment. Do you just think Lynch comes up with his idea of cinematography out of nowhere? Sometimes it takes a director more than 10 years to make another great film. You just think it's so easy. Or, by "greater paths" you mean making Hollywood movies?

Maybe Lynch was just trolling us by making a film in which it's just stairs, and seeing what protracted interpretations people come up with. Which is ironically my interpretation.

What are you even talking about? Every modern artist is trolling? What? Maybe you're the troll. You seem like a pretty dumb angry sensitive little person to get so worked up over nothing. Go away.
@AllThreeWitches
8 жыл бұрын
Wow. Nice one. You really showed me. Yeah that's right, too dumb. To cry 'idiot' is indeed the first recourse of an idiot, so congratulations on that. Yet I'm the lazy one, right? Ha. Let's hope that next time you want to express a difference in opinion, you can do so in an intelligent manner that doesn't rely on petty insults. Still mystified as to what your actual problem is. It's a video of fucking stairs. What are you, the arbiter of all that is true modern art? Why don't you come down off that high horse if yours. You're showing yourself up as an ignoramus.
@HappyFuneZone
8 жыл бұрын
The Face of The Alphabet There's nothing petty about calling you an idiot, and "it takes one to know one" is as immature a retort as they come. "It's a video of fucking stairs" is the calling card of a true idiot. It doesn't take an arbiter of jack shit to know that "Its just _____!" is the most pathetic way someone could try to understand art.
@AllThreeWitches
8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. Every moron on the internet who can't properly articulate themselves falls back on the "you're just an idiot" line. So fucking lame. Try harder. Everything about you is petty, you took extreme offence to my frankly vanilla comment about this video, and immediately resorted to silly name calling and accusations. Who made you the decider of artistic meaning? Do you have some insight into this artwork that no one else has? Of course not. And as a matter of fact, yes it really is just stairs. Literally that's what this video is, a time lapse of stairs, you're acting like a pretentious prig. No one who reads this is impressed. Oh wait I forgot, everyone who disagrees with you is clearly an idiot, right? Let us all defer to Happy Fun Zone's epistemological supremacy. Give me a break.
@HappyFuneZone
8 жыл бұрын
The Face of The Alphabet So I either make my argument or call you an idiot? Talk about a false dichotomy, considering I articulated exactly why you were an idiot. I dont need any insight into why your mind-bogglingly elementary understanding of art is the stuff of middle-schoolers. Calling it "just stairs" shows that you have no interest in analyzing it beyond spouting something generic, self-defeating, and pathetic.

We'll, interpretation or not is an unusual background with some pretty shadow and music play, what's wrong in just enjoying that? Also, was this meant to play on loop? The shadow at the end did obscure everything.... As for possible explanation (just for fun)....the end of Macbeth? Oh and the shadow of unknown nature casting fear over the squared human construction (stair as a mean to ascend to higher meaning).....yeah, this will do.

Could be his take on industrialisation as the trees that fall their shadows go upwards. Then, they're replaced by a wall kind of structure hence the final shot being the shadow of trees only seen from behind a shadow of window implying how the concrete jungle has taken over nature. Idk could be something else too.
