@@RichV20 Spade, in my humble opinion, with the exception of a couple times, has never really been funny at all. Eddie Murphy has always been a comic juggernaut that has always been funny. Yes you don't always make great movies every Star make duds. Eddie made a couple in a row or maybe more than that, but he's always been one of the funniest comics and entertainers ever. I would put Eddie up with any other larger-than-life comic out there. Pryor, Williams, Carlin and Eddie. She belongs in the upper echelon of comic geniuses.

I think he felt a little betrayed by them. He was at a very low point in his career and may have even been counting on his SNL connections to help keep him afloat. Not to condone his actions, but I do understand where he's coming from. They didn't make fun of something he did or said, they made fun of his work, saying his career was over. He really is the reason SNL wasn't canceled after Lorne left, so it's only fair to assume they owe him a little more respect than that.

I think David Spade tries too hard sometimes. He can be hilarious if he just loosens up a bit. The best one was when Teri Hatcher dressed up like him and he dressed up like her. Teri was brilliant doing an impression of him. Funny how he's fine with several women doing impressions of him (Amy Poehler was his "stunt double" in a sketch). True comedians can take a joke.

While true that it seems Eddie was butthurt and doesn't seem able to take a joke, people who say Eddie stopped being funny in the 80s can't be more wrong. I can't recall when exactly, but Eddie was asked about why no more stand-ups and stuff like that. His reply to this question was that he wanted to make more family-oriented movies for the sake of his own children. He didn't want his kids to see their daddy taking about dicks, pussies, etc. If you ask me, I think that is commendable.Eddie Murphy is without a doubt one of the funniest and definitely the most successful comedian of my generation and probably in the history of entertainment. Sadly, he seems to be unable or unwilling to be the center of a joke. The falling star joke was funny. It seems he had forgotten how much he used to joke about "Mr. Cosby" and how much Bill Cosby hated Eddie joking about him. It never stopped him (until recently oddly enough).

I think part of why Murphy took it so badly was because it probably felt personal. Making fun of celebrities you have no ties to is one thing, but SNL usually doesn't rag on past members, and often if I ever see an old SNL alum in anything it's with someone else from SNL who's having a better time with their career. So, you have Eddie Murphy who practically singlehandedly kept SNL on the air, and while it can sound like hyperbole, it's true. That season wasn't the usual "SNL used to be good, what happened", Lorne left the show, producers wanted to cancel it, and the only cast member consistently getting laughs and keeping the ratings up was Eddie Murphy. So, after that and you hit a slump like almost every single SNL alum does at some point and you just get put down even more by something you devoted a huge amount of time to. And really I can't even think of another time SNL made fun of an Alum.

Eddie Murphy did keep SNL going through some rough times (I loved his Gumby skits and his Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood skits.) Still, it was a joke. And EM would have the last laugh if he didn't make movies like Pluto Nash. Yecch.

To me it seems like Spade was pointing out a basic reality of Eddie Murphy’s trajectory in the 90s after endless bad movies and cheap cash ins.

Norm MacDonald said it best, and I'm paraphrasing: There's an unwritten rule when you're on SNL and you leave the show, whether in good terms or in bad, there are no jokes at the person's expense. Period. When Chevy Chase decided to leave after Year One because he literally thought he was better than SNL, once he left, no jokes. Joe Piscopo left to pursue a movie career, which tanked worse than Eddie's, then he turned all Stretch Armstrong...no jokes. Spade crossed a line and he knew he crossed a line, because he wouldn't take the call initially. Now...for context, let's turn the Wayback Machine back to September 1980. SNL has been on for five years and the last four original Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time Players (Jane, Laraine, Garrett, and Gilda) along with Bill Murray (who replaced Chevy) have left the show. Dan and John left the season before for the big screen. It's a completely new cast at the start of season six, and the reception for the new cast was not at all positive. The ratings tanked and it was in danger of being cancelled after the first month. But, then, you had this one guy--an unknown--who was doing some brilliant stuff. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood...James Brown in the hot tub...Gumby...Tyrone Green, the prison poet. Before Eddie, SNL never featured solo sketches. By the time we get to the end of season seven, SNL is getting higher ratings than they were getting with the original cast. When Eddie Murphy says that he saved SNL singlehandedly, he absolutely did. That's why Spade got his ass chewed out. Eddie did his celebrity impressions, but none of them were personal attacks. Showing Eddie's picture while saying, "Look, children, it's a falling star" is personal.

Show biz IS and always will be "what have you done for me lately". And if you arent relevent in that time frame, be thankful you even get mentioned. I dont care what celebs are doing at this exact moment. Im sure they dont care what im doing. I think Spade was fine. Eddie cracked on lots of big name stars. They are comedians, its what they do. No reason to feud.

I love how obvious Howard is. He is one of the most racist people on radio but it's cool because his black friends giggle after his klans-men best nigga impression. Every time he mimicked Eddie's voice his cohost rebuked herself. "No Jesus no, allow me to make this money with satan. I'll prey when i get home." .... Howard doesn't need a laugh track; he has at least 5 gainfully employed black people working closely with him at all times.

Your *second mistake*: claiming "nobody gives a shit" when you took time to read the comment and post a response. Your *third mistake*: posing a rhetorical question as an attempt to sway opinion. Your *redeeming quality*: that profile photo. Your *moment of truth*: what you do next after getting offline and going outside. And yes: this is a dick move.

Has any SNL show made fun of any other SNL alumni? Have there been jokes on show about Belushi? Don’t think so. Phil Hartman jokes? Gilda Radner? Chris Rock jokes? Yes it doesn’t seem like much to get upset about but I’m pretty sure no other alumni has been made fun of on the show. So Eddie took it personally. Understandable.

He DID keep the show around, back in the early-mid 80s! It was in serious danger of getting canceled, until a very young Eddie Murphy showed up. Imagine everything that SNL has done in the past 30 years not happening because the show went down the drain, back then! I think his reaction to that joke was a bit strong, though.

At the time, Eddie Murphy was one of the most successful cast members to ever come off that show and David Spade was a nobody who did very little on the show except for spots on weekend update. This came out soon after a movie he did wasn't doing well. It wasn't a cool thing to do.
