Imagine every single working man and woman in England, having this gentleman's articulate intellect, and education ?. David Starkey is a right wing historian. He is also rude and outspoken. And in many cases he is absolutely bang on......

+John Howard well said,"What a hugely articulate intellect." Yes. I keep trying to find reasons to dislike Starkey. That fails me. As historians go Hew Strachan is probably our best living academic historian. Starkey is, well, rather grand in a slightly affected way. But there is no affectation here. Starkey finds his feet and delivers a perfectly excellent dinner address... and actually has important things to say. He talks about Barts surviving Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and almost says but leaves it to us that such an outstanding building also survived Labour c.1948 and Liberals c.1960; I can attest, as it happens that I work and teach at the affiliated institution, having worked all over the world and lived just long enough to notice... this old hall is both bricks and metaphor. The bricks are what Jose Ortega y Gasset would have termed "Individual, qualified, and select." And metaphor, it survives being simply worthy and nothing more, through those awful, mind numbing ideas that educated people are all toffs, that anyone who walks into responsibility because they can is a donkey shagging lions, and if all of the few tall trees are cut down things will be better in the forest. One can only hope that Britons will continue to find it in themselves to let great places like this continue for later generations. More, one prays that those attitudes that embrace failure and even make it institutional are beginning to fall away. Starkey can be grand without having earned it, and he can be a bit noxious, but in his ideas he is as in an Edwardian phrase used by Churchill in a memorial to Chamberlain, "an English Worthy."

+Hugo DBPHuguenot Thank you for comments Your hope that Britain will continue to maintain these great institutions because they are part of what we are is also my hope as well. . Yes Starkey can be obnoxious but I actually admire that when everyone else is in agreement over things he is not afraid to go against the tide and say that what is quite often unpalatable to their tastes. We need the Starkey's of this world more than ever. You may not agree or like him but he offers the alternative to the PC'ers

***** Oh I fear my curmudgeonly attitude ruined my note. All things considered I rather like the man, agree with him on most things, and appreciate both his intellect and talent. I met him not long ago at a dinner. I expected he would have me on about my Oxf youth at Balliol and All Souls (read medicine at Yale in America). He was quite gracious. In my own field, trauma surgery, I've come to dislike and distrust physicians who enter as "the great man," and I really am touchy when I feel introduced as such or when treated as a "toff," which I am not. Running a big programme there are times when I have to be a right bastard, but in truth I hate it. Finally, I am friendly with a fellow from my Hong Kong days whom the public are often told is a "grandee," Lord Patten. I can assure you that "in his socks" Chris is a deeply thoughtful, introspective man. No, I think Starkey is great, just perhaps not as great as he thinks of himself (big grin)!!

Three people of very different styles and all worth studying if you are to do any public speaking: David Starkey, Winston Churchill, Nigel Farage.
