Electric Piano, Clavinet, Programming, Synthesizers: David Wojciechowski
Drums, Synthesizers, Guitar, Bass: Victor Fritzsche
1st of June, 1980.
Television Island is a song by David Wojciechowski and Victor Fritzsche. He recalls David coming home in the morning with a black, wooden box thing with orange buttons in hands.
-Olá, olá! - Said David holding the new object.
-David, what is that? - Asked Victor.
-Oh, it’s a…LinnDrum. I mean, drum machine!
David had a tendency to buy music gear before knowing what it actually did. He was one of the few people who bought a TB-303 around its release in 1982, and God knows he uses every tool he gets in one way, shape or form, including the manual.
-How much did it cost? - Asked Victor.
-Mhm. It’s sample based too. - David replied.
He starts fiddling around with the sounds and programs a short pattern.
-But David, - Victor interrupts - We already have drums.
-Victor, I can reassure you, this isn’t to replace you - He smiles - It’s your newest friend! See, now I can play the drums too.
David hits random buttons, drawing a smile on Fritzsche’s face.
They both laugh.
Television Island is one of the first songs by the duo to use the iconic LinnDrum. This song in particular uses it as a complement to live drums, played by Victor. The LinnDrum would be used by David for a long time. In fact, David still owns his drum machine and uses it to this day. He says it’s a great way of coming up with new ideas due to its flexibility and programmability (you can pitch bend everything!). Something David loves doing is sequencing things.
The photo shows Victor sitting on a green chair next to an orange Zenith portable Television from the 70s. Photo taken by Jackal Golden in 1980. It was hot that day but David still ordered a hot mocha for both and spilled it on his buddy.
