ProRes Raw is currently my favorite codec to work with in Resolve. Resolves color management really brings to life the power of modern sensors. It's totally worth having to convert the files, and it was certainly worth buying a mac! Hope this workflow helps you guys get the most out of your files!

Sid you are the bomb bro. This is definitely game changer for the ProRes RAW peeps. Im a beginning colorist student, and I have the same cam (Z Cam F6) and was looking at work arounds for the ZRAW and I bumped into a your vid for the conversion on another site. The Z RAW conversion in time may get better with time and the issue of firware this and that...😢 i would much rather record RAW externally for the moment with ProRes and follow this workflow you have mapped out so plainly. Thank you for the vid and the insight. A quick question, though: why did you decide to use the Atomos for ProRes RAW instead of the BM Video Assist for BRAW?

Ok, The video was awesome, but the close earned my sub ... That said, I am a color dufus ... I just don't get it. From How to set up my Sony camera (and Ninja V+) to get a good image (I know RAW gives me the most room, but I typically film in 422 LT so I can film as much as possible) ... To how to actual color grade my footage once I have everything ready ... including how to apply my color grades to each of my cuts efficiently. I have a lot to learn to get my videos to look as good as yours my man ... But my journey starts now.

Same workflow, however, in the color tab, you can select the input color space for your non raw files. In the top right you'll see clips, Timeline, etc. You'll make sure clips is selected, and you can right click on the thumbnail of the clip and select the input color space in the input color space menu. Same for ACES. Except for aces it's called Input Device Transform.

Great to see, thanks Sidney. Do you notice much difference in what you can achieve colour-wise between colour managed and ACES workflows with CDNG, or is the end result basically the same once you get used to the workflows? I've been using a custom colour managed workflow for ZLog2 (S Gamut3 cine to ARRI LogC) with ProRes 422 files as I really like the colours I can get using this method. Curious... this may just be enough to push me to get a Ninja 😉

ACES is simply a form of color management. ACES's real strength comes form the fact that you can manage color from multiple platforms instead of just resolve.

Hi Sidney, follow your videos. Am a new indie filmmaker. Whenever I try to set the RAW settings in Davinci Resolve and select Cinema DNG, it always reverts to ARRI. Doesn't seem to impact anything but the Cinema DNG setting just doesn't take. Is that a worry? (My workflow is Sony FX30 shooting in ProRes RAW, using Assimilator app to convert to Cinema DNG, import to Davinci Resolve and edit.)

@@sidneybakergreen Thank you SBG! I believe you just made me aware of something I wasn't previously aware of! Great video! I have the FX3 and I'm filmming Prores RAW on my Ninja V and XAVCS-I internaly. When I import both clips to resolve they seem different. The cinema DNG clip has more contrast than the original from sony. I use the Phantom Luts to convert s-log to rec.709, so when I apply them to the cinema dng file the footage looks bad... Do you know any solution? 😀
@sidneybakergreen
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, don’t use the luts. Use the workflow I posted. It looks bad because of an improper conversion.. And they should be different, one is raw and one is not.
@sidneybakergreen
2 жыл бұрын
Take a step back and think about your workflow. You camera raw tab say that your color space and gamma is being debayered to BMD Film. Is that Slog? If the input isn’t correct why would the lut work? Also, if you’re using color management, which you should instead of a lut, this should be a non issue. There are some things that aren’t as pragmatic, color management is not one of them.
