That was my first big challenge, when i started riding bikes last year. winter solstice - 7:17 - 160k (never ridden so far before), Baltic Sea to North Sea and back. And just to spice things up on the first half a 35kph / 22 mph headwind and all planed coffee stops where closed that day. A ride i will never forget!😀

i tried it in NYC today. went from the Lower East Side of Manhattan to the top of Bear Mountain (55 miles) and planned to take the long way back through Westchester, but the freezing descent and nearly constant leg cramps were killing me. I stopped for a bite and felt like I was going to pass out and throw up. I had to bail. Took the train home 2 hours before sunset. 65 miles. Probably didn't help that I did over 50 miles yesterday. Much respect to Hank!

Coming from Australia I have given this challenge a bit of thought. Other challenges to get ready for it would be how far you can go in 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours and 8 hours and if you can do it 10 or 12 hours. My big issue is I would strongly suggest taking lights and actually stopping somewhere for food, water and toilet stops. Given you could wind up in the middle of nowhere after dark, lights add to the safety. On the issue of the mechanical, I wouldn't bash myself up for the unfortunate punctures but I'm would highly recommend having the resources to fix them eg pump, patch kit, spare tube or whatever you use to fix punctures in tubeless tyres. If necessary make sure the bike is serviced and has new tyres. This challenge is something to think about on both the longest day of the year (the summer solstice and the shortest day of the year or the winter solstice). You could do it on the equinox when the day and night are equal.

Great callout to us in CHCH, NZ, Hank! Had to work so no epic ride that day, but I did get out with a bunch (about 15 of us) for a "mini-tour" to the south of the city late afternoon & into the evening. Some "rehydration" stops at some pubs on the way, 100+km for the night for most of us. Awesome evening! That type of ride could be a GCN video topic ;-)

Haven't done this, but I like the concept! I may give it a whirl but less race, more adventure, and equinox! Get on bike at dawn with pockets full of snacks, ride to cool places, and see where I end up at sundown (if I am smart, it'll be next to a train station to get home after 12hrs). No racing - if I land at a tasty cafe or a cool view, enjoy it before moving on. New goal on my To-Do list! Thanks Hank :)

However, the ice and snow prevented that so I might just have to try the challenge that Hank and Conor did of riding from sunrise to sunset on the longest day of the year! Incidentally, if that was December 21 in Britain it is clear that climate change has made it tropical already--so much greenery!
