Naropa Ananda that is a way of respecting the qualities of that particular person. Buddha statue is to represent the noble enormous qualities of Buddha and people respect to it determining to develop those qualities inside themselves too.

In any cultures that's primarily Buddhism people would clasp their hands and bow to their mom and dad as well to greet them with respect. It's just their version of a hand shake. Don't mistake it for praying.
