Edit: I never went for the change. I stuck to a call center. The pay for entry level medical positions are still stagnated at 9.25 or 10 an hour. I am working now at a call center making $15 an hour. @deeabz
6 жыл бұрын
phlebotomists are sometimes called Lab Assistants, and most of the time, phlebotomists job is just to draw blood and verify and receive on the system that the samples were drawn...Lab Assistants (maybe sometimes called Phlebotomist II or Lab Assistant II) they spin the blood, Aliquot the serum and take the blood samples to its respectful testing bench (CHEMISTRY OR HEMATOLOGY OR COAG BENCHES) THE 3RD LEVEL (LAB ASSISTAN/PHLEBS) they deal with SPECIAL TESTS and SEND OUT TESTS (tests that aren't performed in the lab and needing to be sent to another lab)meaning the ordered test has a special tube, special instructions on how to collect the sample (warming the tube,/tubes on ice/no tourniquet draws ETC) ya, so they deal with the complicated stuff...I know its confusing...i hope that helped a little...i should say though that all levels should have the phlebotomy skill....

Hey this might be a dumb question but do you think a 4 week long course is long enough . There isn’t many good schools from what I’ve looked at near me but 4 weeks just seems too short of a time . Would you recommend a private phlebotomy school or going to a community college for it ? Thanks in advance ❤️
@Danieei
6 жыл бұрын
Lyssa Marie 4 weeks is too short in my opinion I took my Phlebotomy course last year and it was 9 weeks. Honestly, it depends on the person if you can absorb all the information in 4 weeks. Short programs like that usually throw you a lot of information at you in so little time. If I had to reverse time I would go to a community college. There a little longer but you will understand everything. Since they take they’re time teaching you the information.

How was it when you first got hired without experience?
@deeabz
4 жыл бұрын
I first got hired at the the hospital I trained at. (Provides by my school) so they know I’m freshly graduate and totally understood that I didn’t know much. So On top of my 4wk externship, I got another maybe week of training as an actual employee. Usually, everybody in the lab are super helpful. You don’t need to know ALL the tubes and tests, believe me, there’s thousands of test there. What’s important is that if you are unsure of something, make sure you ask a knowledgeable co worker for instructions. Sometimes, it’s not all about what test goes into the tubes. It’s about handling and how you collect the sample. Some are temp and time sensitive, which you will learn those as you go... I wish you all the best on your interview!!!!

Ashley Tyson when I went to school 10years ago, the shortest phlebotomy program was 3 months...most of the newly graduates we hire went to school for the same amount of time maybe 4 months, so I am not sure about now..maybe it also depends on the state you’re in? As far as the Pay, personally it should pay more than minimum wage, which is the case here in Where I live..again depends on the state.. As far as getting a job, I guess as long as your school has a good reputation, you have good chances on getting hired real quick.. Usually for phlebotomy program, there’s an externship, and usually those places end up hiring you if you apply and if they like you... Good Luck!!!And thanks for watching!!!

dee abz, When drawing blood, can you hit some nerve with the needle and cause the patient to feel like she got hit in the funny bone all the way to the wrist index fingers? This happened to me two days ago while I was at a Lab getting some blood work done. The nurse asked me to place my arm over the counter, and because I'm short, my arm was in an awkward upward position, close to a 30-degree angle, she used another method of drawing blood not the butterfly needle...I cannot straighten my arm without feeling that same funny bone tingling.
@deeabz
6 жыл бұрын
NYC Apple Pie ...where did she poke you? I’m guessing hand or wrist? Those areas, unless you have a gigantic vein, a butterfly is what I recommend because there’s a lot of nerves in those areas..so ya, she or he possibly hit a nerve....shheeeezzz...U probably wanted to punch the phlebotomist in the face! I’m sorry that happened...😞

Hi, she poked me in my inner elbow or elbow crease and yes I definitely wanted to punch her. Because I was a walk-in she didn't look too happy to take my blood...I was sitting in a chair with no proper armrest and had to raise my arm up to the counter towards her...crazy chick

This may sound stupid and out of place , but how many scrubs would you recommend a phlebotomist own? I'm about to start school to become one.

1-3 pairs should be good. If you ever soil your scrubs at work, the hospital should have scrubs for their employees. Good luck !!😂😂

Morgan hi! I do work at the hospital and I do like it.now I work at a 600bed hospital so we get crazy busy with draws..sometime 30 patients on a morning list...and those needed to be collected in 2 hours..so results can be seen by docs when they get in before they talk to their patients. I like hospitals because of the schedule flexibility, they have openings all the time..and it works with my family..versus outpatient clinics, they only open during office hours...it’s really up to you..good luck!!!🤗

@deeabz
6 жыл бұрын
Hey there!!awesome job on getting that interview!! hmmm, doctors office? I mean I guess one of the things they look for is someone who is comfortable talking to patients and especially doctors (because they can be intimidating) and also,when I worked at an outpatient clinic there is always one more phlebotomist besides me, so we can help each other out just in case we get a hard stick..but basically as long as you get along with everybody, and have good attitude towards patients, you are good!!! Good luck on the interview and keep me posted!!!👍🏻

Is there a lot of multitasking in the phlebotomy job?
@deeabz
5 жыл бұрын
Uhmm, not really. It depends on your definition on multitasking.. Phlebotomy is more of like a step by step process... If you meant multitasking as far as being a “front desk person aka finding out patients order and figuring out how to get one from their doctor if there’s none”, being the one to actually draw blood and then process the blood after collection, then Yes it’s a lot of multitasking...😊
@rosablackwood5156

@@deeabz I ask because I signed up for a Lab Tech course with phlebotomy as one of the career options. I want to avoid jobs that are demanding with high levels of multitasking. I am talking about multitasking demanding jobs like being a receptionist or a nurse in a busy hospital and wanted to make sure phlebotomy is not like those jobs. Do phlebotomist have to do front desk work in smaller labs, business or clinics? If so I will avoid phlebotomist jobs at those places. - Thanks for responding, it's very helpful and putting me in a bit more ease :)
