I think you can tell him that you need time to do some work and in this time, he can play by himself or help him choose something he would like to do. It's always nice to give them a time. If he cannot already tell the time, show him where the hand of the clock will be before you are with him again. Keep it short in the beginning and get to him as soon as you said you will and slowly increase the time when he is used to it. They had a lot of friends the whole time, but hardly any school stress and you can really tell the difference between them and kids who went to school. They're much more independent, less self conscious, no problem studying on their own etc. Every children's psychologist I've ever talked to agreed that when done properly, homeschooling is very beneficial

Growing up I was at different times in public school, private school, and homeschooled. There were pros and cons to each different method. For all the people who think homeschooling makes you miss out on things, my favorite thing about being homeschooled was the opportunities of which we were able to take advantage because we weren't confined to a school building all day every day. That part of it was pretty great! The con was the added difficulty of logging all of our work and proving to an agency that we had actually learned and accomplished things (homeschooled in High School) so that we could get an accredited diploma, but I think it was worth the extra effort. There's no one right school for every one. You do what works for you!

I was homeschooled growing up and honestly really wish my mom had put me in math classes, I dropped out of college because math was just too hard. I’m going back to college this fall as a 22 year old and I’m terrified. If your kids are struggling in something don’t hesitate to out source. Do what’s best for each child. My special needs brother was public schooled which was great for him. My other brother and sister stayed homeschooled which is what they needed and we recently adopted my other sister from China who is in private school to help her learn English. In the end each child has individual needs, because i was the oldest my mom was stuck on homeschooling me and it had negative effects. We did do co-ops which gave us plenty of social interaction but my mom didn’t put me in a math class because it was hard for me and she didn’t want me to feel embarrassed. I’m probably going to have to start at about a 9th or 8th grade math level.

Welp, I was home schooled and I had a horrible experience from it. I grew up in an emotionally abusive house hold where my mother was extremely neglectful when it came to schooling my brother and I. What made matters worse is that I’m legally blind in one eye and have auditory processing issues (meaning that I have difficulty understanding language). I eventually went to school in my high school years and the amount of catching up I had to do was unbelievable. It is a miracle from God that I have been able to graduate high school and college with decent grades despite being set back years on my education. I think home schooling is a great option but you as a parent MUST be on top of your child’s education. Not to mention have you child exposed to kids their own age (I wasn’t able to make friends or even talk to people of my age group well into college). You have a good head on your shoulders Sarah. I have no doubt that you will be an amazing homeschool mother. I’m only staying this as a precaution to people. I in no way want to bash people who chose this life style. I just want to let people know what NOT to do. God bless you and your beautiful family❤️

I'm sorry you had this experience but you're projecting. A child that is homeschooled by an abusive parent will obviously have a horrible experience. Non-neglectful parents are not going to be like your mother was to you. So of course they will make sure to educate their child and do their best to remove the stresses of traditional school. This is common sense. There is no need to caution people. You're projecting your fear and anxiety onto others.

Homeschooling will come with it's own challenges but I find it's also healthy for the mamas to relearn things and stay educated themselves as they teach their children. Don't let anyone discourage you. You are that child mother for a reason. The Lord made you the mother of that child because you and your husband know what is best for them, not anyone else. I pray that you have a healthy pregnancy, delivery and baby! And that you find many blessings becoming a new mom and that when the time comes to homeschool them you will be successful! ❤😌

Always nice to watch your videos! English is not my mother tongue, so i apologize for any mistake. i live in an European country. I believe we could say that in th European Union the teaching system is quite standardized and similar between the countries, at least in the general organization. I’ve lived in 3 different european countries. Homeschooling is not very frequent, and when it is practiced it is mostly because of a serious illness of the child, or his inability to go to school. Actually i only discovered this reality of homeschooling through american/canadian KZitemrs. Although i admire the ability and dedication of the parents to do it (having to provide for knowledge, activities, etc for their kids most of the time) i must say it is something i would not do. Having 2 kids of my own, i believe in school, for several reasons. I think the home environment and the “strictly “learning environment should be separated for various reasons. For the child to create their own universe, outside the “womb” of their parents, for them to start defining their own individuality. I believe for the most part it is very healthy. My kids love to go to school (preschoolers), to have their own friends, their teachers, and to come home to their “family” space and tell us all about it! Of course i believe children can learn from different us all aspects in life. That still exists when they go to school. But i also believe teachers are professionals like any other professional in their own area of expertise. I don’t think i could ever be able to teach someone the way a teacher could, as he/she learned how to do it in the best way, its their job. I am an architect and i feel somewhat offended when people try or expect to do things that are clearly for an architect to do... i believe each one has their area of expertise. And although this doesn’t take away the value of the knowledge a parent can be able to transfer, i don’t think the mom or dad should be “everything” to their children. Mom and dad can be just that. Parents. I do not want to control every moment of my children existence. Of course i tend to look for the best school, teachers, learning environment, but besides that, the rest is life happening. I say this also knowing that i live in a very safe country, and a middle class (privileged) life. Not everyone could be so lucky i’m conscious of that. In any case, it is just my opinion, assuming that the reality of homeschool is quite estranged from my culture...

A D I grew up in a military family in the US and we moved frequently so my mum homeschooled us (she did have a masters in science) and I will say I rather enjoyed being homeschooled. I still had lots of friends from all backgrounds and different countries/cultures. Most homeschooled students have to be enrolled in certain areas and still do standardized tests and meet requirements. I felt that I did better in college then a lot of my peers because I was used to being more independent in my studies. That aside many people who are able to homeschool in the US are doing it out of fear of the school shootings that are becoming way to common here. But I do see your points and I don’t think homeschooling is for a lot of people!

Parents don't control every aspect of your life just because they are homeschooling. My mom homeschooled me and my 2 siblings since we were born and I would never say she is controlling. It depends on how you grow up as well. Because I was at home, my parents taught me to be respectful and obedient. I have had plenty of friends, I really don't think you need a billion to be happy. I was in sports teams and so we're my siblings. I have had musical lessons too. These things can be attainted without public school. And these books and curriculums we use, are specifically designed for homeschooling. The parent can explain best they can, but I never had a situation where the book did not explain the problems well enough. If it is too hard for the parent, you can still send them to co-op classes for one day, and get homework for the rest of the week that has already been taught by a teacher.

You know, so many people are saying that it isn't the 1800's anymore and we should stop serving our husbands and homeschooling and things like that because times have changed, but my question is this: why we gotta fix something that ain't broke? The relationship between the parents and their kids is more important than the kids' education, and I don't see how a parent can bond with their kid when they're forced to be in a building away from home for hours a day for most of their childhood. Mothers are more than capable of teaching K-12 between having learned those levels themselves and the curriculum that's out there to be used. I know that homeschooling isn't the best for everyone, but I really think that most people who can afford the time and money should at least try it out. I personally would like to be able to raise my kids right at home, letting them learn the way they want instead of being cooped up inside a classroom away from me being fed garbage that doesn't interest them and they're never gonna use in real life. I wanna be able to teach my kids how to cook, clean, change tires, tend a garden, go grocery shopping, do their taxes, handle sticky relationship issues, manage time, all the while at their own pace and in ways they best understand. I want them to have the freedom to explore what interests them instead of being so bogged down with homework that they're too tired to even spend time with their family, let alone maintain healthy friendships. I want them to be able to go outside as long as they want, weather permitting, and explore nature without needing to wait for the school field trip. I want them to be able to develop strong beliefs of their own because of research that they've done instead of just blindly following the crowd that's possibly only been taught one side of an argument. I don't want to shelter my kids. I want to free them from unnecessary stress, peer pressure, and useless drama. I want them to develop their own character and personality so that when they do go to get a job, go to college, or move out, they don't feel insecure or scared, not knowing how to behave in unfamiliar situations. Like I said before, homeschooling is not for everyone, but I do firmly believe that everyone should try it at least for one year or so if time and money allows. I really believe it can be extremely beneficial to both parents and kids.

I feel like I get a lot of bonding time with my kids, they come home for lunch and we spend many afternoons together. And I'm happy that they get that time away from me to grow as people. I love hearing what's happening at school. We do a LOT of learning activities together but no, especially as a teacher myself, I would not want to teach all the subjects my colleagues teach in high school, I have way too much respect for them. My parents home schooled me and my brothers then in high school we went to normal school (if we wanted to, my littlest brother didnt like regular school because he was so ahead of everyone and found it boring) and I loved it. We learned so much because we weren't stuck following a strict curriculum, the curriculum catered to how fast we learned and how much we wanted to learn. And for people worried about socialization, we were all put in dance, karate, and soccer classes (swimming for me) so we spent lots of time with other kids our age in a far less stressful environment where my parents didnt have to worry about us getting bullied or having negative experiences. Plus we went to the park all the time, went to church, youth programs at our rec center. There are TONS of places where kids can socialize that is far better than in public school where teachers cant always see the behaviors the kids engage in and regulate that behaviour or just dont care to try. I'm in university now and I'm well adjusted and comfortable in a variety of environments, plus I'm doing great in my classes because I'm used to learning how to study on my own.

Yes, the relationship aspect of homeschooling is where it appeals to me - so I get you! I sometimes think that I’d like to homeschool my 3 - the relationship building and highly individualised approach to learning would be great. However, it has also been invaluable that my children are amongst lots of different kinds of people and learn to work with them. The kind of socialisation they have experienced is something I cannot duplicate, and has made my children so full of grace for others and highly adaptable and flexible (something I didn’t anticipate!). I also supplement at home with some bits and pieces, so that I do get to experience being my child’s teacher, so I’m thankful we can experience that together. Just sharing as it’s an aspect I didn’t consider before my children were school aged! Thanks for sharing this video with us ❤️

I hated being home schooled, I got to experience both home school and public school and the experiences I gained at a public school far outweigh what I gained being home schooled. Every child is different so while it may be awesome for some it's not for everyone. It was incredibly lonely, yeah I had my family but it's just so not the same as being able to be around peers every single day. To each their own if your child loves it great, but if not then homeschooling might not be for them.

Amen! I was raised by an educator and all these parents who think they can properly educate their kids infuriate me. It’s such hubris. You wouldn’t try and be your child’s doctor because that takes years of training. Believe it not, so does being a teacher. For very early education, sure a parent can handle that, but once they reach “real” school age, let the professionals do their job.

A mother has the right and the ability to teach her kids. She can devote time and energy to each child specifically and give them the attention and care they wouldnt receive in a formal education setting where they are passed off as another student instead of a unique and intelligent individual.

The decision to homeschool your child or send your child is school is all about what is best for your child, for you, and what resources you have available to you. Today there are so many resources to use. The parent/homeschooler is the moderator, the channel through which prepared information is passed onto the child. Having been homeschooled and also having spent three years in college, I can honestly say that there was no difference between my mother teaching me or my English professor teaching me, and the latter had a doctorate and was very, very academic. Both of them taught their students from books that they had not written, yet which they understood and knew how to teach. And the most important thing was that they provided a proper learning environment for me to learn the information. And education is not just about teaching "subjects", it's about "learning how to learn", the development of a critical life skill that you can apply to all the years beyond your child and teenage years of education. I think the last thing I want to say is that these homeschooling mothers do not think they "have more knowledge", or at least, the homeschooling mothers that I have met.. Far from it. I know that my mother did not think this. If she had, that would mean she thought herself superior to her mother, her sister, and her brother-in-law, all of whom were professional teachers. Rather, she sought at-home ways to convey an education to her children that she was as equally capable of comprehending as her dear friend who has been a high school teacher for many years.

P D . I have my doctorate in education and we plan on homeschooling our children. I don't believe all children are better off in the home than in a school setting, but I think it's unfair to say all parents are unfit to educate their children. Even without a university education in teaching, many parents can still successfully educate their children, as long as they have access to the needed resources and the right motivation. After teaching in a K-5 setting for 8 years, I can say with 100% certainty that a school setting is not ideal for every child and is often more about efficiency than quality. Loving parents who know their children, their needs, and their interests are afforded so much more flexibility at home than in a school setting. So many different ways and no one right path for all! (In my opinion)

@asher20100 I FULLY agree, though as an Early Education Teacher myself, I can tell you that I spend ALOT of time in a day with other people’s kids and there are a lot of ways in which our relationship is unique to that of the one between a parent and child. I personally don’t see anything wrong with this, but some parents don’t appreciate that kind of bond. I’ve had kids call me Mom. I’ve had kids say they wish I was their Mom instead. I’ve had kids who open up in my classroom and act differently than at home when they are allowed to think and behave independently. I think it’s important to acknowledge the sacrifice/trade off in enrolling your child in a public school. Working parents sacrifice that bond and we as teachers step in when we can. One choice isn’t better than the other, I just think it’s important to highlight the point of that specific comment Sarah made. I wish Parents would be able to spend as much time with their kids as I do. It’s incredibly beneficial for them to have that kind of interest in their education.

I go to public school and I am VERY happy that I am not homeschooled. To me it seems like the kids that have been homeschooled just miss certain important things (like today my friend basically had no idea what the Cold War was and we’re in high school). And my friend also had trouble taking timed assessments. That’s just my opinion, but I feel like the social, emotional, and academic skills are generally better when kids are in public school. One other thing. I think being in public school exposes you to people who are different than you. And if the only way you get exposed to other perspectives (not white & Christian) is through books etc and not person to person, it’s going to be difficult.

Teachers were not there to help students one on one and the majority of the time we were left on our own for 40-50 minutes to do the work on paper that we were given. There are multiple studies showing that homeschooled kids perform BETTER than public/private schooled children. It’s not about the qualifications of the teacher, it is the desire to see the child do well. Also, a parent is going to be able to split their time more evenly down easily between 3 (or in my mom’s case, 7) children more easily than one teacher with 130+ students.

I thought it was interesting how being the only homeschooled student in a driver's Ed class that I was the only one who scored 100% on both written tests. Overhearing the other students talking, most got 50% or lower. I was shocked! I thought that most of the stuff on the test was common sense! It makes me wonder how they go about studying for regular school if they scored so low on something that I considered so easy.

I’m honestly kinda hoping this switch to online school for however long due to the corona virus will result in some parents homeschooling and some teens who could benefit doing online school at home or even just some classes online at home and the rest at school. I am in 12th grade, graduating soon and have been doing online school at home since 10th grade. There are many pros and cons but it helped my mental health so I don’t regret it. It also helped me tune in on what I want my career to look like (online, at home).

My Mom homeschooled me and my siblings. It was great! I wish that I could homeschool my kids, but my full time job gets in the way of that. My kids are in 11th grade and 8th grade, so it is probably too late to start now anyways.

That looks like so much fun. The Australian equivalent is sliding down sand dunes on large sheets of cardboard !! Are your house windows double glazed for thermal insulation ? We are 34 deg.C and 2000% humidity for third day in a row here 😣

What about when your kids get to high school chemistry and physics? Will you still homeschool then? Also what do you do so that your kids still get out to socialize?

My husband and his 10 siblings were homeschooled. 2 hated it & felt they missed out on other things, but 8 are really grateful to have gotten that kind of education. A lower adult:child ratio in my opinion is always better, given you're intentionally homeschooling and individualize your curriculum. My siblings and I were in the public school system & also have differing opinions on how it helped/harmed us. I would love to homeschool my children with co-ops and field trips. More homeschool tutorial videos please!

I was homeschooled for only 5th grade because I fell behind in 4th grade math (mom used to be a math teacher). Thank goodness it was only 5th grade, my mom and I clashed so hard and there were many tears on my end. Making me do so much math over and over haha it might have been for the best because now math is one of my favorites subjects. My reservations with homeschooling would be wanting them to be ready for college. My aunt homeschools her 6 kids and they are all really dumb 😬 but my neighbor growing up homeschooled their kids and they are some of the smartest upstanding kids I know 🤷♀️

I love how patient you are with your kids! My son is 10, but when he was little I really struggled with that. Kudos to you! Also, I am a salon owner and esthetician and for my clients with acne scarring I always suggest dermarolling (aka dermaneedling) it May sound scary but it’s not. It’s totally something you can have done or do at home yourself with proper info on Dos and don’ts. It is by far the most effective and is very inexpensive. Feel free to email me if you need more info or just google it.

Previous public school momma and I always thought school was a waste of time the way it was done. I have 2 and have loved being a part of her education. We just stared morning menus and I think you would love them. Both your older two can do them and its also just good time together as well!

Be careful with homeschooling. It might have worked for you, but for your kids it might not. Some things you should worry about: -Dependency on the parents; -having social problems later on. Schools are a great way to learn how to socialize with a bunch of kids the same age. -having the kids time away from the parents gets them to define themselves better or faster. Again. Just know your kids, think things through and DEFINETELY research the pros and cons.

When you said -10 I chuckled, I was still using a fall coat at -10. I’m not affected by cold easily. I used that fall coat until it was -20 last winter.

I homeschool my 4 year old and my 10 year old. We love it. We have so much time to adventure, to go to museums & go to the park! My kids also have the option to go to public school but for now my 10 year old prefers homeschool.

I was homeschooled from kindergarten until 4th grade and then went to a Waldorf school until 7th grade and LOVED it. I definitely had social issues for the first year but luckily improved it as the years went by. Waldorf schools are amazing and would highly recommend if any are in the area of a Waldorf school.
