Donut and the rest of his litter was born in Rabbit Hash Kentucky, rescued by 2 wonderful ladies and brought to NKY to find their forever home. He and his sister Chloe (quite the firecracker of a kitty, but a story for another time) were the 2 we picked based on the recommendation that Donut was the best natured of the bunch. He was going to our 3 year old so that was important. He was the sweetest kitty we could have ever asked for! He loves snuggles and belly rubs. Don’t let his good demeanor fool you, he is the alpha kitty in our house and he is large and in charge! Donut was diagnosed with diabetes when he was about 8 and was fighting for his life before we knew what was going on. He had to be hand fed with a syringe to gain the weight he lost when he was very sick. Donut’s diabetes was finally under control with 2 insulin shots a day and he became a fat and healthy kitty! He got up to 19 pounds! And that’s just the way his doctor wanted him. Donut produces urine crystals so he is on a special diet consisting mostly of carbs so he takes more insulin that most kitties. He had his bladder scrapped out only once thankfully as that is a very rough surgery. He also developed seasonal allergies and sneezes a lot and becomes quite stuffy at times. He takes 2 inhalers a day to help with his respiratory issues. He has had 3 pre cancerous spots removed and has one on his chin currently but we are no longer removing them due to their low activity level and his age. Medicine helps keep the lump pretty quiet. Later in life he developed pancreatitis which has caused him all kinds of trouble. He stops eating when he doesn’t feel well and it causes him to drop his glucose level because he’s still getting insulin twice a day and we have had to give him food and honey in a syringe to maintain a functioning sugar level. It has been as low as 35 and below 60 is considered critical. He has had to go to the hospital for iv treatment a few times as well. We eventually installed a video monitoring camera on his food so we know if he’s eating regularly. Donut is 17 now and has lost a bit of his chubby fluff over this lasy year but he’s still climbing in his hammock and chasing things around. I know some people might wonder, why would you do all these things for a cat? If you knew Donut, you would know why. Because he is the greatest kitty I’ve ever know and arguably ever will! ❤️
