IS THAT L-KONSONANT NOT SOMETIMES PRONOUNCED AS R, FOR EXAMPLE IN OBJECT MARKERS LIKE ROMANIZED "-REUL".
@danijeld8669
5 жыл бұрын
First, and most important, romanization, most of the time, CAN NOT represent the Korean sounds in a way they actually sound, especially if it just transliterates Hangul! Korean Unnie also said it many times. At 3:12 she compares 라~ and la. It's an excellent start if you hear the difference! Try to mimic and you'll notice that when pronouncing, the tongue is positioned and behaves differently with ㄹ, so it can make both l/r-like sounds. BUT, NOT really as R in English, or even L, as she demonstrated! Other languages also have the letter R, that can sound closer to ㄹ in the 'middle' of words. At the beginning it clearly reminds of l, although it isn't l. It's all happening cuz the tongue is the main part of the mouth that participates in producing of all these: l, r, ㄹ. Some even compare the "middle" ㄹ and Spanish rolled R. Seems that it's maybe actually impossible for ㄹ to stay l-like when it's surrounded by other letters/characters. I remembered from one video that the tongue even starts from the position for D, but then you say L! Sound weird. But it's maybe better not to overthink. Try pronouncing words from the video in a way Korean Unnie did! I think that in the case of ㄹ the whole front part of the tongue somehow goes up and touches the palate higher, than with l. Korean Unnie surely decided not to mention r because the uniqueness of Korean sounds require practice, rather than comparing. I personally need to do it. Don't have much of it. (Romanization can just try to represent sounds, but all Korean letters are unique to a degree. Don't rely only on romanization. Don't forget that Korean also has some sound change rules and also batchims, which have their own way of pron. But It's actually NOT complicated. You just need do it regularly and listen a lot and practice... That goes for me too lol :)

To be honest, this is the letter that most Korean Alphabet learners struggle as it sounds in between R and L. A tip for pronunciation for learners like me outside Korea: Try to pronounce R while saying L. How? Use the tip of your tongue to touch your pallette. That's how I notice most Koreans pronounce ㄹ. It sounds somewhere between R and L, BUT sounds like Spanish R when the next letters are ㅏㅓㅗㅜ. Hope this helps!! Thanks to this video, 한국언니!!!
