To those who have no idea how f legend this song is in the Philippines, it is ALWAYS played in every party, birthday, radio, or any occasion. I think it is the only Filipino song that NEVER died until today. It became part in our culture. Its popularity here is non-stop since it was released. We grew up with this music and created many memories. If there's really an immortal Filipino song, it should be "Dayang Dayang". Edit: Everyone in the comments debating whether it is truly a Filipino song or not. I have no idea too. Whether it is true or not, it's already part of us.

This Original Version of Dayang-Dayang was originally sung by HAINUN PANGILAN. She belongs to a Ethnic Group called "SAMA" in the Southernmost part of the Philippines and that Local dialect spoken was SINAMA/SIYAMAL. I personally knew this singer who became my neighbor for long years. She recently lived in SITANGKAY, TAWI-TAWI. Till now if there are some Celebrations or Parties, People still request her to sing a various songs locally popularized by her.

+Reynalyn Hajan Thanks for this wonderful info. I visited Sibutu in 2013. On the way to the capital town of Bongao, our speed boat picked up passengers in Sitangkay. I love the Samal people. They contributed to us the mellow song Baleleng, and now this danceable Dayang Dayang hit too. Tho not a Muslim let me say Allah hu Akbar!

This was composed by young female badjao. While sailing or paddling they use to sing for hours and mentioning names on their songs to any tune (like love song) they do this to avoid getting bored while paddling for many hours or sailing. During the early 80s most badjao children sing dayang dayang while playing, then later some adult badjao adopted the song and added some lyrics. The song scattered up to Sabah Malaysia where badjao use to travel to find means to earn a living. The original song was no musical instrument at all it was just pure vocal and some filipino muslim in Sabah created the musical tunes synchronization using mini or midi piano and recorded it using cassette tape recorder just for fun then it became popular in badjao and non badjao community in Sabah. The song with its complete musical tunes in a cassette tape became popular in Sulu too. During the 90s it was first popularized by Muslim CD/DVD vendors in Zamboanga city by repeatedly playing on thier audio player. Ps. Just found these on different video back then lol Btw sa mga nag tatanong kung sino yung singer sya po si Hainun na galing Tawi-tawi the language that used was sinama not tausug, but most of the lyrics was gibberish if you interested on hainun here's one of her song kzitem.info/news/bejne/mH9ntHqbqYF3eH4

The original version of “Dayang Dayang” Pakiring song-dance of the Filipino Muslims of Mindanao, Sulu Archipelago and Sabah is originally based on the traditional song called Kiriring Pakiriring and often accompanied with the dance. The song was later popularized when it was re-recorded by an unknown artist under the title, Dayang Dayang, however some of the lyrics have been changed and is considered by many to be largely gibberish since the altered words had no meaning behind them and were not related to any dialect or language. The meaning of its name is believed to be referring to Hadji Dayang Dayang Piandao, the first lady of Sulu, since the word dalay-dalay was a title given only to the daughters of the Sultan. In the 90’s, the version is widely known across the Philippines rather than the original but its origin and the artist who recorded it remains a mystery. It also had many versions in different languages in the different regions in the Philippines.

According to my research, "The lyrics of the song are in Sinama ( NOT Bahasa nor Malay nor Tamil) and are thought to have originated from Simunul (part of Mindanao) where the language is often spoken. Dayang Dayang Hadji Piandao Kiram (1884) is the first lady of Sulu. The title Dayang Dayang, by which she is popularly known, means "princess of the first degree", a title given only to the daughters of the Sultan.

I loved this song, it's a happy song that invites us to dance happily as a child. I am listening to this song for the first time, today, here in South America. I do not understand anything about the Indonesian, Filipino, Bahasa, Malay and their dialects ... But if the expression 'Pakiring' means 'pushing hips' ... so I think I found out here that a Brazilian singer (?) called Gretchen was inspired or appropriated the piriripi piririp of this song to launch her Mel do do Piripiri (Je Suis La Femme) in Brazil in 1978, where she became nationally known as queen of the butt because as a singer she was lamentable, with lyrics of bad taste. I prefer to follow with this sweet and happy song "Dance of the Princess" = "Dayang Dayang". Big hug to all!

In the Philippines, a traditional song called Kiriring Pakiriring is often accompanied with the dance. The lyrics of the song are in the Sinama language and are thought to have originated from Simunul where the language is often spoken. The song was later popularized when it was re-recorded by an unknown artist under the title, Dayang Dayang, however some of the lyrics have been changed and is considered by many to be largely gibberish since the altered words had no meaning behind them and were not related to any dialect or language.

For those who didnt know the Princess behind the song this is her story!... Brave Princess who fought to abolished slavery during her time was Dayang Dayang Hadji Piandao Kiram (1884) Hadji Dayang Dayang Piandao is the first lady of Sulu. The title Dayang Dayang, by which she is popularly known, means "princess of the first degree", a title given only to the daughters of the Sultan. ...Five women slaves were needed to give her a bath, one takes care of the soap, another of the towels, a third cleans her hands, a fourth her feet, etc. Five sleep by her side as special maids. Before the abolishment of slavery the Sultan used to keep as many concubines as he cared for, usually twenty or thirty at a time who are calculated to have numbered at least 500 in all, and all of these were Dayang Dayang's slaves. Intelligent as she is, and she proved to be an excellent executive and administrator. By common consent, Dayang Dayang is the most progressive of the Mohammedan women. She believes in the friendship and ultimate assimilation of Muslims and Christians, and is exerting all her influence and efforts to bring about better relations between them.

Great info. Would like to know also if this Aishwarya Rai as posted above is the original singer of this very popular song. For those who speaks or understands Tausug a translation of the song would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Finally! someone who knows. This song just got famous with the help of its catchy rhythm and may get confused to be a foreign song, but this is indeed Filipino or rather Tausug music. I don't about the uploader putting aishwarya rai as the cover though. This is about a great princess from Sulu in the late 1800s. Hence the word "Dayang".
