When Slate was explaining Gunfire’s powers to him, it looked like he was doing the “carefree anime male” pose with the hands behind the head. I’ve seen Goku do that a number of times, so the pose just triggered me to read his lines there in Goku’s voice. So surreal...

1. Nice new intro. 2 this was in the 90s and maybe they felt they could create new characters more violent and edgy like image comics. 3. Characters come and go, some are really popular at some point and eventually disapear, creating a new one that succeeds must be hard specially in dc comics.

You rightly point out that new and replacement characters have always been a thing and so many comments are "No, it's different now because SJWs." Wow the point flew right over their heads. The only thing different is that these people have decided any kind of diversity is a "forced political agenda." It's funny, I have some friends who are older comics fans, and they hate the replacement characters of the 90s like Venom, Kyle Raynor, Wally West, etc. But I grew up with all those characters and I really like them. The Venom movie did surprisingly well in the box office the past few weeks. I think ten years from now the kids reading comics right now are going to have a lot of nostalgia for characters like Miles Morales and Kamala Khan.

These asshole whiners would probably be quick to say "NO! we're NOT racists or sexist! we have nothing against African americans and women!" and then go on about how they hate forced diversity, but I'll bet you anything if we turned back the clock to the early 70s they would be up in arms about how all of these new characters getting their own books all of a sudden, like Black Goliath and Black Panther and Luke Cage are just Marvel trying to reach a market segment that doesn't read comics, and that they should instead publish books geared for real fans...oh, and those other books for SJWs like these new feminists that have been popping up...THEY don't read comics, why don't they publish more comics like Millie the Model, especially since she just got married...but no, they're trying to cater to people who don't buy comics with these series like the Cat...THAT's not gonna sell and no one cares about that character...And I don't like this other new book calles Ms Marvel which has "THIS woman strikes back!" on the cover...that's so disrespectful, especially to all of our US military...And her alter Ego is always speaking disrespectfully to a long time beloved character like J. Jonah Jameson inside the book, and she keeps going on about not needing men and being as strong...I tell you, this character will NEVER catch on, let alone being in a movie one day... Funny how things don't change, even 40 years later

I'm gonna' be frank; what they're attempting today is no better or even all that different than what they were doing in Liefeld's 90s. It may be a different thematic approach today, but its really no different to back then; they pump out all these character that they think will appeal to 'the current readers', only for so many of these characters to be recalled by the end of the decade, some disappearing into the ether altogether

I agree with you, the comic book industry is constantly forcing new characters down our throats. But the thing is is that in the past if the character hadn’t done well, they are completely phased out. These new characters are sticking around and trying to replace all of the old characters, and it’s only getting worse. What also makes this a controversial subject, is that when these new comic book creators are receiving any kind of critique, thiscomic book creators attack people personally. As opposed to trying to better their skill, craft, art, etc. Also, yes this video is two years old, but you were not looking at the full picture.

Peter Stellenberg Apologies for the masssive wall of text here. Just wanted to vent. No, there's no SJW conspiracy, just a tendency. The fact that they now call Jane Foster "Thor", despite Thor being a name and not a fucking title is a perfect example of how stupid the new Marvel comics are. I'm fine with Jane Foster being the Godess of Thunder, but it's 1. They call her Thor for some reason and 2. they also replace Banner with Amadeus Cho, Steve Rogers with Sam Wilson, Tony Stark with Riri Williams, etc. at a similar time that's annoying. There's also a bunch of other stuff like the Mockingbird cover that's just annoying. I'm fine with these characters and some of these changes, but in some cases, like Falcon, I'd just like them to keep being who they already are. Plus, why can't Ironheart just be a new character instead of her being Stark's replacement? That seems pointless and adds to the feeling of them phasing out the better, deeper characters with new ones, most of whom aren't very interesting at all. The thing isn't just that people are pissed off at Marvel creating a diverse cast of characters, it's with them replacing established and beloved characters with infinitely less appealing ones. And a lot of people blame it on "SJW Marvel", and when the only concievable reason for them doing this is to add diversity for brownie points, it's only natural that that is what they blame it on. You know what I would be fine with? All of these being new characters that don't replace the superior ones and not talking about politics when the writers are not good or smart enough to do in a clever, non-condescending and decent way. That's what gets under my skin.

A trope I dislike is that that they're one dimensional. It reminds me of the early days of black superheroes. They're trying, but dont quite get it. Its work that I think will age very poorly. Just write them as interesting and dynamic characters who happen to be LGBTQ/whatever as a far less important trait, ya know, like most popular characters. It's been done well before and can be done again.

I think there's outrage over new characters being "forced" on the reader books down to two factors. 1st, political ideologies. It does seem to me that those who scream "sjw" over anything are rather right-wing, so they see everything through that filter and react accordingly. 2nd, ego. A lot of the older fans seem to think that they are the center of the universe, and that everything comic publishers do must be geared towards them exactly. And so when publishers change characters, take them in a different direction, introduce new characters,car to anything that they don't like, they will scream that it is insult to the older fan base. They seem to ignore what you said so well in the video, that publishers are in the business of attracting new readers. And that is especially true when the older fan base is shrinking. I'm sorry to ramble on, but this has been in my mind for a while. Anyway, great vid!

True Fan Forum Characters being forced on the reader is different then creating characters for the readers. If you are forcing something on someone the implication is that the recipient doesn't want it and they are receiving it against their will. Creating something for someone is anticipating or using your knowledge of the recipient to give them something that you believe they will like... Not something that you will like. A desire to obtain new readers is has always been crucial to a publishers survival. But I would argue that maintaining that reader base is even more crucial. Turning longterm readers away from your product is financial suicide. The idea is to grow your reader base not shrink it. Contrary to popular belief long term readers do not want to chase new readers away. Instead they revel in the idea of new young readers that they can share their hobby with. A bond if you will between the kid who is discovering the media for the first time and the veteran reader. A symbiotic relationship where in the excitement of the new reader will bring questions and joy to the older reader through an exchange of knowledge and history. A sharing of a media that has a rich and for filling legacy. Dismissing canon across the board or replacing characters that have endured decades in favor of a personal political agenda under the guise of attempting to obtain new readership is disrepectful to the vested veteran readers that financially funded your company through product patronage for decades. This fo par is reflected in declining monthly sales yet publishers refuse to see the mistake they are making. Perhaps it will give them something to ponder when they are standing on the unemployment line.

I just read this comic after this review. The art is very good. Nice 90's energy. I think where it begins to "fall-off", towards the end, is due to the finishes/the inking. You can see that there are about 5 or 6 inkers listed on the splash page - and this, to my knowledge, is indicative of a rush-job; you are (almost) entirely correct in saying that the art peters-out towards the end; almost right, except that: it sometimes picks back up on certain pages - and then goes very basic and rushed again. This, to me, bolsters what I said about it going thru many hands (for inking), and it being a big rush. The pencilling portion looks great. Really nice work. The artist did only a small handful of comics, and now - from what little I have gleaned - seems to work as an "illustrator", which is vague enough to cover every discipline known to man! Cheers for a great episode Chris. And Merry Xmas to you and your family, Cheers "LiL'JpD."

Yeah, the Bloodlines arc was rough to say the least. It's uninspired and a product of trying to chase a new demographic. It's such a shame to, because I think handled properly, it could've been a cool arc, and some of the Bloodlines characters are actually decent enough. DC was definitely not on stride at this point in their run. I will say, I have a huge soft spot for Argus. He never even got a full book, just a mini series; and yeah, in some ways he was as derivative as the rest lol. But! I've always enjoyed his design, and I think that the right team could've done something with him. Even the mini series was pretty good.

I'm a bit late, but here are my thoughts. First, I'm not really on either side of the whole #comicsgate thing, both sides have important points of view that seem to be somewhat misunderstood by the other. As far as "conservatives" go, I don't believe their "outrage" is over forced diversity, it's that those characters (Amadeus Cho-Hulk, Riri Williams-Iron Man, Jane Foster-Thor etc) are replacing characters they love with long storied histories as opposed to simply being introduced alongside the established heroes. And yes, it has been mostly a Marvel issue, DC has introduced "diverse" new heroes left and right without replacing the established, they're just an addition (Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Katherine Kane, Duke Thomas) and readers generally accept them with minimal fuss, because if they don't like them they still have the heroes they love. Just how I see that side of the argument.
@NoJusticeNoPeace

Marv Wolfman actually wanted to use Crisis to re-invent DC's major characters with more diversity; Superman would be black, Wonder Woman was going to be Latino, the Atom would be Asian, and so on. DC management vetoed it, guessing correctly that their largely young, white, male, reactionary readers would flip their wigs and revolt. Some of the character concepts eventually made their way into continuity (Sunshine Superman, Nubia, the Ryan Choi Atom, etc.) and proved to be extremely unpopular, as DC had known they would be.
@shoddyworkmanship4934

I think this is right too. We don't get new characters; all of the old characters are simultaneously replaced by non-white or non-male people. It's impossible not to notice a trend.
@WishIWuzKaji

I didn't know that about Wolfman, that's really interesting. And it makes sense given that he was trying to bring diversity into comics way before DC would let him (they actually recolored a black character white in one of his early comics, which would have been the first ever black superhero, instead Marvel beat them to the punch). I think what a lot of angry comic fans don't realize, however, is just how niche their hobby really is. Now, I love comics, I buy them every week, but looking at the numbers, the biggest comic seller last month (Return of Wolverine) sold 250,000 copies. The Black Panther movie, on the other hand, grossed more than any of Wolverine's movies. Which do you think Disney cares more about? The comics don't really matter anymore, they're really just a test kitchen for potential movie ideas, and the movies are what really determines whether or not a character is popular, at least in any way that matters financially. Comic readers may complain about a character like Miles Morales, but I think he's going to be huge after his movie comes out in December.

Im one of those pesky ''comicsgaters'', and I have to say, I didnt leave modern comics books, their creators abandoned us. There is no shrinking consumer base over an already niche medium, there is ideologically driven alienation. I grew up in the 90s and 00s, and as you may guess, I sat through a shitton of animated series: batman, superman, justice league, batman beyond, spiderman, xmen, iron man, etc, what a time it was to be a kid. I still hunt down older comics and I will always do, but these new writers and artists (whose resume is limited or non existing) dont want me here, Im a latino and a liberal yet I consider personal ideology (propaganda) and lifechoices shouldnt be the focal point of storytelling, they happen to disagree, I happen not to give them money. I watch CT's channel pretty often, he is funny and knowledgeable, dont care what his views are, as he doesnt make them the focal point of his videos, weird isnt it, its almost like if you just do your job and dont alienate the consumer base, no one complains. Hey! Paste Pot Pete is one of the greatest villains in comics' history! Plus your vest gag is wise considering all the nutty and reactionary imbeciles that might take your comments too seriously. DC comics are always pushing bad ideas these days and this a very good review of one of the worse ones.

I don't know why but I felt the need to buy almost all of these back then. They sucked and then I'd buy another one. I guess it just felt like I needed to be part of the new "iconic" character instructions.

Huh, I have quite a few of the Bloodlines comics and I never drew a parallel between the Parasites (as they are called in the comics) and the seven deadly sins. Sure, now that you mention it I can see where one can be associated with gluttony, but that's it. They just seemed like generic monsters. And I will admit I do like some of the characters from Bloodlines, but then I'm a sucker for new characters.

That's not a 50 cal, that's a mini SAW which is in 5.56. If the company did manufacture shotguns, having a machine gun around the office wouldn't be a big deal. Have you seen Brandon Herrara of KZitem fames' office??

Most forced characters were crap then and they're crap now. They do seem to be pushed more front and center nowadays when they were easier to ignore in the nineties. Every so often you'd get a one-shot character shoehorned into your Superman comic, but they'd be forgotten by the next issue and you'd move on.

skunkape Oh, that's too bad! I was hoping to send a comic to you. It's about Batman in Hong Kong and drawn by a top Manhua (Chinese comics) creator, Tony Wong. It will be interesting to see your review, particularly if you did your usual research as the comic actually has a lot of Manhua tropes.

Quick thing to note about the machine gun at 9:16 I dont expect you or anyone else too know it right off the bat. You call it a 50 cal machinegun and I get it, it looks big. But that actually appears to be a form of FN Mini commonly known as the M249. It looks like a bit of a mix of an older model, but what might be interesting to note is. Since he's in France the company making them is FN Herstal who are just across the border in Belgium. Soo in some way he could have gotten the machinegun from there, still odd because thats a fully automatic 200 round box magazine 5.56 LMG .... like that's not easy to come by xD But yeah funny bit of knowledge

I liked a few of the Bloodliners. Sparx was cool. She didn't catch on quite as well as Hitman but she was part of the Superboy and the Ravers which lasted 19 issues. Loose Cannon was on the verge of being cool. Even if he was a rip off of the PAD era Hulk.

HITMAN (Tommy Monahan) was cool, and one of my favorite things about the 90s....did you ever read the HITMAN/JLA 2 issue team-up, where Garth returns to Tommy one last time, just to say a final goodbye? Great issues, and he even brought the xenomorph like aliens back for one last look too....typical Garth and McCrea, even having Wonder Woman serving the men coffee in one hilarious panel.
