I'm under 60, so the natural choice was NCE for me! LOL!! :) Seriously ( because I see there's a TROLL on here shooting down half the comments!)..... When it came down to stuff we do often, like CV's and consist shuffling, NCE is hands down the most user friendly of the two. NCE users NEVER have to calculate CV 29. Programming starting voltage, or speed matching is a breeze. When you use NCE - you'll never need to know what a *BINARY* is!!! If you're running two separate trains with one throttle, switching between the two is a one button breeze! There's quite a few more reasons why NCE is a better choice... Essentially, it's powerful & flexible enough for advanced modelers, AND user-friendly enough for novices to jump right in!!! :) In my 9 years with DCC, I have never ONCE heard that about Digitrax. [Yet, most ol' timers SWEAR by them!!]

Interesting, NCE seems the hands down "winner", although Digitrax has updated their gear a lot over the past couple of years. I, however operate with a Lenz system, and the NCE is almost an exact copy of the Lenz system (the throttle's have nearly the same way to set addresses and CV's). The major issue I have with Lenz, is that the manuals are translated from German, and a lot of the syntax is goofy and difficult to figure out. However, I found better translations through the Yahoo Lenz group and just printed them out. I didn't see whether either of the two systems have a "scrolling" feature. That is, there's a button on the Lenz throttles that allow the operator to scroll through the list of engine addresses that have been entered into the system, so no "obtaining" the address manually each time.

They have the digitrax duplex radio system which you dont have to plug in to select a loco and program and such. Also you can type in the numbers for the system instead of spinning the knob.

First Off the Tittle should be Comparison of Digitrax and NCE Throttles. After reading the comments found that one thing was not mentioned. I initially looked at Digitrax due to the Fact I run Kato N Scale and they have a Partnership with Digitrax. But here are a couple of issues I found when choosing between the two most of the HO clubs here in California seem to like NCE because on the surface it's simple. Digitrax 400 series can control two locos i.e. why their two knobs. Digitrax Throttles can be used with out a 9V Battery (he skipped that) all their Throttles have loconet connectors and can run off loconet bus power. Also he didn't cover the Zephyr series their are two DCS-50 and DCS-51 these two are very friendly look like your old school DC Throttle. But here is the main reason you want to go with Digitrax. 1) more accessories than any other system also only digitrax supports transpondering. 2) Best warranty 1yr no worries warranty doesn't matter you fried it or you modified it i.e. solder contacts etc. 3) Great Tech support and FAQ's 4) Uses loconet 6 wire system doesn't matter if you flip the wire 1&6, 2&5, 3&4 are interchangeable. Ok Im a Fan of Digitrax so to be Fair tell you what I don't like 6 wire cable and icecube connectors are more expensive than 8 wire and RJ45 icecubes. If you go with Zephyr or use DS unit can only run 28 locos well I don't have or plan to have 28 locomotives but typos when entering the loco number eat up those slots. so you get some weird issues so you have to remember before going crazy trying to fix the issue reset the throttle or DS unit. And last item I don't like about digitrax N Scale sound decoders, it's very dificult to find space for the 300uF capacitor and when it stalls it goes through an entire sound startup sequence before it starts to move. Their some CV's you can modify that will fix this but Im planing most likely to not use sound in the locomotive but in a rail car more space and don't need to worry about stalls. So the number one question you should ask your self before you go DCC is what do I want to do. Second Question is do I want to join a local Club. That will really narrow down which is best. I for example run 2 layouts one with Zypher DCS-51 Test layout 36" x 26" has bit of everything almost. Main Layout is 10' x 12' runs around the perimeter of a room and want it to fully operated using your iphone or android or remotely via web with camera gives you cab view and shows track layout and you can see were the locomotive is due to transponding in the locomotive and caboose.

Great Customer service? I need to replace a knob on my throttle (the one that changes the speed). Sent in a "How can I obtain a knob" request. "Digitrax does not send out parts, you have to send in your throttle for repair. $35 + parts + shipping." Brenda, who is apparently head of customer service as well as the repair department, "Sir, Digitrax does not sell parts." Of course, they do sell parts, they are selling knobs for $35 + part + shipping + the inconvenience of being without the unit for however long they have it. When I pointed this out to Brenda, she hung up.

Nice and clear video. I honestly don't know where to start to convert my layout to DCC. It's a large home layout and will have about 350 to 400 feet on mainline once all the track is installed. I would like to run 2 to 4 locomotives and have radio control. My other problem is I am old school and have many older Brass Steam Locomotives and if possible i will like to convert some of those especially my 3 Sierras. (It's a mountain railroad with steep grades). The other brass I am not sure if it will be worth the expense (and time) to covert as I have about 30 older brass locos total. Any input is surely welcome. Thanks........................Philip

Thanks again for this video! I found it very helpful in deciding on a DCC system. I live in an area that does not afford much opportunity to see or try many of the DCC systems. I did get to check out some Digitrax gear and the UT4 and DT402 throttles at a store and also during a visit to a club layout. I'm not near enough to a club to participate so going with what they have was not really an issue. I did like some of what Loconet had to offer, and the Zephyr would probably been as much power and functionality as I would have needed. I like the 402 throttles, and some of the other Digitrax products seemed like a good all around package. I could see it working out well for many. The things I didn't like, or that didn't fit for me, were the Zephyr's stationary form factor, and that I didn't particularly like the UT4 throttles. My plans don't really have a great spot for a stationary throttle, such as a yard, at least not at this point. To get where I was wanting to be, at least at this point, the Digitrax system was going to be a little more costly, and in the long term the same was true. I ultimately chose the Power Cab system along with a Cab06p engineer throttle. I will likely add a third throttle at some point. Along with this I've also picked up an SB5 smart booster and a CAT5 UTP panel. I've made an "adapter cable" per the provided instructions and all is well. At this point, the SB5 and panel are stored away waiting for me to get to building. For my space and goals, NCE fit nicely, The power cab was a great starting point at a good price. The limitations of the NCE starter set fit into my plans nicely as well, I still only have 2 locomotives, one with sound and one without. My space and plans will never accommodate more operators than the SB5 will allow for, nor do I plan to utilize a computer for operations or signaling/detection. Loconet is nice, but I don't plan to use more than NCE will offer. I like the interface and throttle on the Power Cab, as well as the NCE engineer throttle offerings. I think with the new SB5 and Cab06 throttles, NCE really deserves a look, and may just tick all of the right boxes for those who won't use the additional features Loconet offers, or won't need more than 6 cabs, or have a club to join that uses Digitrax. These are the main differences that sold me on the NCE system. Thanks again for the video as it was a great help for me, clearly demonstrating the use of the two systems and their throttles. Maybe you could put up a video showing the Zephyr Extra and the Power Cab, and their respective upgrade paths, highlighting some key differences in the systems. That would help folks immensely! Thanks again!

First thoughts: I did not realize that you could not acquire a locomotive without plugging in, that feature alone would cause me to reject this system, a wireless system that needs wired connections to "get" a loco? I s there a newer version of Digitrax that allows complete wireless control like all the others? I don't like turning the knob to find a CV, as opposed to being able to directly enter the CV. Modern decoders have many higher numbered CVs, and I'd be spinning that knob forever.

@MRhobbyist

Digitrax allows you to run one loco without a decoder - NCE does not allow this. Running a non-DCC decoder equipped loco this way does not give you the finest speed control and the loco makes harmonic noises constantly when run this way. Most who have done this con't consider it a serious way to run a non-DCC loco on a DCC layout. Better is to spend the $15 for a fleet decoder and do it right.

John Brown - The B'Mann EZ-DCC is an excellent way to get started! Even if "getting started" is after 32 years of running analog, like I had..... The LEAST regrettable decision I ever make, was getting a $149.95 NCE PowerCab!! It had a LOT more controls on the hand-held throttle - but was more user-friendly than ANY of the others!!! (Except EZ-Command - but the Bachmann system is VERY limited, and you'll outgrow it quickly) However, if all you're going to do is run 2 or 3 trains on a small Layout, an plan little or no further expansion, B'Mann may be the right one for you!

Have you upgraded yet? If not, have a look at the SB5 Smart Booster. It allows walk around capability with the Power Cab, and frees up the Power Cab panel for the workbench or other projects. It allows up to 6 cabs and 3 accessory devices such as a USB interface, Mini-Panel, etc. If this is enough for your needs, it may just save you some cash. I'm not sure other than that, what the major differences are between the Power Pro 5A setup and a Power Cab expanded with the SB5. I've got a SB5 booster(not in use just yet), Power Cab, and Cab06p, and so far I'm more than happy.
@CarmineRC
9 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Furrow I can concur with the SB5 Smart Booster! It was my first upgrade before going to a full Power Pro system. If you have a bedroom-sized layout, and run no more than 3 or 4 sound equipped trains at once, the SB5 will end up being the ONLY thing you'll need. FAR more economical too!! :)
@isaiahfurrow7414
9 жыл бұрын
Carmine Allocca Yes if you're not needing more than the cab address limitations of the SB5 supply, it's a great addition to a power cab. I could imagine adding a booster to the SB5 at some point, if I'm running enough sound and consists and off-track lighting and animations and switch motors and.... and.... but I can't imagine needing the full Power Pro system. Carmine, what did you upgrade to the Power Pro for that the SB5 couldn't provide with additional booster support? Do you have need for more than 6 cabs and 3 accessories? Any insight would be great. So far I can't imagine going beyond what the SB5 will give me, my space is limited as well as budget, and my plans are for a layout that could support only 3-4 operators TOPS at it's final stage, but likely myself and one operator will be the usual setting, or solo running.
@CarmineRC
9 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Furrow I'm RECOMMENDING the SB5! ;) Honestly, I just wanted the reserve power!! :P I run 3 cabs, and 3 multi-unit, sound-equipped trains, with an occasional 4th, doing switching.... I do have a LOT of powered turnouts, reverse loops, and powered accessories!! My original Power Cab, with the SB5 Smart Booster would've been more than adequate!! At worst, I could've added a DB5 "Dumb Booster" at the other end of my Layout (22 feet), and THAT would've handled EVERYTHING!! Naw, my ego just got sucked into the 10 amp Power Pro system... I don't regret it, it's phenomenal!!! But as I said, and for FAR less $$$$, I could've stayed with the Power Cab, with the SB5/DB5, and the Layout would've been fine! ;)

"Digitrax does not send out parts, you have to send in your throttle for repair. $35 + shipping + parts." Brenda, who is head of Customer Service as well as Repairs, "Digitrax does not sell parts." When I pointed out, "Of course you do, you are selling me a knob for $35 + shipping + the part + the inconvenience of being without my throttle while you have it. Brenda hung up. I had the good fortune of having a good LHS, that let me "play" with 4 different systems! By far, NCE was the most user friendly, so that's what I went with, and never looked back. 10 years later, I've upgraded to the NCE Power-Pro system, with my original PowerCab running a programming track. That's the *beauty* of NCE! I have upgraded to an impressive, STILL user friendly, powerful DCC system, and I was able to REUSE every piece of the original $149.95 PowerCab!!!

3:54 Why is it programmed to not make any noise ? You mean not even idle ?! NCE , all locos immediately are idling just by turning the main power on ! We can turn it off on each loco, but why, unless the 'shop' wants them cold. 5:17 That's why speed wheel should be vertical like NCE has. Did you mean the left knob can be assigned to be throttle for lefties? 12:43 Ah ! Now THERE'S a controller !! 13:05 On tethered NCE control you do not have to push the Emergency stop button. It all comes on immediately with main power. The wireless needs the red button hit I believe in order to search for its radio channel. 23:14 Ah, Now THERE'S a satellite (my name) throttle ! 24:47 There's no readout of headlight on/off because it's assumed you're down at your engine and can, duh, SEE if light is on or off ! Thanks Bruce. It's obvious NCE is the winner. Glad I bought the PowerCab and satellite some , what, 7-8 years ago. No layout any longer due to having to relocate 2 times last two years and now $ is tight. But I think I'll be able to build a 10' x 10' shelf, switching ops soon. Can't wait to fire up the NCE Cabs again ! I have 3 small Bach steam: 'Modernized' 4-4-0, 4-6-0, Mogul and an RS3..all run A1. I'll have to reorient myself to the old CVs. But it'll all come back... All these years and DCC is still so non user friendly. I vastly prefer the approach Rail Pro takes.

Failure of DCC is with the engineers; like Direct Current it could be simple, act like real trains, and be fun.

sounds complicated. with this system you have to take a college education just to run a toy train.

You should distinguish between toy trains and model railroads. From your comment, you have no experience or understanding of DCC for model railroads. You should stick with toy trains and DC throttles. Either way, all that is required is that you can read the instruction manual and follow the steps.

I have been out of model railroading for a few years now ...and I have to say that this seems like a very obsolete way of doing this I could do the same thing with a mini computer arduino, beaglebox , raspberry pi and my smart phone look it up on youtube

Since you've been out of model railroading for a few yrs, we can say that your knowledge of what's obsolete is a bit flawed. You spout about technology encompassed in Arduino...smart phone etc with no notion how you would get these devices to control a model railroad. Why would you want to use a "smart phone" to do this? Nobody else would. If you have an Arduino-based control system, let's hear about it. Name dropping by itself doesnt make it.

Ange Purs I use my smartphone to run DCC locos all the time. All it takes is a old XP PC ($50), JMRI (free), and a Digitrax PR3 ($79). Why would I want to spend $200 on a throttle that on a scale of 1 to 10 is a -5 on user friendlyness? The DT400 seires throttles are the biggest pieces of crap ever perpetrated on the model railroading community. I can hand a never-ever user a smartphone with WiThrottle or Engine Driver apps running, give them a 1 minute overview of the throttle and they can control a train in 3 minutes and never ask me again how to do something. I cannot seem to do that with a DT402x

DCC is really lame; way too complicated, doesn't act like a real train, and is no fun.
