Wild ostriches are used to being with large herbivores, so he should be happy with the bigs. I like Carl!💕 Common ostriches eat seeds, plants, grass, fruit, flowers, occasionally insects and small reptiles. They need access to small pebbles and grit to digest food in their gizzard. They can go without water for several days, but enjoy taking liquid baths. Maybe put a small pool out there for Carl to play and bathe in!

They have my ❤️ but then again so does Mr. Huck, Pig Trudy, Pig Newton, Lola, Lenny, Rose, Sophia, Blanche, Brady, Laverne, Tiny Tim, Ringo, Ernest, Grannie Annie and the list goes on. I have to put in my $0.10 and I'm glad we're all talking about this as a group. Carl is not a domestic animal. I don't care what anyone says he is a wild animal. It's like raising a lion and saying it's a domestic animals because you raised him from little and you put them with other animals doesn't make him domestic it still makes him a wild animal. An animal is an animal as an animal and you don't know how they're going to react. One thing I do know is that those Talons only take one kick and you're dead. So I would not underestimate Carl and I definitely would not have any child near him. When you go into his pen... don't be Mister Macho Man and say that nothing bad is ever going to happen but you're going to have to have eyes behind your head and walk in his pen with a giant heavy-duty shepherd's hook like your friend because the shepherd hooks are not just used to catch an animal but it is also to protect you from the same animal you're trying to herd. And you know some of the littles have attitudes like mr. Ringo I would hate to see anything happen to him and some of the pigs as well can also have attitude every animal has their day and some days they have good days some days they have bad days so you just going to have to play it by ear and see what happens... But whatever you do don't underestimate that bird because those Claws and those feet can kill a lion!

Hey Lester - I’ve left a comment on your previous video with some facts about ostriches. The first thing I’ve noticed in this video is that Carlito looks thirsty. Ostriches enjoy water and often take baths where water sources are available. They are good swimmers too according to a website I’ve found on google. Please place a water-through for Carlito in the area where he is pacing back and forth and try to spray him with water like you’re spraying Annie & Ernie and see if he likes it. Also, the common ostrich (Struthio camelus) has a lengthy breeding season that stretches from March or April to September… so you will need to do more research before putting him with the littles. You know Ringo is unpredictable and for sure you don’t want anyone to get hurt. We can all google the internet to find more information about ostriches but your best bet is to ask Carlito’s previous owner for more advice and perhaps bring him over to give you more ideas or more options fir this beautiful bird. I’m sure we all have good intentions and that’s the only reason you’re receiving so many comments on your post.

Lester, y ou know geese have to have water to clean out their nostrils. I would think ostriches do as well. Witch chickens, you have to show them the water and push their beak in the water so they know. Maybe you can take a 5 gal bucket out to the fence row and hope Carl knows to drink from it. Fill it to the top! And leave it.

Lester I don’t care if he makes a rut up to his knees by walking the fence, don’t make the change too early. The goats and pigs are too aggressive and Carl may not take it too kind. I don’t disagree with you on much but I think Carl needs time to get more accustomed with all the littles. I worry about the babies getting hurt or worse. I feel you are rushing to move Carl give him another week. If he wants in their pasture that fence will not he hinder him. We had a neighbor who had Emus when they wanted out they could not be contained or caught. That was funny watching them chase, them down the road. They couldn’t catch them, but they could be herded. They feed on grasses, shrubbery, berries, seeds, succulents and also insects and small reptiles. They will eat sand and pebbles to help grind up their food inside their gizzard. Ostriches can rely on the vegetation they eat for water for a short time, but for long-term survival they do need water sources. Common ostriches can go without drinking for several days, using metabolic water and moisture in ingested plants!

Ostriches are omnivores, and thus eat mostly plant material, though at times they may also feed on insects and small vertebrates. Although they prefer plants-particularly roots, seeds, and leaves-they also eat locusts, lizards, snakes, and rodents. They have even been known to eat sand and pebbles, which helps them grind up their food inside their gizzard, a small pouch where food is crushed and ripped up before it reaches the stomach. Ostriches don't need to drink water; they get all the water they need from the plants they eat. However, they will drink if they come across a watering hole. They are flightless birds. Ostriches have been domesticated for only about 150 years, and are truly only partly domesticated, or, rather, are only domesticated for a short period of their lives. During their five-month breeding season, these flightless birds form flocks of five to 50 individuals, often intermingling with grazing mammals such as zebras and antelopes. They are known to eat rodents..... maybe a solution to the mouse problem??? and snakes. Good luck with Carl.

Do ostriches need a sandpit? Do they like to bury their head on the sand ? Hope it all how well for Carl and all of you 🤞🏻❤️ Also they are masters of scaping as they are nomads birds and like to roam around so he might be behaving now but giving opportunity he will try to escape 🤭 A closely spaced woven wire fence (2-inch by 4-inch) at least 5 feet high will contain the birds. An electrified wire installed on the top inside of this type of fence will prevent ostriches and emus from jumping over.

Hi Lester Nice rescue , seeming you don’t know much about carl I would suggest you get on some ostrich documentaries and just observe how these birds are in the wild and you will get to know some of Carls behaviours , it shows you what he is like 👍

You can put a water tub out and move it few inches closer to the shed each day until he gets used to it.

I think you're overestimating Carl's cognitive abilities, Lester. And underestimating the damage he's capable of. Please don't put him with the littles. Not just for their safety, but i can see one swift ram from Ringo into Carl's legs snapping them. We're not trying to criticize you, we're all just worried and love you and your babies so much!

I don’t know much about ostriches but I do know they are kept with pigs, goats, deer, camels, etc at this drive through safari in Upstate NY, in the Adirondacks. They are definitely a bit ballsy, but seem to run okay with the other animals. Hope it all works out ❤️

I would suggest a secondary pen/pin or pasture area for himself and possibly a lady friend in the future. I recall them being aggressive with smaller animals. They are kind of loners

Carl is awesome to watch!!! I'm wondering what would happen if Carl took a goat hit to his legs? That's my first thought/concern. Other than that, he does look like he's super interested in the littles. Wonder how Annie and Ernie will react to the big man on campus 🙂

I do believe Lester would have gotten information from the previous owner, given the fellow raised Carl and contacted Lester so Carl would have a safe and loving home. The man cared enough to do that which is way more than alot of people that raise or have animals, so he will have mentioned habits and other important things to try to ensure the best possible transition. I also have no doubt Jami is doing research on her new feathered baby, and if not rushed it will all fall into place eventually as always. I do agree Lester needs to slow down, not be so anxious, and watch/learn Carl a tad longer for a smoother and happier transition for everyone's sake (*Lester, please know I understand your excitement and desire to see Carl fit where he will be happiest, I would feel the same and mean no harm in any of what I am saying). The size of Carl's brain doesn't need to come into it, that has been said of many animals for so long, and really that is just our ego thinking we know it all and we do not, it was probably men that came up with that excuse due to insecurity anyhow (just a joke kinda, sorry - lol). I gather it also helps people feel better about treating them like mere objects, to be eaten, tortured/destroyed for fur, ancient health and beauty products, greed fueled desires like the need for ivory, and because people forget we all need each other, including the animals to make the world go around (humans have done a pretty big number on our planet regardless of knowledge of the same, and greed really ... shrugs. Animals, birds, even fish have turned out to be swifter than most humans on a decent day, and there is alot to be said about wild instinct in any animal (even us), but it doesn't mean the worst will happen. Humans are the arrogant and silly ones making broad assumptions on animals (everyone in general used to think animals couldn't feel or think anything, simply ran on pure wild instinct way back, are some people stuck in a time warp?), and they need to take a look at what we have learned about the actual intelligence of animals, nature vs. nuture is a huge factor ... have to remember love always wins and Lester and Jami, well the entire family actually, have that in abundance and there is love in everything they do. There are many examples here in You Tube land showing/proving animals are not all wild and thoughtless, all you have to do is look and see others that also run sanctuaries, many of them are for wildlife like bears, lions, alligators, almost everything thankfully. If you are smart, do your research, spend time paying attention to habits and routines, and stay aware, things can go very well regardless of the ups and downs that come with anything. All of this panic is harmful and can deter understanding or providing a home to an animal in need, so I hope people stop and do homework on these things as it can be trying enough to find good willing and loving homes. Slipping uncertainty and fear into people's minds is the opposite of being prepared and positive, which the animals need as they sense things so much better than we ever could hope to imagine. I have faith in Lester and Jami to do right by their babies, and I do not understand everyone's panic as with momentum it can even affect someone else that could be in a similar position, and the fear can affect any animals placement and well-being which is very unfair. The animals (including domestic) will always do better, feel happier and safer, if their person(s) are at ease (but always be aware), happy, and confident in what they are doing. They will figure it out and in time, we will all forget what it was like without Carl there. Much peace, love and respect to all ☺🙏❤✌🍁
