People who work in the most dangerous profession in the world will rather choose traditional looks over safety? This sounds insane. I guess they still want to stay alive and healthy? In Europe, firefighters are iconic because of what they do (saving lives), not because of what their helmets or their fire engines look like. Besides, firefighters in most European countries have been using "jet style" helmets for so long, that they have already became "iconic" here. The same will happen also in US.

Couldn't the safety and comfort features of the European helmet be incorporated into an American style helmet? The brim on the American style firefighter's helmet is designed to deflect and keep burning embers from getting on the face, down the neck, under the turnout coat and firefighter's bunker gear. Just like the American Soldier when we changed over from the old steel pot style helmet to tthe new Kevlar style helmet, there were issues with the change. The steel pot was much lighter in weight and could be used as a water bucket when the helmet liner was removed. You could bale out a flooded foxhole or conduct personal hygiene in the field with it. The Kevlar helmet offers better ballistic protection from high velocity munitions, but looked similar to the German WW II helmet.
@grassytramtracks

The protection of the sides of the head do that job far better than American style ones. When people's safety is at stake, tradition should go straight out the window. Firefighters in the UK used to have yellow helmets with brims, somewhat similar to American helmets, but have used this European style for a while because it's better in every way
