This is a new video style for me. I have seen other videos on KZitem of dead malls and decided to make my own variation of one. After editing it together I recorded a narration for the video. Hopefully you enjoy it. Either way, let me know what you think in the comments. Should I (if possible) try to make more videos like this? And, is there anything I should do differently if I can make more? This was definitely a bit of an experimental video.
INFORMATION ABOUT VALLCO SHOPPING MALL:
Opened as Vallco Fashion Park on September 1, 1976, Vallco was, at the time, the largest mall in Silicon Valley. To compete with other such malls that opened shortly after, Vallco had a major expansion (adding the now vacant first level) in 1988.
In the 1990s Vallco began experiencing a decline in occupancy as the stores located within it no longer well represented the economic status of local residents. This decline continued into the 2000s with the mall having a 24% occupancy rate in 2006.
The mid 2000s brought an attempt to revitalize the mall, with renovations starting in 2005, the addition of an AMC movie theater in early 2007, and by 2009 there were two new parking garages, a bowling alley, and a food court. In 2007 Vallco was renamed Cupertino Square, and in 2009 it was changed once again to Vallco Shopping Mall.
However, multiple ownership changes, and a bankruptcy filing in 2008 halted any further plans, and once again threw the mall into a downward spiral.
In January 2016 Macy's and J.C. Penney announced plans to close their Vallco stores, and Sears soon after announced an October closing of theirs. By the start of 2016 all three anchor tenants had closed their stores, with many of the already few remaining smaller retailers leaving as well. It is supposed that San Hill, the current property owner, notified all remaining stores that their leases (up at an undisclosed point in 2016) will be terminated without the option for renewal. Some stores have been (and others may be as well) moved to another Sand Hill property nearby, also within Cupertino. The mall currently sits at about a 9% occupancy level, continuously declining.
In 2015 Sand Hill Property Co., who recently took over majority ownership (and soon after took complete ownership) of the mall, announced plans to demolish all buildings on the property and create "The Hills at Vallco", a mixed use property containing retail, residential, and office space. Two measures on the 2016 November ballot for residents in the city of Cupertino will determine whether or not these plans can be acted upon.
