The Sunrise Mall actually fully opened on August 30, 1973. In 1971 a couple of the anchor stores were the first to open. The original anchor line-up was: Macy’s, Gertz, E.J. Korvette, J.C. Penny and a two-story 75,000 sq. Ft. Woolworths. Other stores included: Lane Bryant, Franklin Simon, Lambert Brothers, Zum Zum, Orange Julius, Dime Savings Bank, Brentano’s (in Nov 1973), Zales, Stovers Candies, Friendly Ice Cream, Bonds Clothes, Naturalizer, The Shirtshop, Kaufman Carpet, Kay Jewelers, CB Perkins Tobacco, Hodor Dinettes, Buster Brown, Holiday Spas, Jean Nicole Apparel, Nathan’s Famous, Happenings In Gifts, Red Cross Shoes, Scholl Foot Comfort, Wurlitzer Warehouse, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour Restaurants, General Nutrition Centers, Danneman Fabrics, Harvest House Cafeteria, Rite Aid, Lobel’s Clothing, Animal’s & Things (puppy mill), Sunrise Cameras LTD, Vincent’s Jewelers, and others. Muss-Tankoos Consultants we’re the mall consultants (and/or developer depending on what account you read) and it was developed and operated by Sunrise Associates. In 1974 Woolworth two full newspaper pages of coupons only good at their Sunrise Mall location - possibly not a good sign that they were meeting projections. Reportedly the mall cost 45 million to build in early 1970’s money. A search will bring you more than you ever want to know about Gertz but it was a longtime Long Island/New York City iconic department store main-stay. I passed this mall once in the mid-70’s and it was mega-packed. I have some images and the grand-opening ad if you are interested - post an email if you like.

Went to this mall my whole life (I’m 26 now). My dad and I would get food at the Sbarro’s buffet after he would take me to GameStop. My mom bought me so many games there including the Mario Party games on GameCube. I remember going and picking out Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness as a Christmas gift for me that year in 2005. In middle school, my mom and I would go to Sears and JC Penny to get new clothes. I bought Nike’s at Finish Line. The Spencer’s you walked past on the 2nd floor used to be a RadioShack. I had a friend in high school who worked at the Wetzel Pretzel right next to it in the food court. On Friday nights in high school, my friends and I would head to the mall and I remember how we would always comment about how much more expensive Taco Bell was at the mall. But we kept buying it 😂. We would hit Spencer’s, Zumiez, Hot Topic, Pac Sun and probably a couple of other places and then go skate the curbs outside in the mall parking lot. I bought so many shoes at Shoe Encore on the 2nd floor. Funny how it was right next to a Payless. The store at 17:58 with the amazing carpet was Noodle Kidoodle which later turned into Zany Brainy. As a very young child, my dad would take me there all the time and let me walk around the store and pick out whatever I wanted. I even remember the day when my dad and I came to the mall to go there only to find out the gate was down and the store was gone. Behind the orange wall at 17:04 was once a McDonalds and a pet store named The Pet Company. I got my childhood dog there in October 2003. A beautiful white Bichon. Toby was his name. Across the hall was a GameStop (1 of 2) and a Ruby Tuesday. My mom and I would go do grocery shopping together every weekend at that Walmart during elementary school and middle school. When it announced it was closing back in 2015, I knew the mall’s years were numbered. I’m surprised it even stayed open this long. I love this mall and always will. R.I.P. Life was so simple then, even in the 2000’s and we didn’t even know it.

I love malls. There's that feeling of so much going on. It's like an adventure. I like that distinctive indoor sound that all malls share. I think people still like and would prefer shopping in brick-and-mortar stores, but the businesses can't compete with the cost and convenience of shopping online. I'd really like to see a company, or group of companies, work to create a new mall experience with large variety and low cost in mind. Being a child of the 80s, I miss the monthly family excursion to our mall for clothes, food, housewares, tools, etc. We're supposedly more connected with social media, but it's just not true. People need to get out, be near each other, and interact.

Sad to see how things turned out here. Sunrise was not my closest mall, but I recall going there a few times in the late 70s and 80s. This video made me do a Goggle search to check out how the other malls are doing in Nassau County. Looks like Green Acres and Roosevelt Field are still doing ok. Malls were the place to be back then as a teenager. Sam Goody and the arcades were my hangouts. Good memories. Thanks for documenting this.

But bad elements came too - lots of shop lifting , parking lot thefts , great anchor stores closing & Amazon put the nail in Sunrise coffin. I’ll bet condos go up after te mall is razed. It was only a matter of time before this mall received the Ace's Adventures treatment. Great job on this video! This was a well-done sendoff, and those sweeping skylight to floor shots are superb! This was my childhood mall, and was always a treat to visit during a day off from school. Through the late 2000's, Sunrise had a far more attractive interior than it does now at the end. Those square outlined patterned tiles on the first level used to have nice trees in them. Even the spaces under the stairwells all had plants and mulch in them. It did not always look like a giant dentist office. That center court near the elevator used to be a beautiful fountain filled with fish and plants. I probably threw $10 worth of pennies in there over the years. It became a drab Starbucks, then a Dunkin later on. Interestingly enough, Sunrise never had a food court until Westfield took it over in the mid-2000s. That empty food court space actually used to be the 2nd floor of Woolworth's back in the day, then later an electronics store called The Wiz. While it is unfortunate to see this mall finally yield to the changing retail landscape, it's interesting to consider where all those people went. Everyone who used to spend a Saturday afternoon shopping there, or working full time in the mall; they didn't disappear, they are just somewhere else now.

Perhaps we are becoming (slightly) less consumption oriented as a species? I'm 52 and remember the mall heyday. Only a couple stores actually sold things that people needed. In addition to Roosevelt Field, the Walt Whitman and Smith Haven malls are doing well. All three are Simon properties, and of all the companies that own and operate malls Simon is arguably the best. The Source Mall is now called Samanea New York and the new owners are trying to redevelop it, with more of a focus on entertainment and dining rather than traditional retail. Which makes sense, as being in close proximity to Roosevelt Field retail is maybe not the best idea. Ikea keeps Broadway Mall going. Without it, the mall would be struggling if not dead.

My bad, I stand corrected, the zoo location was here 1000 Sunrise Highway, Massapequa NY 11758 All my life I thought it was the mall, lol. Not sure if it was a part of the property. The Monkey Zoo: This was actually Frank Buck's Animal Kingdom, opened in 1934 by the world famous hunter best known for the phrase "Bring Em Back Alive." Buck had opened a larger zoo in Chicago for its 1934 World's Fair and felt he could succeed with a similar venture in the Massapequa area. There were enough roads to attract residents from surrounding towns and the Long Island Railroad was an easy commute. The zoo proved to be very successful throughout the 30s and 40s with lions, elephants, hyenas, reptiles and monkeys. There was also a restaurant and an exhibit hall. To many visitors, the Monkey House was the best attraction, because they could watch dozens of monkeys jump around and play for hours at a time. On several occasions, monkeys escaped and had to be rounded up by zoo employees or by local residents. Buck lost interest in the venture after the war and died in 1950. The Grimaldi family bought the zoo and redesigned it as a place with small animals and rides, attracting the many new homeowners to the area. The zoo remained open until 1965, when the owners succumbed to the appeal of rising land values and sold it to developers. It is today the site of Phillips at Sunrise Shopping Center. The only building still standing is the lion house, where the and are located. The entire zoo stretched from that building east to and back to where is located today. Keep asking for information about Massapequa's history and I'll be glad to answer your questions. The first set were excellent and should lead to many others.

Great job, Ace. I'll toot the horn for a visit to Colorado Springs' two failing malls, Chapel Hills and The Citadel. The Citadel is much more aesthetically pleasing, and has an original anchor 1972 JCPenny with a fantastic brutalist facade. Probably the best functioning food court fountain too. Chapel Hills is more of a Simon-bland mall, but has some good points and is doing worse than The Citadel. From what I remember the store was located in close proximity (like around a corner) to the mall's food court. Does anyone know what mall that might have been? Or even more broadly can anyone think of dead malls with original Disney stores that have been covered by Ace / Dan Bell and other great dead mall content creators on here? I'm racking my brain and cannot remember which mall I"m thinking of.

Please tell me that the other Sunrise Msll that you will be visiting will be the one in Citrus Heights California? I work there as a teen from 1995 to 1999 at the McDonald’s that used to be in the mall. I sure do miss the old days and it would be nice to see the old mall again. 😊

Mall failed because the shit looks hidden away like an asylum. Can’t see it from sunrise highway. The lights take forever to change. The left turn to get to the parking lot is somewhat confusing.

i spent so much of my childhood in that mall, the food court especially lol that one storefront with the blue doors and the stairs with the entryway iirc was an Abercrombie and Fitch, or Hollister maybe lol, been almost a decade since i was there last though

I don’t understand. Every time I went there, it was full of people. I guess the N71, S33 and S29 now have no purpose so that’s another excuse for not so nice bus to cut a route 😑. The mall will just lay abandoned? Or someone bought the property to build something that only the rich can afford?? You will be missed , sunrise mall 😢
