You are in for a treat when you finally get to see the first sequence, Hearse Driver sequence, nicely distilled and chilling.

definitely. For me the first story is actually the creepiest. I think we've all thought we've woken from a dream cos thinfs look as the should but soon realise we're still in it. One of my favourite films & also a big Amicus fan

A MUST-SEE for horror film buffs! "Dead of Night" 1945 with Sir Michael Redgrave and Mervyn Johns. So hard to find but a must-see treasure!

I was blown away by it. After catching it on TV (missing the first 5 minutes) and uploading this video I bought myself a copy. Watching it in its entirety it's EVEN BETTER, and is actually a completely different viewing experience to the one I had when I caught it on telly.

The dummy is like a naughty child, the ventriloquist can't live with it, and can't live without it. He wants to give it away to someone else, but at other times clings to it. Either that or the dummy is possessed by supernatural forces.

Love 'Dead Of Night' greatest horror anthology film ever made. I certainly recommend getting the restored Blu-Ray. The DVD is rather poor. The original negative was lost in a fire years ago & the the sound is dreadful. The Blu-Ray does a great job bringing it back to life.

*spoiler alert* Have you watched the first 15 mins yet? It's crucial for the impact of the ending. This is such an important movie, not only to the horror genre directly influencing things like the Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt that were to follow. But also in terms of the narrative loop concept that would be repeated in all sorts of other genres: Groundhogs Day, Live Die Repeat, among many others. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of an earlier film that executed this narrative loop structure as fully formed as Dead of Night (1945).

Speaking of "losing your personality to the dummy", you must check out a Canadian movie from 1988 called 'Pin'. You will love it! If 'ventriloquist horror' is a genre, then Pin is the best of that genre.

There was an NBC show with Kate Mulgrew called Kate Loves a Mystery where they did a VERY creepy "controlling dummy" episode. It was called "A Riddle for Puppets" and starred Jay Johnson from the show Soap. Man that one scared the beejeesus out of me. @@GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse

1945 the end of ww2 such an unlikely kind of a film to be made then, AND by Ealing studios I think a COMEDY specialising studio normally. BUT here it is, the very 1st anthology...horror type film, made, and in the U.K a true classic, dated for the diamond crystal accents yes, & in black & white, but NEVER for it's- originality, quality or for it's production design and calibre of acting. also ending on a...circle of life type symbolism completely unpredictable. there are no real duds among the well written short story's , and they've inspired so many feature length films to over the years, especially the Hugo one.

Thanks Again. Your Byron looks so friendly and healthy. My ex girlfriend's father used to have two great dalmatians that would knock you over and lick you to death every time I came to the house! They are really affectionate! I love terriers so Lily must be beautiful. My girlfriend has a great streak of naming dogs and she gives them weird/special names! She used to have a coker spaniel named Yoko (for Yoko Ono) and we just lost our rotwiller Bruce to a blood parasite :( (for Bruce Wayne, Batman) . Breeze is only 5 months old and growing :)

DEAD OF NIGHT is kind of...a daytime Haunted house , host story that we HAVE seen before, except later ii.e - house dripped blood and feature length countless other' horror films. I still think the best lead in story is the VAULT OF HORROR one, here the basement room is an extra character, and differant for being the ONLY Amicus film NOT to have a human host (once again they were trapped in a basement, NOT a lift ultimately). It was also clever i thought to use the room to finally open & introduce the graveyard at the end a very differant view from the one when they first entered. IN NO WAY predictable for anyone watching for the 1st time.

With films like Dead Of Night and Flesh For Fantasy it's easy to see where Rod Serling got his ideas for Twilight Zone stories. In fact Serling blatantly ripped off two of the segments in this film-the ghostly hearse driver and the haunted ventriloquist dummy-for the Twilight Zone. I can also see where Amicus got inspired for their film plots.

THIS is the very FIRST horror anthology the granddad of all these types of films from 1945 but as is often the case largly unknown in todays "state of the art" world which is a terrible shame i feel. AMICUS themselves, admit their ideas (in the horror genra) came from this unique film both for format & inspiration. I like the entire film (despite the ridiculous upper class accents & sense of Empire) but among the set pieces I'd say I liked the room in the mirror, and Hugo the dummy segments best. What would be your choices, Grompy Amdrew?

Anthology movies are a tough nut to crack because for every 1 or 2 good stories there's always going to be that 1 really, really crappy one. Which ruins the whole experience except for The Uncanny only because it has a bunch of kitties in it.
