I love how it contrasts the so-called Romantics and the Realists. I used to show this to HS seniors and I challenged them to debate with me. They could choose Keating as a brilliant teacher or a charlatan. I took the opposite view and I won every debate - that's how even-handed the story is. The fact is, one of his students - the one he was closest to and had the greatest impact on - took his own life. Did Keating encourage Neil to defy his father? However, Keating is without doubt an engaging communicator and teacher.

Mine actually did. My english teacher takes a LOT of inspiration from Keating. He even read “To the virgins, make much of time” to us.

Yes that was my favorite part too! I loved the dead poets reunion at the end (excluding Cameron ofc) where they all went back to the cave and read poetry together and lived happily ever after ☺

Okay, something I noticed. Mr. Keating called on Todd who was too anxious to answer, then calls on Neil who glances to his left at Mr. Keating walking over from Todd's desk. When Mr. Keating says "to woo women," Neil GLANCES AT TODD AND LAUGHS.

DPS is one of my favourite movies but I've only ever watched it all the way through once because I don't need that kinda despair in my life again.

that's valid. I just watch until the play scene and pretend that they all live happily ever after.

Any boy's prep-school novel, back to Tom Brown's Schooldays, through P.G. Wodehouse and American boys' books of the early 20th century (or Forrest Reid's Uranian 'The Garden God', or E.F. Benson's 'David Blaize', both written for adult audiences)-any of them will have at least a homoromantic subtext. You can't put dozens or hundreds of adolescent boys into a closed society and expect nothing to happen. I thing that DPS succeeded in implying the boys' sexuality (metaphorically presenting it as a passion for the theatre in Neil's case) without being _about_ that.
