Players have a choice to start the game from a fresh file at level 1 and attempt to carry Frank from the beginning all the way to the end using the knowledge they've gathered. New Game Plus exists for people that are playing the game for the first time and want the option to start over with beefed up stats to attempt to finish the story instead of only goofing off. It's a good option to have that I think serves different scenarios and types of players; same case with letting people continue to explore the mall and grind even after failing an integral story mission. That kind of encouragement is more likely to prompt them to not only complete the game but try again later under level 1. Or hell maybe people just want to go through the game again at max level and breeze through stuff, as a reward for all the extrinsic and intrinsic experience they gained. I think that overall the option of new game plus adds way more than restricting levels to specific runs. I could agree that it would be neat if there was a mode that shuffled all the items, hostages, and psychopaths around, on top of a harder difficulty, but I anyone can argue that more content for a good game is good. I don't think the game is missing a whole lot for it's current approach.

Very good and intelligent points, any flaws you pointed out were all logical and well said, and I'm glad that we still love this game despite the very true statements you made about the gameplay.

Awesome video! I really liked this game. I have a ton of nostalgia for it, especially that opening mall section with all that royalty free music....beautiful.

Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I have some nostalgia for Dead Rising too, especially the song that plays when you fight the convicts in the courtyard.

@@Erumore super true. I think the atmosphere too was just different than most games. A mall is so distinct and enclosed, it was very realistic but also somehow wacky as hell. I think it's also nostalgic cause going to the mall as a kid was like a special occasion for me, and in this game you could explore the whole thing for yourself. As a kid I would draw my own game maps like for my own Mario bros game or Arkham game...I slso drew my own dead rising mall lol.

Your commentary is really insightful and concise. I really liked what you had to say about DR1 and 2. I never thought of playing the first game. I only ever played the 2nd one because it was so fun playing with friends (I mean practically everything is better with friends). I realized that the main game is pretty boring playing by myself. Disregarding my personal experience, I'm happy to see small hobbyist game reviewers here and there in KZitem such as yourself; especially when one is articulate and plain to understand.

Halfway through and this video does feel like a bit of a sequel/sidequel to the unsighted critique. I like the "western developer btw" gag Edit: aight, done, cool video.

I went out of my way to avoid repeating my thoughts from the Unsighted video, but it's undeniable that the two games have a lot in common. Still, I thought there was enough interesting stuff in Dead Rising that it deserved a video. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I understand the critique about the difficulty, but I do like the system where you carry over stats on a new game. It turns "a playthrough" from one 72-hour run into the whole experience. Bringing both stats and knowledge into a new run means there are multiple axes of progression. It's a game system that I find really compelling, it's almost a Majora's Mask-style timeloop game. This is a tangent, but I've always thought that Lightning Returns: FFXIII was trying to do this same thing - it has the same NG+ system and even unlocks some mechanics on your second run - but unlike Dead Rising, it's too long and too easy to encourage or force a replay. In any case, I do like the idea of making the permanent upgrades more difficult to get - in fact, most of the tweaks you suggest sound like a good idea. Dead Rising is a prime example of a first game in a series with excellent ideas, but could just use some refinement in the execution, and I would have liked to see what would have happened if DR2 wasn't "handed off to a western developer btw" to become something quite different.

Maybe there's potential in the idea, but as it currently stands in Dead Rising I think carrying your level into a new game is a bit too much. As you said, you can also carry knowledge into a new game, which alone should be more than enough to give you the edge over a fresh playthrough; carrying over the level as well is overkill in my opinion. If you find that kind of timeloop compelling, then I'd highly recommend Outer Wilds if you haven't already played it. I have a video about it on my channel, but don't watch it unless you've played the game because you really don't want to see any spoilers!
