Finally, an intelligent gardener who shows detailed video of deadheading and explains the placement of each cut. This is the 5th video on the topic I've seen on deadheading, and the only one that explains things. I'm done! Thank you. Oh, I don't know why, but when I listen to this without looking at the video, I see Robin Williams.

Thanks for showing this...i will be more careful with the campanulas!

Thank you for such a fantastic video! If you are deadheading a flower, is it okay to toss the flower head back into the garden soil? Or will the seeds from the deadheaded flower trigger the plant to stop producing flowers?

I can't remember the name of plant we have, but the leaves produce delicate white flowers along a thin stalk, and wilt once late summer arrives. I think it's a form of clethra. How would you deadhead something like that?

The clethra is a shrub/tree. We don't usually deadhead shrubs or trees.

What about biennials like sweet williams and verbascum? Will they flower again if deadheaded or do you throw the whole plant away when it's finished flowering?
@GardeningatDouentza
5 жыл бұрын
Hello there, Jennifer, and thank you for your comment. No, biennials will not reflower if deadheaded. If the foliage still has value, as with many verbascums, then leave them in situ. If not, and you don't want seed, just pull the whole thing out. By the way, and perhaps you already know, not all verbascums die after flowering. There are perennial ones too. Happy gardening!

Will penstemon rebloom if you deadhead?
@GardeningatDouentza
5 жыл бұрын
Hi there. With penstemons, some varieties are better at repeat flowering than others. If you remove the dead spike just below the dead flowers, there should be several more spikes ready to take over from lower leaf nodes - so maybe you'll get several smaller flower spikes. If you cut lower down, there will be fewer leaf nodes so you'll get fewer spikes which will be bigger. Hope this helps. So it's up to you.
