I've been following Joel since like 2007. What I always liked about him, except that he was a pioneer in so many different ways from other producers, is that he is so real. Yeah, ok, he is not the most friendly person on the planet, and if he does not like you, he does not like you at all. But he is always honest and straightforward, and he always talks so much sense. I remember when he would do livestreams on the 2010 era, and he would have these long conversations with us, sharing wisdom and experiences. Man, I miss those days.

Dude these take me back. I remember being like 13 yrs old listening to this dudes live streams and just taking in all the life experience and stories. It really influenced me back then in ways I even notice now. I even remember when I got a chance to chat with him on his subscription platform back in the day, I think it was called Mau5 club. Wow, blasts from the past, getting all nostalgic over here at 6am.

Yes, so true. And remember: you're only young once. You'll only be a clueless kid who can act stupid and get away with being an enthusiastic, clueless kid once. My advice: have no fear, go for it. Meet people, ask for help, ask for favors. You *will* meet some people who will want to help you. Yes, you'll be rejected too, but so what? Move on. Keep moving. And, then, be sure to pay it forward when it's your turn to be kind to the clueless kid who's interested. ☺️

I actually managed to get into a situation where I was living in a studio, and would have the entire place to myself at night. I gained the trust of the owner and offered to keep an eye on things/keep the place clean when he wasn't around. Best 5 years of my life.

He's so right on in this. I started djing in the 90's and I can relate trying to produce for almost a decade now. Even though people try to act like deadmau5 is mainstream or what ever. Probably one of the best videos a major artist has ever released online. It really shows you that becoming a successful musician is a lifetime process. And at one point he even gave up to start another career. It's very inspiring. And gives you a realistic view of a musician's journey towards his success and why it's not what we usually think it's how it is as we have been told.

His comment about being more offline is really interesting. As an electronic rock band without any major label or something like that in the back i really feel the social media boom is often not really helping for young, undiscovered bands. Its almost impossible get recognized in this huge mass of (great) artists and videos without having a big marketing budget or a lot of luck. We want to focus on our music and not spending time with a thousand tweets or stuff like that. But meeting guys like Joel in person is also ridiculously hard unfortunately.. ;)

so contradicting in a sense what he explains because how many aspiring artist are gunna take what he says and use it like a step by step guide. before I watched this I really thought I had a lot to learn but now I really believe in myself more, because you can be mediocre or innovative. with videos like this more people are gunna hoard bigger guys and there not gunna appreciate the value of someone truly trying to reach out, trying to complete themselves, not the types wanting 💰 and to be idolized. God bless you Joel.

I just had a massive flashback....I remember Cakewalk 3.0 (My first "real" DAW), trackers, Cubase VST coming out as a HUGE deal, Hammerhead, Rubberduck, etc... Damn i remember drooling over samplers at Guitar Center but not being able to afford them because they were so expensive...So, i learned to use Soundblaster sound cards, SF2's, NRPN's and spent close to $200 on i think it was a 24 or 28mb daughter board for the SB card and used that as my "sampler." Swapping 1.44mb floppies that i could only fit a few sounds on each so i had stacks of em. I couldn't afford external FX unit's so i figured out how to use the Sound Blaster cards FX as FX for the "sampler", to make music with. I remember how big The Prodigy, Chemical brothers, Crystal Method, Fat Boy Slim, etc became. Big Beat was everywhere including all over MTV.... Shit...this really took me back. Thank You for posting this. I have a new respect for Joel now.

Sometimes it helps to do some work outside of what you want your focus to be just to get your foot through the door. Right after college I worked for a year and a half as an intern at a hip-hop studio. I can count on a single hand how many sessions there were where I enjoyed any of the music, but the lessons I learned about engineering were invaluable and are things that can translate to making any other kind of music. As time went on I found out that a bunch of the people I was working with were also into EDM, and a couple were DJing on the side. So I was able to start talking to them more and more about how to do what I actually wanted to do. I'm sure even in a small town there's either at least one studio, music venue, or music store to check out. Just be the kid that hangs around all the time like Joel did, you'll eventually be able to meet the right people and get moving in the direction you want to go. It's not always the most obvious path forward. If all else fails, at least there's college right?
@BAL3

Bro I grew up in a small town in Alaska. And like you, until much later, like when I was 23 a year ago, couldn’t afford moving out of that bubble of a state. But the long time I spent pointlessly wasting time trying to network also provided me the time to really hone my sound, and make a truly valuable product. Now I realize that time I spent there wasn’t wasted. Coz if I had tried networking my early work, no one would’ve gave a shit. My early work was trash, like everyone’s early work is. So now that I’ve moved and am actually networking, I actually have a product that I’m proud of and believe is quality. Thus my networking isn’t totally fruitless. I’m slowly making real connections with it. So use your time in that small town to make your music better. And keep at it until you know for sure that you’re making quality music. Music that you are both proud of and enjoy making. THEN when you’re ready, move out of that bitch. And start networking. Best of luck my guy.
