I’m driving EAP in a ‘22 MYLR. My technique has been left hand palm down on the bottom of the wheel with index finger up against vertical spoke. I went a year and a half without a nag. I made a 100 mile trip since the update and using that technique I found that I had to grip the wheel harder thus more tiring and I disengaged twice during the trip while trying to please the nag. Over all I spent more time distracted reading the warning on the screen and fighting the wheel while watching for the warning to go away (or disengage). Great job NHTSA!

When the recall first came out, I didn’t think it was that big of a deal but overtime I have found myself using self driving less often. I’m sure there’s some variability between how the system responds to drivers of different shapes and sizes. I can tell you that yesterday I had 2 nags for me to watch the road and both times I was staring at the car in front of me when it beeped. I often get the nag to put my hand on the wheel. When my hand is already on the wheel. The system definitely needs to be improved.

A week new to tesla and FSD. As a retired engineer, I am frustated with the idiotic way tesla requires you to turn off nag, “slight turning pressure” when just slightly turning the wheel with the exact same motion with a little more pressure cancels FSD. I just took an interstate drive of 300 miles roundtrip, and about and half the time it took 2 or 3 “slight turning pressure” attempts to acknowledge the nag, but about 10% of the time, as i increased force on the second or third try, I turned off fsd 11.4 accidentally and got a demerit on our tesla insurance. It went from 97% to 88% on our saftey score! Your video was helpful, shows different ways you can acknowledge nag.

I have a 2019 MSP without interior camera. I've stopped using "Autopilot" entirely. The lane keeping (that's all it is) isn't worth the hassle. Keeping a heavy hand on the wheel is more uncomfortable than just steering with adaptive cruise control. With Autopilot I have to supervise the car and be ready to take over, which is more stressful than just being in control. Also because I'm paying attention to the road, I miss the visual prompts, so I often get an audible nag. That's right, I get punished for doing the right thing. The whole idea of giving ghost inputs in order to satisfy some overly lawyered system makes the driving experience suck. It's an inversion of how things should work -- computer subordinate to human. I don't need to be babysat by something with zero capacity for context.

I always wear sunglasses if it is not dark. FSD nag for torque on the wheel is much more frequent than pre update. While sitting and driving with normal / light hand load it may go 180 seconds between nags, but 90 is more typical. If I am eating… every 20 seconds. So it seems to watch your hands. Just rented a M3 with autopilot and the nag was less frequent with the same kind of hand load on the wheel. I didn’t eat much on that trip to test, but autopilot seem more tolerant the FSD. BTW… one of the rental M3 had the 12battery voltage too low and the car gave me about 8 seconds between first warning take control (autopilot giving up) and the car shutdown. I was not able to pull over in that time and was stopped in the center of 3 lanes on the interstate! Fortunately there was a lot of traffic so was doing about 30mph when this happened. About 2 minutes later I got it to restart by “exiting the vehicle”: remove seat belt, open door AND lift but off seat. Scary 2 minutes! Rebooting the screen did nothing.

Right now I prefer the system in our Acura better honestly. It lane keeps by a press of a button on the wheel. Doesn’t nag at all. You want lane keeping on the highway in particular when you are trying to navigate or use the vehicle’s infotainment. That’s the whole point of it. You want screens in a car, and put all user interfaces in them, be prepared for drivers to look at the screen. You don’t want that, go back to buttons, analog controls, and a radio dial. Stopping on the side of the highway to adjust things can actually be more dangerous than doing it while in motion believe it or not. Just ask police officers who make traffic stops. Which BTW, have a laptop that they typically have mounted to the center console. 😉 Last thing I’ll say, Tesla wants drivers more focused on the road ahead, then the Model 3 and Y need an instrument cluster and heads up display.

This comment refers to the autosteer feature of basic autopilot (BA). Tesla should lock out BA autosteer except on controlled access roads. The reason is that it relies strictly on having a CONTINUOUS center line. But on city streets the center line disappears at intersections. In this circumstance autosteer can change lanes abruptly causing a serious accident, This lane change can occur on 4 lane streets even if another car is overtaking. Because it is just BA, the autosteer does not look for overtaking traffic. I hope you can contact the Tesla autopilot team about this.

Great coverage of this subject. Unlike you posting a whole video, I've commented on some articles complaining about this tightening of the nag. I'm finding most complainers want to do unsafe things like eat a burger or play with Spotify. You've soft-pedaled your criticism of miscreant behavior more than I have, which may be a good strategy for you. I've found that the eye tracking is everything. Using FSD, late at night driving on the freeway, I can go for miles with my hands off the wheel as long as I'm staring at the road - even on a curvy road. Tesla may want to tighten up the feedback to encourage more tugging on the wheel even if we are staring at the road. I'm finding looking at my speed (which causes the nag to come up pretty quickly) is a necessary task since FSD seems to pick up a lot of "Truck Speed Limit 55" signs are misinterpreted as applying to me. I usually tug on the wheel, fix my speed, then tug on the wheel again.

Unfortunately the only way I can use FSD on one road during the day is use Sunglasses. I am not a fan of Sunglasses but the glare on this road if sun is out really messes with the camera monitoring. It even affects the cameras in car watching road, during early morning it disables AP cause it can’t see. No it’s not a strike situation then, as soon as I turn off the road so not heading into sun it works fine. This road has several hills and when going on uphills that’s usually when it tells you to take over. I have no idea how Tesla will fix this problem with current cars. I wish I had a newer vehicle to test to see if the new V4 with higher definition cameras have same issue.

I added a camera cover, really for cases when I’m not driving, like car camping. A little physical privacy just like window covers. Also, other than night driving, I always wear sunglasses, and sometimes a hat. My hand position, like yours, is a one handed drive position, usually on the right. Though I only use Autopilot, I use it less frequently now. I was hoping that Autopilot would receive updates and improve over time. Other than less phantom braking, I haven’t noted any improvements in Autopilot, such as lane drift whenever the size of the freeway lane widens. This keeps me from using it much on two lane freeways, because the right lane causes lane drift and the left lane is the passing lane where I can’t stay long because of speeders who want to travel way too fast for my usual speed setpoint. As a result, I’m constantly disabling Autopilot as I yield to fast movers in the the left lane. So Autopilot, becomes not very useful as I am constantly turning it off to lane change, or prevent lane drift, and back on to resume. It would seem that preventing lane drift would be a pretty easy thing to add to Autopilot for freeway driving when lanes or freeway entrances merge in from the right.

First thing I do after pulling the stalk to engage, I look at the screen to ensure the speed is correct, and the system engaged. I get the nag immediately, and it doesn’t go away when I pull the stalk again, usually have to pull the stalk two to three times. After that, I keep my hands in my lap, not touching the steering wheel until I get my nag, at which point I pull the stalk to dismiss it. I notice some times when the nag tells me to pay attention, it won't respond to driver inputs (twisting the wheel slightly, using the wheel buttons or the control stalk). I'm forced to cancel and re-engage so I don't get a strike. Anyone know a way around this?

You should try to angle the sun visor in front of the camera…I have FSD Beta and do this all the time. Still have a steering wheel nag, but can’t track my head or eyes.

I find it ironic that the Tesla safety monitoring system makes it impossible to drive using FSD with two hands on the wheel - which is the safest way to drive! To avoid the nags, one hand applying torque to the steering wheel is the only way to go

With all this nagging maybe fsd isn’t worth the subscription price?

I leave my hand at the 9pm steering wheel position like most people When the car turns itself am I supposed to somewhat let go to not impede the turning or do I still need to apply pressure/weight while the car turns itself?

80% of people texting? wtf? I mean, I see one person texting once per month, maybe. That's it.

@@DirtyTesla I belive you it's just that it's extremely uncommon in Germany. Any phone use is forbidden for years, even using a phone to call someone while holding it to your ear is forbidden. That's the only thing you see people do occasionally. But texting is a thing you see people like never do.

If I’m gonna send a text message, I’m 100% gonna send that text message. With or without autopilot. This just makes it less safe.

I get nagged so many times i've considered returning my car. This just isn't the same car that was delivered. Tesla needs to sue the NHTSA for targetting them or find a fix.

I want to like FSD I really do but I can't believe you don't get more "take corrective action" messages and crazy breaking. At least where I live in the Midwest it is painful due to the low quality/missing lane lines. Between that and the nags I canceled FSD 😢 - for the record, I think Super Cruise is much better about eye tracking but I still prefer plain old AP because it works. If they stopped including AP I would pay for it, don't tell Tesla

I have had 3 teslas a 2021 model x a 2022 tesla model y and a 2023 model x . I purchased fsd in all three vehicles (no transfer until recently ugh) with that being said I loved the 2021 model x and the 2022 model y because I never got the nag and if I did I just pushed the right button on the steering wheel. In both of those vehicles I was able to keep track of the navigation turn by turn by glancing at the screen (yes I know I can listen to the nice lady telling me what to do but knowing in advance was helpful)I also used the screen to keep my speed and to turn off the (automatic) turn signal that stayed on. No issues and the nags didn’t bother me. NOW ENTER THE 2023 MODEL X and latest update and things changed with the nag (both screen pop-up and tactile ) how am I supposed to know what the nag is for if I don’t look at the screen ? The nag comes up on the small screen and the main screen but the size is too small. I wear progressive glasses and have to move my head to see small type and that exacerbates the nag the glasses also change to sun glasses in the sun but in the car they are clear so nag is excessive! I have the yoke and now I keep one hand on the bottom and that works but the eye screening is non forgiving. My solution I do not use either FSD or autopilot and if I get another tesla I won’t buy FSD again.

I wear a hat most of the time because I'm bald. Someone should do a poll and cross reference bald people with how satisfied they are with FSD nagging. I'll bet most who are less annoyed by it just never realized it because they wear a hat by default. Also, insurance won't deny your claim for doing stupid things. It even covers you if you get in a DUI accident. You will immediately have your policy terminated afterwards, but they won't deny the claim.

In Europe a sticker over the camera is your best friend, otherwise unusable.
