This was how Dean Martin always approached the variety show. He never rehearsed with the guest performers. He would have a run-through hours before the show, then he’d go into his dressing room and relax. When it came to the live show, his lines would be on cue cards so he could remember what he’s supposed to say. And if there was an error or blooper of any kind, he would ad lib a response. That was part of the charm of the variety show, and it carried over when he did the celebrity roasts.

Foster Brooks, "The Lovable Lush" was a genius. I agree; many old-school comedians were a cut above most of the present-day ones. If you haven't already done so, you REALLY should check out Tim Conway's dentist routine. Pure comedic genius.

There's a great video of Foster when he was on the Steve Allen show and the other guests really thought he was drunk and were uneasy around him as Foster explained his job was to cut theatrical movies for television so they fit the air time. Possibly one of the best pranks done to celebrities.

There was an extra kick for those already familiar with Dean Martin. *He* was the tipsy one -- that was his whole schtick (that and the contrast with singing his songs in a completely sober mode). Then to see him in a skit with Foster Brooks, who takes the drunken persona to a whole new level, just added a lot of spice.

Dean Martin was part of the "Rat Pack" with Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Joey Bishop, and others. Often singing on stage together. Martin got his own TV show in the 60s, which was a variety show with performers and skits that lasted 9 years, and in the final season did some roasts. After the variety show was cancelled, he then did another show specifically of roasts, for another decade. Dean Martin's character on TV and stage was always a guy who drank a bit too much, but was still functional. Foster Brooks took that to the extreme. His character was always so wasted he could barely speak.

It hit different because there was a lot less 'perceived (fill in the blank)" back then. A joke is just a joke - takes a level-headed young man like you to see through all of the peripheral nastiness whelped by The Mind Virus. That's why I'm hooked on your channel. Looks like 'woke' is starting to run its course, saving _both_ society and comedy together.
